Yes, Lilly getting blotto and calling Kite on the eve of her mother's wedding was quite the shocker. I guess we can cross that off the list of things "Lilly Rush would never do/say". Her reaction when he finally answered the phone was priceless! As for the episode, I liked the costuming and the music but solving a 76 year old murder case seems a little far-fetched. Is it just me, or does the team appear to never actually work on any other cases at the time the cold job drops in their laps?

I voted excellent for this episode. I liked how the episode did show us another time. I to think it would be unlikely they would be able to solve a case from such a long time past. It was interesting how they had to use history, and interviewing present day relatives to solve the case. The encounter between Lilly, and her mother was very interesting. It seems her mother has problems with committment-being a terrible mother to her daughters-getting married for the fourth time. Her mother is also selfish-choosing to come into her daughter's lives at her own convience.-her recollection of the past-not wanting to share her past history with her current fiance. I found it quite ironic that Lilly would get drunk while meeting with her alcoholic mother, and fiance. Her mother definitely hit a soft spot with her-regarding her relationship with men(the comment about her relationship lasting more then a month with the D.A.-or something to that effect.). I to think it was Kite she called when outside the restaurant.Although drunk, she made it clear that she didn't want to be like her mother-and unlike her mother she said she was able to change. Afterall, when Kite did break it off with her-he did say that he knew how important it was for her to help people, and that she wouldn't be able to change who she was. Besides, judging by what she said, and her reaction to when the person said Hello Lilly-you knew it wasn't Ray she was calling. Ray is clearly just a good time to her-a blast from the past.

I loved this episode! The case being so old enabled the show to take another format; one where they didn't actually meet or speak to the actual people involved but only their descendants. Some of the time I was wondering where they were getting their information to give us the flashbacks but it was done quite well! The scene of Lilly and Vera in the Library was a new one which I liked. The scenes between Lilly and her mum were great. I found myself annoyed at her mothers attitude to her attack as she kind of tried to make out as if it was Lily's fault she was attacked and also when we found out she didn't even call Lilly after what happened with George. The comment made by Lilly in the office later about her mother getting married for the 4th time was great! It was ironic that Lilly was drunk while having dinner with her alcoholic mother. It was a little sad to see Lily's mother putting her down about 'being all alone' but even sadder was outside when Lilly admitting she no longer wanted to 'walk home alone'. I'm not 100% sure who Lilly called outside (and I'm sure the writers did that on purpose) but after her comments about Kite to her mum, my guess would be him rather than Ray. It was good to finally hear Lilly's comments on Kite. I would have no complaints if they bring him back - I was a big fan of the two of them!. I hope we find out (and soon)....

I absolutely loved this episode from beginning to end. Beautiful and rich story line. Interesting time setting. And Lilly …. Ahhhh, Lilly. It was nice to see her back the way I like her. Her reaction to her mom was great; and so was their interaction as a whole. I liked that the camera kept flashing to her mom touching Lilly’s hand – and Lilly pulling back at least twice, although the second time the touch lingered on for a little longer. I loved the scene when Lilly steps outside the bar and calls Kite. I had to rewind a couple of times though to make sure she said “Kite. Lilly Rush,” not “Hi. Lilly Rush.” But then when she mentioned that she knew the ship between them had sailed and that she was sure he’d be at work, I was certain that she called Kite. The scene was touching, emotional, and funny. Kathryn did a great job acting intoxicated. It was subtle, yet obvious. It did not feel out of character for Lilly at all. Her reaction to Kite answering the phone was very cute. Great camera work there as well. Vera had some funny moments in this ep as well (like he usually does). I laughed when he flashed his badge in the library to the girl who told him to “sssshhhh” it. Like I mentioned during the chat yesterday, I first thought he was giving her the finger, but then I saw the badge. I also liked his line when they were interviewing the thesis guy whose grandfather was the dresser for the singer (??). Vera said something like, “so he was putting her dresses on <pause, blink, blink> her.” It was cute. I loved the moments with Jeffries and Lena. Very sweet. I really loved the closing montage and that almost everybody got some sort of closure by seeing one of the deceased. It was absolutely beautiful and emotional. <big sigh>

she's unraveling. :smile88: I couldn't believe Kite picked up. (Kite) was on the Sunday Night Movie last night too! So---if Kite picked up. Is there gonna be something more? Interesting. I had a hard time following the case so will have to watch it again. I'm not sure I liked the case as much as I have the past 4. I just got finished watching this episode (the late start got me all messed up, so I saved it to now) and all I have to say is: OMG!!!! LILLY DRUNK DIALED KITE!!!!!!! More episode reaction tomorrow.

Well you would think they would have to address the issue sometime, after all Lilly does in theory [though not in view] still work with him. They gotta take this somewhere, surely. I am a little confused however cos didn't the spoiler info we had say she was gonna call Ray and ask to meet him for breakfast or something?? Perhaps cos of the unhappiness at the whole Ray story line the writers changed things round at the last minute because of the potential that Josh Hopkins could return to the show?? Gah, now I would love that!! And not necessarily for the purpose of him and Lilly hooking up again. Just to see him :smile11:

sonny - I have since gone back and read the spoilers and I noticed where it was supposed to have been Ray. I'm thinking that the negative reaction squashed that idea. I'm so glad because calling Kite is so much more of a shock! I loved it! I said that this episode was good. I'm trying not to let the brilliant drunk dialing scene cloud my judgment, and if I'm being honest, the case sort of fell apart at the end, which keeps it from being excellent IMO. I'm going to copy and paste my thoughts from my blog (sorry, but you'll get to read them first!) on the actual case and everything non-Lilly related. My Lilly thoughts will be original, though I was a bit concerned about how they were going to do a 77 year old case, but the brilliant minds behind CC were way ahead of me. Instead of relying on witness accounts, the story of Violet's murder was told through journals, writings from the time and stories past down through family members. It was all very clever, really. It was also very engaging. Even though I tend to find the older cases fascinating history lessons, I don't tend to get as emotionally invested as I do the cases from the 80s on, but this season has been a different story. This show has done a nice job of taking the older cases and still incorporating the history, but also making them extremely relevant at the same time. It's an impressive feat and last night's delving into the high society of the 1920s on the verge of the stock market collapse was no exception. In fact, I was highly vested in Violet and her journey through Nick Bartleby's twisted web until the very end. I liked that the clock they showed us early on held tremendous significance and unlocked the mystery of who killed her, but the actual killer wasn't very believable for me. I also felt like the pacing was a bit off. The case was moving along slow and steady and revealing clues piece by piece until the very end when it seemed like they ran out of time, so they simply threw the resolution together. Maybe Lilly's side story with her mother (much more on that later) proved to be too demanding on the episode, leaving the case a little hurried. I don't know. The rest of the story was so well done that the somewhat thrown together ending wasn't a deal breaker for me. I actually really enjoyed this episode. I loved seeing Lena again, and I LOVED the big smile on Will's face when he spent time her. Her insight was wonderful, and I'd love to see Will start dating her. Kat and Vera crack me up. They get the best one-liners! A special thanks to boxman for that link about "300 Flowers." I was very curious as to where the song came from. It was beautiful and absolutely perfect for this episode. I loved the closing montage with everyone getting their much needed closure. Now, onward to Lilly. I've watched the scene a bunch because I screen capped it for my blog, and she definitely says Kite. What made this scene so great and so in character was the way that Lilly finally lost control. We are so used to seeing her in control at all times. Whether she's in a relationship, tearfully facing down George, or making a suspect think he/she has the upper hand, Lilly is always perfectly in control. But last night, that all fell apart just as we all knew it had to sometime. If you know a control freak (and I use the term lovingly because I am definitely a degree of one), you know that they can't keep it together forever. Lilly was fueled by the realization that her mother, who has led a less than stellar life, is still able to find the happiness that alludes Lilly. No matter how hard she works, no matter how many cases she solves, at the end of the day, she is still all alone. I don't think that Lilly NEEDS someone, but she does WANT someone, it seems. Of course, her mother's comments didn't help with the situation and the alcohol seemed to take away her better judgment, and thus, we have the resulting message to Kite. What struck me as extremely interesting in this scene was the way she so desperately wanted to change. I don't think Lilly fully understands what happened between her and Kite. It wasn't just about her picking Mark (i.e. her job) over him that night on the street. It was about the fact that she was much more emotionally available with Mark (a stranger) than Kite, who was supposedly her boyfriend at the time. Even though she presumably slept with Kite, she was much more intimate with Mark. She shared details of her life that she wasn't sharing with Kite. It goes back to the idea that Lilly opens up with suspects and victims families (strangers), but not those closest to her like her family, co-workers and boyfriends because there's no risk in opening up to strangers. If she opens up to someone close, they might judge her or reject her and then she'd end up hurt. I think it's easier for her to get rejected by someone like Kite over her job than another reason. In other words, it's not just that she's a workaholic, it's the reasons behind it. She hides behind her job because it's safe, and she's suddenly starting to realize that this is preventing her from being happy. The message she left for Kite was really meant for herself. This scene had to be one of the most poignant, emotional and shocking scenes of the series thus far. Kathryn Morris played it to perfection. She never let Lilly slip out of character even for a second. I loved the way she took the phone and held her head to it for a moment to collect her thoughts. She was brilliant and equally so in the scene that led up to this one. Director Kevin Bray ("Mind Hunter") really captured the chaotic, emotional sense of the scene. I LOVED the jump cuts with the editing, particularly once Kite picked up and Lilly hung up the phone. There were about three quick jump cut shots that really paced the beat that Lilly's heart must have been skipping at that moment. A+++++ In fact the entire Lilly/Mom storyline gets a HUGE A+++ from me. I loved how Lilly showed up at her mom's wedding in the end. She finally seemed content about the fact that her mother is truly happy.

I've been waiting for your review all day TVFan and it didn't disappoint. Haven't seen the ep yet [ :smile88: which is killing me!], but when I do I'll be sure to add my 2 pence worth! ;D ;D
I so agree with your thoughts on why Lilly finds it easier to open up to strangers rather than the people close to her and only time will tell whether she is able or really commited to changing. And if she does change how that will affect her work??

I agree with Naj. I thought the scenes with Lilly and her mom were great. I am glad they are developing the personal relationship of her character. I am hoping Kite comes back in the picture-I liked the interaction between him and Lilly. As far as the episode goes I once again thought a bit too much time was spent on the victim and surrounding characters, although I do have to admit it was pretty ingenious the way the writers developed the story line for such an old case.

I totally agree with this, TVFan. It was a great scene especially the time lapse cuts. It was played perfectly and something we all can relate to. sometimes calling someone or writing someone when we are just really speaking to ourself. I like the idea that Kite did pick up. I was totally suprised and hope to see some kind of follow up with the two. As far as Mark, I would assume the storyline would have already been filmed despite the audience reaction to MC Man. So I'm guessing this was all decided upon? Unless they did some quick editing somewhere. A good question for InsideR. I wasn't as engaged in the storyline even tho Liz Garcia wrote it. It was too confusing for me but then I'm easily confused. I do like the Lilly/mom dynamic and at least Lilly went back and realized her mom has changed and has found someone good for her life. ~Naj

The spoilers about the scene being with Ray were from back in February when the sides came out (sections of the script given to agents for casting), so presumably, that information was back when they were still casting the episode (before filming). Ray's appearance in Dog Day Afternoons (last weekend in Feb) was after the release of the sides information. I'm guessing the scene was rewritten after the negative reaction and before the filming.
