Something still bugs me about Ellen Rush. At the beginning of the episode she acts very caring but then at the resturant mentions of Lilly's jaw break when she was ten, while acting like it was all Lilly's fault.
Was this to impress Jackie that Ellen was indeed a good mother and Lilly was a wild child, but the thing that sent Lilly over the edge was the quote" At least I'm not alone". What kind of mother would mention her that and say that , and expect her daughter to still come to her wedding? I think not, Ellen needs to realize just how much she hurt Lilly emotionally as a child.

Saw a lot of insecurity in Ellen Rush's behavior, LII2. Don't want to excuse her behavior though. Maybe she wanted to impress Jack a bit, show her better sides, but as well I think she sort of wanted to reassure herself, that she wasn't just a bad mother. Yeah, this sentence was hard, but that's Ellen Rush's way to look at life, nothing that makes her trully happy, but she might think, that this is the important thing in life: No matter what, try to be not alone, lot of people think like that.
Though having a partner is no guarantee for not feeling alone. Deep down in her heart Ellen might feel that it's not about that, but she wouldn't admit it. Not even to herself. It would question most of her life now.
I'm pretty sure, Ellen would like to have a better relation with her daughters. She knows, a lot of things went wrong, but at the same time, she feels, like she couldn't have done something about it. How should she have changed some things? She feels somewhat guilty but sees herself as victim of circumstances, I think. It needs a lot of courage to admit mistakes, to admit you messed up your life and the life of your children. Ellen notices that Lilly bears a grudge against her, that she must have hurt her deeply, but she might not be able to really understand Lilly's feelings. It's never easy to understand other people's feelings and it's more weird, if you think you know that person good, or you should, like a mother should know her child (not agreeing with the latter, but that's how it is seen, isn't it?)
And well, Ellen Rush is a proud person - as is Lilly.

I didn't really like the case, I guess because you didn't have any REAL witnesses, except for one older lady. It got really confusing with all of the different grandsons, and cousins, etc. that they interviewed. But of course, like everyone else, I loved the personal drama with Lilly, she is nothing like her mom. But I also thought it was sweet when she ended up going to her wedding. Has anyone noticed that when she wore her hair up at work, she wore it down to go "out", and NOW she wears it down to work, and up every where else! lol, but I also LOVED the phonecall too. I don't care what happens with Kite really, I guess just as long as Lilly is happy, anything will be fine! ;D

Okay, so there's been a few questions while I've been reading over this thread and I'll try to answer some... Or I'll just make stuff up I think Lil was probably talkiing on a V3 razr. They've been huge sellers for Motorola and are just being phased out with the V3x which has a 2 MP camera and is videochat enabled (no, I'm not a phone geek lol. I used to work in a phone shop and now I have a pink V3x that I love!!). Meanwhile, I really wanted Lil to phone Ray. *ducks as things are thrown*. I know! But he'd kind of her touchstone... Her link back to everything. From what I've managed to pick up through my sporadic season 1/2 viewing, he got her away from her mother in the first place. And he knows her history, and probably came from the same type of neighbourhood, so all she might have to say to him is 'It's my Mother.' and he'd understand, whereas Kite seems more from a stable-type background. Hmm... What else was there? Someone said something about the 49 from when Lilly was ten. I'm assuming her mother filed it, but as the reason for Lilly being outside at that time, she probably said that Lil had run away from home and was apt to do that so she wouldn't have to take the blame. Over time, Ellen has probably convinced herself that she was a good mother and that Lilly did, in fact bring on the attack herself. Also, about the liquor laws. We're talking 15-25 years ago that this would have taken place. Would the laws have been as stringent back then? In Australia in the 50s, it wasn't uncommon for children to be in bars, or buying alcohol for family members who couldn't be bothered getting it themselves. It was kind of a different world back then.

Ok... So the ep aired last night on Australian tv. ANd I loved it *sigh*. But I do have a question... When Lilly is meeting her mother for dinner, and her mother asks her if she's seeing anyone or something like that and Lilly says; Ray rode in a few weeks ago Jacky says uh oh after Ellen looks not-so-happy and then what does ellen say? I couldn't catch it!

Thanks longislanditalian2! I rewound the tape and watched it a few times and couldn't hear what she was saying. Wonder why Ellen's not a fan of Ray... Hmm. Thanks again!

@jambled- I think the reason why Ellen is not a fan of Ray, is mainly because he doesn't seem to be a guy that wants to settle down. She doesn't want Lilly to live an unhappy life like she did.

I'm looking forward to this re-run ... this was my first official S3 episode that I was able to watch, but I missed the opening scene with Lilly and Mom (and also wasn't thinking I needed to record episodes as I thought, "Oh, I'll buy the DVDs." Not.) The funny thing I remember as I was watching this episode was that I had, at the time, only seen one other ep - "Churchgoing People" (over on TNT). Yet, I kept thinking throughout the hour, "I think this is a key episode ... the whole mom thing ... I think that's got to be important, right? And the not wanting to be alone thing?" LOL! Yes, very important. Glad to get to see this again.

So, I finally got to see this ep from start to finish ... and I just simply love this episode. It has everything that I have come to enjoy with this show - a case set back in history; interesting and compelling minor characters to make up the victim, prime suspect, alternate suspect, etc. (Polly, Spyczyk, Carmella, Nick); lots of Lilly; little personal tidbits sprinkled throughout the episode; and major Lilly revelation(s). I'm starting to find I'm enjoying Liz Garcia's scripts almost as much as Veena Sud's (with Liz and Andrea Newman also having penned "Joseph"). Neither are afraid to get into Lilly's personal demons and/or backstory (which I like to see), and I so enjoy watching Kathryn get to delve into the complexities of those demons. The opening sequence between her and Meredith Baxter ... Lilly vs. Mom #1 ... just brilliant. So much conveyed with one change of expression, one move of the hand, and ONE LINE, "I thought you'd call." (mom didn't even both to call and check up on Lilly after George? Ouch.) The longing in Lilly for just one ounce of normal affection from her mom, but no ... it's just about getting Lilly to wedding #4 ... and so the hand pulls back ... Lilly closes down once again ... just brilliant. Credit again to Kathryn's subtleties. I know I sound like a broken record, but they make those scenes what they are. She takes the words and direction and delivers these poignant moments - over and over again - that say SO much without hardly saying anything at all. I just so enjoy watching her make Lilly all that she is. Lilly v. Mom # 2 ... this has been talked about so much, so ... suffice it to say it is an equally wonderful exchange - painful, but wonderful. Rich, layered and sets the table for a changed Lilly. Favorite episode for me of Season 3.

"I thought you'd call." (mom didn't even both to call and check up on Lilly after George? Ouch.) The longing in Lilly for just one ounce of normal affection from her mom, Any normal mother would have called or came over after the what had happened, but not her. Give you sometime- yeah almost a year later, that's such a bad excuse . And it's a little too late, Lilly already thinks you are a bad mom. Ellen is extremly self-centered and every seems to revolve around her. I don't think she personally took into consideration that George almost killed her own Daughter. Maybe if you were there to support Lilly Emotionally as a child and as an adult, she would have not objected to go your wedding. The Lilly Drunk Scene- I think Lilly puts it into her head that she's going to be like Ellen, when she's nowhere near that. If anything Christina is going in that direction. Lilly has to realize that this is now her life and that she is a much more stronger person then her mother will ever been.

Can anyone tell me what Lilly is saying during the call to Kite: "I know you're {inadudible}. That's NOT why I called."
I can't make out what she said there. Anyone?

I think you're talking about when she says, "I know that ship has sailed" refering to her relationship with him. Does that sound right, Michelle?
