Well, I thought that this was an all-around fabulous episode. I knew Rose was in the truck with Billie though because in the preview it shows Rose & billie in the truck & Rose is saying "He's gonna kill us" so I knew there was a man chasing them too. Plus, they showed Vera interrogating Curtis in the previews. Don't get me wrong, though, I still love it. I think it is mt favorite Season 2 ep aside from Mindhunters ;D

I just watched this episode and it was pretty darn good. I found the casefile really interesting and kind of brave--it just breaks canon in so many ways. I mean, not only are we talking about a female-female pairing back in the day when girls couldn't even wear pants, but cross-dressing (kind of), bootlegging, and an interracial romance. The poems were a really good tie-in and I was totally convinced we were in the 30s by the flashbacks. Billie Holiday was a nice choice, too.
My only complaint is that the older versions of Curtis and Billie's "girlfriend" didn't really look like they were in their 90s. 70s maybe, but not 90s, which threw me off a little. But those are just details. Rose, on the other hand, was perfect--she looked just the way my great-grandmother did in her late 80s. Makes you wonder what other skeletons our innocent grandmas have hidden in their closets.
Very, very interesting episode. Enjoyed it even more than I expected.

Hi Disasterfreak, I thought the older version of Rose was just right. I guess I really wasn't thinking exact age there. And Billie was fabulous in this episode. Her whole personality was fascinating and reminds me of others I've known in R/L. The young Rose was a perfect match to get the idea across that same sex relationships don't always folow a certain kind of looking female. I loved the closing montage and underscore. I'm thinking this ep could be rerun as it ran on Mother's Day. But will htey?

This ep really got to me. I even taped it and then accidently taped over 3/4 of it. I'd really love to have this one taped. Such a good episode all around.

WOW! Holy cow, what a great episode! Totally an unexpected surprise for me, I never thought I could get into such an old murder. Coupla notes: Its interesting that Rose and Curtis's dad committed suicide after the bank closed his store. This could possibly reference the financial problems a lot of people had after the 1929 stock market crash. Along with Rose's eventual husband, a Wall Street guy, this is a nice tie-in with season one's "Greed" episode. The flashbacks seemed to use a form of colorization that Turner uses a lot on his networks... The pastel colours seen in the flashbacks are often used in still-life pictures in hand-coloring, an old photographic art. (For fun, try doing an image search for 'hand coloring'.) I'm quite sure it wasn't just my eyes, but it seemed as if some of the modern-day scenes were given this effect too. Specifically, I'm thinking about the scene where they're reading Billy's poetry at the Philly PD headquarters, Jeffries' birthday scene, and some of the 'box room' scenes too... in fact pastel colors seemed to be used througout.. I'm kinda surprised how much I loved how the poetry was used; Billie and her poetry made me think of my favorite Philly singer, Jill Scott. This is the first episode I've seen where they used so much incidental music. A lot of it seems written specifically for the flashbacks and some passages noticably used a lot of violins. I really liked it a lot! For me, it added an immeasurable amount of emotional impact to the scenes. I hope there's a segment on the DVD (that million$$ of fan$$ are waiting for....) where the show's composer talks about writing this piece for the episode. I'm sure he has a lot to say about it. Billie Ducette...a convenient namesake of Billie Holiday. Could Billie Holiday actually have been singing in a Philadelphia speakeasy in 1932? Hmmm.... Billie Holiday was born in Philadelphia and spent many years between Baltimore, Philly, and NYC. A few years ago, I actually lived one block away from a home she lived in while in town. But probably more interesting is that her drug use goes along with the prohibition theme--And most significant of all, is how Holiday's open bisexuality fits perfectly with this episode. Lena, the woman Jeffries is being set up to meet...a namesake of the singer Lena Horne?? For those who were wondering why the Jeffries sidestory.... My god, that reference to Lena is an incredible finishing touch to the episode, since Lena Horne and her husband Lennie Hayton was one of entertainment industry's earliest interracial couple, and they each received 'enormous pressure' in their day. And Piper Laurie, shame on you! You should be thankful I watched this episode alone...you made me cry!

Splendid episode.
Those three words I'd never heard together, before you Made them in your mouth Chewed them soft like sugar cane Polished them with your tongue Gave them to me sweet And I swore I'd never get them lost Is it how I can't find sleep? I get fed this thing you said Is it how my heart grows at the sight of you? Then baby yes, I love you too.
Beautiful.
