Yea, Ryebeach, maybe Lilly doesn't feel so bad now about not talking to Christina. Rose's brother didn't even report what had happened. What kind of person is like that? Is he that hateful of her for liking another woman? That's awful. It is totally unacceptable behavior on the brother's part. I guess it was a sign of the times but still...

dsrttaylor - I'm not sure if you'll be able to find the poems because they were most likely original work written for the episode. If someone else has any ideas, please post them. They were very good, though, so kudos to whomever wrote them.
This was a very strong episode IMO. I thought everything gelled so perfectly. It was nice to have Mark Pellington back as director. He did not disappoint. I bet that's why this episode was as strong (director wise) as the Pilot for you Naj, since Mark Pellington also directed that one. Some of the transitions between the current scenes and flashbacks were gorgeous! I noticed this especially when the detectives were sitting around reading the poems and the flashbacks were showing us what had happened to inspire the poem. There was no black and white, but the flashbacks were not in true regular color (at least they didn't appear to be). The colors looked muted, and almost like a painting. It was a really nice effect, and I thought it conveyed the mood better than black and white would have for this episode. The way they used the rain, darkeness, sunlight, etc for the different scenes was just amazing.
I thought that the script was just as strong as the amazing directing, so my hat goes off to Liz Garcia (although I assumed the episode would be good because she wrote the beautiful "Sleepover" earlier this season). I really had very little information about this ep before it aired, so every twist was a surprise for me. I had no idea what happened until the characters told us. I LOVED how Rose's poetry spelled out what happened, and Lilly had to sort it out phrase by phrase.
My assumption as to why the brother never reported the truck going off the bridge was because he felt that he somewhat caused it to happen since he pursued them in his car. He might have thought that he would have gotten in trouble. Also, he might have felt that it would have been embarrising to have (what he thought was) his sister and Billie found together. His sense of pride and anger over his sister caused him to keep quiet. People never cease to amaze me.
Cold Case has dealt with gay/lesbian/bisexual issues before, but I really felt that this episode captured the actual relationship between Rose and Billie more than the others that have focused on the issue. Just as Lilly said to Rose at the end, it was the wrong time for them. Rose continued on with her life, but she lived the rest of it a lie. She was true to herself when she was with Billie, but the times were not right back then. It was so tragic when the truck went off the bridge and only Rose survived. Not only did she lose the person she loved, but she was forced to deal with the fact that she had been driving and made the decision to drive off the bridge so they could be together forever.
This episode was very emotional and extrememly well done. Kudos to every single person who worked on this episode. It was truly amazing.

When Lilly said, "70 year sibling squabble. You got me beat," her eyes flickered towards Scotty's direction; Scotty also had a funny expression on his face.

I really liked this episode! I'm a sucker for cases pre-60s. I'm not sure why, but it's just fascinating the way they portray that time period.

I was struck with a very profound but realistic thought last night at the conclusion of this episode.
This show aired on Mothers's Day and I wondered how many married women were out there in the audience who were living a life that wasn't their first choice--being married to a man because they couldn't deal with non-acceptance within society or family of their true desires. And I wondered if this was aired with some forethought to this actual date.
edited to non-acceptance

Good point, Naj. I actually wouldn't be surprised if it had. I've been getting the feeling, these past few weeks, that the writers are actually dangling a lot of little details in our faces to see if we pick up on them. They seem to plan things a lot more carefully than I had thought at first. Or maybe I'm overestimating them, I'm not sure.
For example (this has nothing to do with Best Friends, sorry) have you noticed the child that comes out in the credits? She REALLY looks like KM. I think she's supposed to be Lilly as a little girl. And one of these shots has a date scrawled on top of it... what if it were the 49 report we've been speculating about??? Ok, I'm probably just being paranoid. But if it were, it would mean these writers have things really planned out...

I liked Lilly's comment right before the opening credits: Vera: 70 years dead. Scotty: Nice and Cold for ya. Lilly: Could be our new record. She sounded like one of us

Sorry about that. Must be another forum I was ranting about that on. There's a child that comes out in the credits--a little girl. She looks a lot like KM. In one of these clippings, there's a date projected on top, something that says Jan '76. Now, I had always figured that little girl was just one of their cases, and the date, too. But I suddenly realized the little girl looks TOO much like KM (Lilly). And the date projected: 1976, would fit with the age of the child. Could it be the file of the "bad thing that happened to little Lilly"--the 49 report? That would mean the writers have been planning Lilly's 49 report since the first time the show aired, and have been showing it to us every ep--flaunting it in our faces during the credits. I know it's a long shot, and seeing it spelled out like that in this post is almost embarrassingly paranoid . But if it were true... I'd have to give the writers credit for planning it out so carefully.

I don't even think I've ever looked at the credits because they split the screen and show other promos for different shows. Does anyone have more info on this? I'd love to see what you are seeing there, Disasterfreak. The other part, for me, is that this is the only crime show I watch. So it would be easy for me to miss messages or clues they are sending if they are. Quite interesting. ~Naj

Janna made some screencaps of this in Source Number 1, but I don't feel entitled to just copy & paste them without permission. I'll ask her if she can post them, ok? But maybe I should create a different thread for it, I'm kinda disrupting the traffic here.

I really liked the episode! I thought it was sooo emotional but in a good way and I was really surprised at the end when it turned out that no one had actually killed her... I was also quite surprised when it turned out to be the other (African American) girl who had died and not the sister.
