. . . . . . . . . . . I'll comment more tomorrow. So this was postpartum psychosis and not depression. What the mother feared most she created? I'd say that this was a classic Cold Case episode (meaning more from the orgins of the early shows). It took a bit to get down to it and i thought it was the son from the get go but I had to figure it was the mother else the story wouldn't work. I will say I thought the episode was Excellent. I have no idea how the show of this caliber will work in the 9 pm time slot as I still feel it's an 8 pm show. For me this will go down as a top ep for the season. More later.... g night. Nice work from director David Barrett & writer Liz Garcia.

HDTV channel had a lot of problems. I hope the recorded version is better quality when I rewatch it but I missed a great deal of dialogue that was important. I'm not going to talk about specifics but I really liked this episode. A few song guesses came true this time around and the suspects were interesting. And I was mislead and provided with a great twist near the end, despite not hearing the dialogue. More at the chat.

I saw a lot of similarties btwn this and the episode Glued with the snow,( the footprints in the snow) I must say that Kathryn did an excellent job with this episode.
Although I didn't care for the scene with Ray, which seemed that they knew each other when she was 10. I have a feeling at the end of the episode she really still loves Joseph since he was lying there alone. Was Lilly really upset or sees Ray as a close friend or lover?
It was one the classic episodes that made me feel like I was watching an episode from S1 or S2.
Was Lilly's mother abusive to her and Christina, if she didn't leave them a lot??
the ending really made me cry, I liked how Lilly kneeled down at Iris's grave and how the snow started to fall, maybe it's a sign of a re-birth or a change?

When I started crying at the beginning of this episode I knew it would be an excellent show. I too thought it would be the son, but I have to admit that the way Iris was killed really shocked me.
I have to admit too, that at first I was bothered by the overtones of blues used in the flashbacks, but when the mother mentioned that Iris was born during a snow storm, suddenly I understood why the flashbacks were done in blue. Well there seems to be two reasons. One: Snow is actually "clear" and reflects the colors around an area. So most of the time snow will appear in shades of blue, purple, and occassionally orange.
The second reason? Blue is the color of hope and depression. An irony that Iris would be born during a snowstorm as a "hope", but then killed during a snowstorm because of her mom's "depression" aka Pyschosis.
One thing I noticed, is that they never showed Iris as a spirit. (You know how at the end of every episode the victim appears, smiles, waves, and then dissappears.) I can only accredit this to the idea that Iris being a baby a true innocent would have forgiven her mom, and thus didn't need "closure"
My other idea, is that the baby that the son was holding was supposed to represent Iris.
I give this episode an A
Edit: As soon as I first posted this message the song "First Snow" by Drudkh came on my playlist.

What an excellent show !! I give it thumbs up!! Lots of twist and turns, I thought for sure it was the son, but then it wasn't. How sad to see the mother and child laying in the snow and then a fawn shows up. I'm sure there is some symbolism in there. Just seeing that fawn remind me of a classic story that I read in school and there was a movie of it. Dammit I can't remember the title What a shocker to see Ray in the hospital Lilly giving us more facts about her life with the mother and Ray at the hospital. Wow! I can't wait to have chat on this tomorrow!! Just remembered the classic!! "The Yearling" woohoo my brain is not dead ;D "The Yearling"

Is it possible that Lilly sees Ray as a close best friend , after he told her that memory of him making her a milkshake after that incident, but what was the milkshake representing at the end and Lilly wasn't there. Maybe Lilly is happier with Joseph who know? I hope he doesn't ask her to marry her, I acutally got that feeling but was glad that she wasn't by his side.
My question is did Lilly loose a baby, she seemed to be extremly sad at the end??

Hmm, *click* wait...
There's a definate seasonal thing here. It's snowing, indicating that it's winter. Winter = "death", but then we have the fawn which is a symbol of spring, and spring = "rebirth"

I gave this one an excellent as well. The case was very strong, and very tragic. Every flashback had a somber tone, highlighted by the blue hues. It was a powerful story that really captivated me. CC always does a nice job shedding light on important issues. All of the signs were there for Molly, but no one knew what to look for. As Kathryn mentioned in the PSA, her form of PPD is rare, so I imagine very little was known about it in 1982. And the poor son went through life believing that he was responsible. He couldn't even hold his own baby because he was afraid of what he was capable of doing to her. Just a tragic case all around. Lilly. I feel very torn for Lilly and she isn't even completely in this thing. I used to think that she and Joseph should be together, but I'm just not sure who is right for her. She and Ray have such history. We found out tonight that they grew up together. He was the one who nursed to her back after her horrible attack. I have a soft spot for childhood sweethearts, so hearing that story and seeing all of the emotion in both Lilly and Ray's eyes had me thinking that these two may be the right people for each other if they could overcome their lifestyle differences. I felt something deeper than the hook-up stuff last season when Ray told her that he just wanted her there with him. It was honest and it had a lot of feeling behind it. Lilly was so racked with guilt because she refused to help him when he asked, and it all came through in her meeting at the hospital. On the other hand, Joseph is kind, understanding, patient and crazy about her (maybe a little too much for her liking). I just don't know who she's better off with, but I'm liking the story. It's allowing us to see Lilly differently and it's lending more depth to the show. I'm so impressed with the way Veena and co. have been able to seamlessly weave Lil's personal stuff into the episodes this season. Amazing work! Kathryn had a tour-de-force episode. She was nothing short of brilliant in so many scenes, particularly the hospital scene and the interrogation scene at the end with Molly. That interrogation was so flawless that I was convinced I was watching a S1 episode. One of the series' best ever. I know the "Did Lilly lose a baby" question has been brought up time and time again, but I've never fully been on board. Tonight's final scene has me leaning in the "Yes" column for now. Lilly seemed a little more somber than usual as she sat at the baby's grave. Maybe it was just the case, but I felt a stronger vibe there than I have ever felt before. If she did lose a baby, then this show has been alluding to it for four seasons. That's some awesome continuity! As always, I have a few caps over at Pass the Remote to tied you over.

Maybe Lilly's just mixed up on who she really loves, she can't decide but her unhappiness is eating her inside.

Man, what an episode. What a tear jerker. I cried when they played "Open Arms" by JOURNEY at the end. That's one of my FAVOURITE songs and the song and scene really fit each other.
For a while, I thought the Father was trying to put the blame on Devon. I thought he was guilty.
I think Lilly's reaction at the end was just empathy for this beautiful little baby who didn't get a chance to live her life. I don't think it was a hint to her having lost a baby in the past.

Kinda off-topic, but did anyone else catch that "Journey Diamond Jewelry" commercial?? I'm sure it was on nationally. It came in at about 43:00 minutes, after the "theymissyou.com" commercial for Rozerem. It featured the song "What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life", that is most known as sung by Frank Sinatra (and also sung by Rosemary Clooney and Barbara Streisand). Holy cow, it makes the hair on the back of my head stand! The commercial just "fit" so excellently with the themes in this episode--it was stunning for me to watch the short 0:30 seconds it was on... (Click on "Dandelions" at the link above.) Does anyone know who is singing this version of the song? One person seems to think it's Dusty Springfield. Sure sounds like her, though I've never heard it before. I'm hoping that it's not a special recording that some Madison Avenue ad agency created specially for this commercial... Anyway, if Cold Case ever has a "dream sequence", I highly think it would probably look like this commercial.... ETA: Here's a youtube.com link:

Good episode, but Kat is getting too much of air time, air time that should be Lilly's or one of the others. I feel Kat's presence is taking away from the show. She's dead weight for me.

Lilly seemed a little more somber than usual as she sat at the baby's grave. I've always contended Lilly had a baby but my thread was discounted. Again this ep had all the components of why I was drawn to the show in the first place. The ending visit from Lilly to the mother was one of KM's best performances and has been sorely missed from this series. Great job. As far as Lil and Ray I agree knowing that these two were there for each other in life does change things considerably. At least it does for me. This episode is an absolute gem and I'm glad to finally see them bring back what set this series apart from all the other shows out there.

Why is it the only scene with both Lilly and Scotty together was at the end, I miss them during interrogations together. By the way where is Kathryn's emmy , she really was excellent in this one?
