I think this episode title "Maternal Instincts" gives us a clue about Lilly's past. That talk Lilly had with Sean about providing for his child and her emotional outburst to the effect that Lilly 'wanted everything too and was too proud to ask for help--she waited too long' makes me wonder if Lilly couldn't provided and lost a child.
I don't think anyone on the board caught that when this ep first aired. We just kept wondering why all the emotion from Lilly.
Any thoughts?

Wow that's a good point. That quote is one of my favorites fromt he first season, but it never occured to me to think of it that way. Now that i do, it is definitely possible that she meant it that way. Add that to the 'questions we would LOVE to ask Lilly' list

You raise an intersting point Naj. But I don't think Lilly lost a child. I think her outburst had less to do about a baby and more to do about Sean's tough on the outside demeanor yet hurting on the inside. He didn't want anyone to see how hurt he was about having his mother die in front of him and how he's had to live in the foster-care system since then. Lilly though could see right through him and could see the scared young man underneath and I think she acted the same way when dealing with her family. We don't have much of Lilly's backstory but we know there are some major issues with her mother and I think Lilly as a child always remained strong and acted as though she was fine when in fact she was having a hard time dealing with life and growing up.
Well, that's just what I got out of the scene.

yeah, that's a good point but I still think Lilly felt connected to Sean because somehow they shared similar life experiences.
but, who knows... we know so little about Lilly's previous life that anything is possible.

Yeah. I agree totally. I dont think that Lilly losing a baby was the reason for her, uh, outburst, but it could be a *possible* explaination.

Due to the complete stupidity of my local CBS affiliate, I was unable to re-watch Maternal Insticts Sat night. I don't remember the scene well enough to comment, but I know I didn't notice this the first time around. I guess I'll have to wait until the DVDs to comment further.

I re-watched the scene a couple of times and I agree with you, trubluCCfan. While any explanation is, of course, possible, I think that Lilly started getting upset when she asked Sean what he was going to do if his daughter came home with a purple foot. We know that Lilly had a rough upbringing. We learned in "Fly Away" that her mom was on welfare and Lilly and Chris often did not have much to eat. I thought that when she talked about being too proud to ask for help was when she was much younger and needed the help that Sean needed now. But I may be completely wrong...

TruBlu - That's too funny! My CBS station chose to air a local NFL game instead of CBS programming. They were supposed to air the CBS programming in the middle of the night, so I TiVoed a few hours. They aired everything except CC. I hate this station anyway, but now they're really on my list!

If anyone has the dialog of that scene with Sean, could you please post it? It still gave me the impression that Lilly had a kid and couldn't provide or because she couldn't provide and had a baby had to give it up.... My mind is going wild with thoughts of 'what could be' Lilly's past! ~Naj

If anyone has the dialog of that scene with Sean, could you please post it? Here you go Naj: Sean: "My lawyer says I could get 2 years." Lilly: "I heard." Sean: "So I'm just supposed to sit in this joint for 2 years." Lilly: "You stole a car and you were drunk. Sean: "3 Beers." Lilly: Drunk driving leads to homicide. Homicide leads to jail for the rest of your life." Sean: "So I get it, you're as full of it as everyone else." Lilly: "Sean, what is it that you want?" Sean: "Right now, I want out of here." Lilly: "Say you're out. The foster homes too. Then what?" Sean: "I'm gonna hit the road and never look back." Lilly: "Taking anyone with you? A girl." Sean: "Nah, I'm gonna meet my woman." Lilly: "Someone who doesn't know you. Make a fresh start." Sean: "Yeah, and me and her are gonna settle down, kick back and make alot of love." Lilly: "Be careful." Sean: "I want kids. I'm gonna have 13 of them." Lilly: "What are you going to do for work?" Sean: "Whatever. I don't know." Lilly: "13 mouths to feed and you don't know?" Sean: "So not 13, maybe just one. A girl." Lilly: "So what happens when your little girl comes home with a purple foot?" Sean: "Why would she have a purple foot." Lilly: "Because it's wintertime, you got no job. Your wife's got another guy and your daughter's got holes in her shoes." Sean: "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah." Lilly: "No, what are you gonna do? What are you gonna do?" Sean: "So your saying I got no right to want anything in this life." Lilly: "No, you can have it all but you're gonna need help." Sean: "How do you know what I need?" Lilly: "Because I wanted everything too. But I was too damn proud to ask for help for way too long. Good luck okay?" Sean: "I did want to meet my family." End Of Scene.

So after reading the words from that scene, I really don't think Lilly had a child. I think her outburst to sean had to deal with her childhood and her own stubborness, thinking she could handle anything and everything when in fact she could not.

Thanks for the post Ryebeach. See I'm not sure how to take it. I can see it your way but I could still see it that she had a child and couldn't provide.

I think she was talking about herself in this scene too. I can't imagine that Lilly would have a baby then give it up BUT if you watch 'Family' Lilly does has an odd reaction to Quinn when they meet and are talking about how Quinn abandoned Claire. It's so hard to judge what has happened in Lilly's past. She gives us these little expressions and reactions at certain times and it makes us all think, 'has this happened to you?' It does seem to me that there are some child issues and whether they are issues to do with when she was a child or with a child that she almost or did have I can't be sure of yet. There are indicators for both thoughts and maybe the return of Lilly's motorcycle man might offer some insight into what actually happened in Lilly's past.

I agree Ruda. I think if Lilly was with child she had a miscarriage or something. I can't see her as having had an abortion or put her child up for adoption. But saying it when people are desperate they do choose those options, so who knows? ? :smile80:

I have an idea she never really had a child. She probably wants one though. But I honestly don't believe she was ever pregnant. That would make her also too much like Sam o WaT, and I don't think JB would allow it. Besides... it's not really Lilly.
