The " victims" appeared twice in this episode. But were seen together in the end in front of Kat.Don't think they appeared twice, only Kat sees them in the end. The mother and granddad see lookalikes. Though had to rewatch the scenes to be more sure about that (and am still not 100% sure, lol, interesting how our brains can betray us) But it's a nice idea, because we expect the 2 to see their lost ones, don't we? Instead seeing the features of Madison and Skill in others - like telling, could have been them. Could be taken as well, that neither the mother nor the granddad are finding peace even now that they know all what happened. Kat is the one, finding peace, having solved the cases.
But I'm starting at the end of the story, lol.
Not sure if I'm rating this as a good one or an excellent one. Basic idea, most of the story, directing, cinematography and most of the acting were very good, but still. Can't nail it down so far, could be only little things, but it's like the episode as a whole stopped shortly before it would have become something really great.
I liked the idea to bring up 2 cases and link them in some ways without connecting them directly. 2 different characters, different backgrounds, different stories but their lives intertwined in certain moments. Though the basic idea reminded me of other stories, especially some movies, the latest of that kind is Babel. Not original, but you don't always have to be original to make a good show.
And both stories for sure were tragic. Despite all differences, Madison and Skill shared something, though being young both knew downsides, shadows and dark sites of life, and both tried to keep up hope, dreams, struggled for something better. The passing of the dreamcatcher from Madison to Skill was a great symbol for that.
Ironic, that Toomy so much clung to that necklace, but was finally betrayed by it (could tell immidiately that the necklace would be an important clue to solve the case - watching too many crime shows. hehe), quite like his dream to be respected let him kill a person who had treated him with some respect. That's the thing, the 2 murderers shared, they both wanted to be respected, in different ways, but murdered the moment they felt like losing respect. But while you can feel some sympathy with Toomy, who didn't manage his own life, destroyed it with drugs, seemed to have lost his self-respect, Gibby was that kind of murderer no ones pities, an arrogant jerk, dwelling in his hubris, having no sense for respecting other people's lives, wanting to be seen as the cool big guy. Funny, that he became a stockbroker, instead of dealing drugs now dealing stocks - at once the ep. "Greed" came into my mind.
Cinematography of the ep was great. Was thinking all the time, that it reminded me of some other movie or video, but no idea which one. But one take of the clocks reminded me somewhat of the movie Mindhunter, that I'm sure of. The choice of songs was good, mostly. I like U2 very much, the music, the lyrics, so alone this makes this ep a nice one
to watch for me. And if you listen to the lyrics, they fit well to the scenes. Only think that the last song wasn't really fitting, but maybe because some personal memories are linked with that song, connecting this song more with love relationships.
Interesting scene with Kat and Lilly at the beginning. Remember the doubts Lilly had first when starting to investigate Cold Cases, if that would be worth so much effort? Stillman showed her the pic of the victim, telling her that's why. And now here we have Kat, saying "No one left to speak for Skill ... for Madison, except us. Maybe that is reason enough?" Trying to solve cold cases not because there is new evidence, better technical equipement or so, it's because the victims deserves it. CC focused from the start on the human factor, that makes this show different from some other very popular crime shows IMO.
And can only repeat, what others already wrote: Liked that it was a case connected with Kat, think like others that we had some great Kat scenes in this ep, for sure liked the team scene to open the episode, and find it sad for Vera, how things with Toni developed (though can understand her reasons). It was at least a good episode if not more.
