Tarik asked this question on another forum....Did Jonsey get charged with murder? I know he was holding Sadie down. But what of all the others in the group?~Naj Thanks, Naj, I've been working so much that I forgot about my question! Spoiler of sorts... * * * * * * I kinda saw it as a mercy-killing - he was crying while he covered her mouth/nose, but was releasing her from the raping at the same time.

Do you really think it was a mercy killing, Tarik?
Don't you think Jonsey didn't want his friends to know he loved Sadie and he was just going along with the murder? That's what I thought happend. He did it out of fear of not standing up for Sadie and black people because it wasn't acceptable at the time. It's just awful our mentality as a human race...especially us white folk.

I just downloaded this episode and finished watching it. What can I say? It's awesome! The case was very moving, and the funny/cute scenes where Scotty teases Lilly about kite are nice as well.
Like Tarik said, I think Jonesy killed Sadie because he thought it would save her from the pain and horror of being gangraped. I think that he loved Sadie, but he never really thought of her as a black person. He thought she could pass off as being white; had Sadie had more "black features" like her daughter did, Jonesy probably wouldn't have persued the relationship.

Yes I agree with Tarik and MF... it was a "mercy Killing" based on what MF explained that Jonsey was saving her from pain and horror of being gangraped..

Ok, now what happened to my post? I know I left one in this forum last week. Hm....this is strange. I was talking to Tarik, saying I didn't think it was a mercy killing. I thought the milkman didn't want his friends to know he was in love with Sadie. But he went too far. They wanted him to join in with the rape right? Even if he had joined in, at least Sadie would be alive. I wonder what would he have done if he hadn't seen Sadie's daughter picture? Would he have tried to stop his friends? I agree with Naj. lizzbitt

hi lizzbitt,
i don't know....that's why i asked you to come over for your response cause i was on this different train of thinking than the others. i know i screwed up an earlier post here but that was before tarik. i have no idea.

Yea, I assume he would have possibly had to rape her in front of them all. I'm not sure how these things were done by them in the past. Maybe they took turns doing the killing. I don't think he would have stopped his friends cause it wasn't acceptable to go against hating african americans at that time. He was there trying to get her to go with him to get out of there. He wasn't going to admit to his friends he was in love with her because he perceived her to be 'white' enough to be acceptable by his standards. And wasn't there something wrong with his thinking? She was black. Hiow did he think she wouldn't be discriminated/bashed? He was in la la land, I think.

The Letter should rerun on the 13th. I can't wait to see it again, I missed a lot of dialogue the first time around!

I re-watched this one, and I definitely get more out of these eps after a second viewing. I was so confused the first time around when Lilly said that she thought she made a mistake. Now, I'm thinking that she was referring to her performance in Kite's office. She went in there with an ax to grind, and she seemed to assume that Kite wasn't pushing the exumation b/c he was mad at her for not calling him. I think she realized that Kite did everything he could when he went to the police station and told them the judge denied the order due to lack of funding. He looked right at Lilly when he said sorry. She held her head down, almost in shame. Later when she was talking to Scotty, she seemed to realize that she had wrongfully assumed the worst of Kite on top of the fact that she never returned his phone calls. What do you guys think? Side note - I really liked the scene with Lilly and Scotty. It showed a vulnerable side to Lilly. Also, how cold was Lilly when she told Kite to call her...when the judge comes back with his decision. Ouch! That was harsh! I actually felt bad for Kite (that excited look on his face quickly disappeared) for a second, but then I remembered "Lovers Lane," and it passed!

The first time I saw this episode, I thought she could have been referring to her date with Kite in an earlier episode, or it could be referring to her treatment of him in general. But, you're right: she could be referring to her treatment of him over the exhumation. KM has an amazing ability to switch between tough to utterly feminine in the blink of an eye. I like both sides--in their appropriate setting. And, yes, she was harsh by putting a condition on his phone calls, but I bet that there were more women viewers who enjoyed that moment than winced at it. From a male point of view, if she was interested in him, she was acting in a self-defeating manner. What's more, I didn't see much chemistry in they're scenes together, and the writers seemed to be headed in that direction.

Good point Jeyon! Kathryn does such a fantastic job of playing all the layers of characters. I like the way Lilly can be tough one moment, and then falling apart inside over whether she did something wrong with Kite the next. As a woman, I can say that it's very real.

I just rewatched this episode. It was so sad! The rape scene was awful. I don't think it was a mercy killing. I think he was afraid of his friends' reaction, and also that he was confused: he had feelings fo Sadie but still hated black people. He never really decided between those two "sides". I don't believe he could really love her and be such a racist.
I also wondered why Jonesy was the only one to get arrested. I'm assuming the other ones are dead. They mentioned Pierce was dead, but (I think) nothing was said about the other ones.

I wondered that too Tatiana. Maybe they went after the others later. Since we only see the begining of the suspects' legal journey, it's possible that the others were arrested after what we saw. Or maybe they were all dead like you said. Even though they didn't actually kill Sadie, they were responsible for raping her. I hope they got what they deserved as well.

"The Letter" was another very good episode from season one. Very well done according to the subject matter as well. I'm glad they are re-airing it.
