This was a story heavy episode with much time devoted to the flashbacks and interviewing. There was mention on the Spoilers forum that this was supposely the season premiere. I'm happy they did not open the season with this particular episode as I didn't feel as much spark for this case. We have another Jeffries spotlighted episode. I didn't realize he had a nephew. It took me awhile till it was relayed or I caught that Leonard was his nephew. I loved the underscore at the beginning flashback scene showing the dead Clyde by his car. I didn't suspect anyone that they showed in the opening because that would have been too obvious. The Danders character was a hard sell for me. He looked like a kid. The other hard sell was Esther being black. I did see a quick shot of her as a young black woman in the closing which was believeable but it just didn't seem to jell with me that she was black the entire episode. (don't know if this makes any sense).. Also there didn't seem to be any romantic chemistry between young Esther and Clyde. I guess there are certain stories that grab my attention and others that don't. At first I was thinking of A Time to Hate to compare this episode to and The Letter. Both of those episodes are absolute top notch achievements for this series. Now having viewed the ep I don't feel this ep can be compared to either of those episodes. Of course, as always, in chat there were others who really liked this episode. The one thing CC has going for it is it's appeal for varied audiences. ~Naj

Count me among those who felt that this was a weaker outing for the series this week. I just didn't buy that Crumbs would have killed Clyde. I know people kill people for all sorts of stupid and unbelievable reasons, but Crumbs was the lovable type and not the kill-your-best-freind type. I think they were trying to surprise us, but I found myself scratching my head instead. On a positive note, the flashbacks were well done as usual and the case took a lot of twists and turns that kept me interested. I thought Esther as a black woman was a hard sell as well, unless she was supposed to be of mixed race. They never explained it, so I don't know. I liked meeting Jeffries' nephew, but I kind of wished they hadn't given him a rough story as well. Jeffries has enough hardache in his life. Also, did they open the case because Jeffries wanted to and Stillman agreed? I guess I was a little confused as to why/how the case was reopened. The savior of this episode was its Lilly-centric approach. We didn't see much of the others, with the exception of Jeffries. I think the thing with "Josie chippy" is that she takes away from the others like Vera in this episode. He barely made an appearance, and he would have been more involved had she not been there. Once again, she and Lilly barely interacted. I suppose it doesn't matter much now since they are not continuing with the character. It still strikes me as odd, though. Scotty took a back seat again, which I thought worked nicely. And, we're done with four episodes now and only a brief visual mention of George and Lilly. I really hope they address this soon. I'm dying to see what's going on with her. Overall, an okay episode. Next week we get to see Lilly with her hair down at work. She looked great in the previews!

I pretty much said everything I had to say at the chat last night. I thought this was a good episode, but weaker than the previous ones have been. And for me, I think 'Bad Night' was a hard episode to follow, because I loved that episode SO much. I'm glad this one was not the premiere, because I thought that (as a few others have said) this episode (IMO) lacked "the oomph" or "punch" that I think a season premiere needs to have. I can't say it enough, I love Jeffries. I'm so glad that we've been able to see more of him this season. I'm glad Lily and Jeffries were the center of this episode, although I wouldn't have minded more Vera. He's always good for a laugh! I think it was approiate that Scotty was more "in the shadows" for this episode. He'd been at the head of the last few cases, and I thought it was good for Jeffries to be able to step up to the plate. Like TVFan said, the thing about "Josie chippy" is that she does take time away from some of the other characters, such as Vera. I would complain about a lack of Lily/"Josie chippy" interaction, but I guess it doesn't matter anymore..... I loved the flashbacks. I think the black and white flashbacks are so cool, and are always done so well. Like Naj, I thought the underscore was amazing. I was disappointed that Crumbs was the one to kill Clyde. I had gotten attached to Crumbs through out the episode, and when I began to see that he was the one that had killed him, I got upset. So, basically I thought it was good. Not great, but good. My boyfriend (who's a total baseball nut) loved this one! Like Naj said, the good thing about this show, is it appeals to so many different people. One episode I don't find as good, someone else really loves. I'm really looking forward to Lily having her hair down next episode! Haha, it's the little things in life that make me happy....like a TV character wearing her hair down... How pathetic!

Well I've just this minute finished watching this episode and I've found that I don't need to type a lenggthy opinion of this episode cos Soccerulz has said everything I want to say!! Thanks for that Soccer, you've saved me time ;D ;D Must add though, that I loved Lilly's hair, clothes and make-up, she looked stunning as per usual. However despite looking so good all the time I need to see some of whats going on inside Lilly's head at the moment!! Lets have some personal moments from her now please!! :smile28: :smile28: Can't wait to see her with her hair down at work!!! That rubbing her face with her hands bit wasn't in this episode either like I was expecting so I'm wondering when we are going to see that? ? Cos the other bits in that season preview were from this episode.

I can't believe "Josie chippy" is being blamed for taking airtime away from other characters when she only had like 3 scenes, meanwhile characters like Scotty and Jeffries had multiple scenes per segment! I could see if she was hogging up screentime and being forced down your throat in every segment, but she's not.
Baffling.

Kinda glad the one who's name we shall not say's leaving. If I blinked I would've missed her scenes, lol... But like you guys said: it's a moot point since "Josie chippy" will be gone. But seriously, Scotty and Jeffries were heavily involved in this episode. I thought Lily, "Josie chippy" and Vera were the least focused.
And I must be a rare viewer who enjoys when I see any of the detectives since this show is based mostly on the actor-of-the-week.

The thing is that game only works if the person being blamed is actually getting airtime! ~Vicky~

I don't think you understand what I was getting at in my post.I didn't mean what I said, to be taken the way you are taking it sjbfanfirst.
It's no secret that, while I like "Josie chippy", I have thought that having 6 main characters was a little much. In some of the episodes (IMO), the writers didn't do as good a job working in all the characters. I thought that this was one of those episodes.
It's not the characters fault. There are just so many lead characters, and some have to be the "center" of a particular episode.

I agree with Naj and others about how one of the wonderful things about CC is its ability to connect with all different people through its varying episodes. I think it's one of the show's greatest strengths. It's fun to come on here and read the different comments and perspectives. Sometimes other members point things out that I missed, and then I realize that an episode I might have dismissed because it didn't appeal to me actually had some good things in it.
For instance with this episode (which I didn't love and I didn't hate, just somewhere in the middle), Soccerulz pointed out how nice it was to have a Jeffries-centric ep. I really couldn't agree more. We had two in a row and it was really nice. As I've said before, he's my second favorite character. I only wished he and Lilly had had more scenes together because I love when they work together. I really liked their interrogation scene with Esther. They balance each other out nicely.

What would we do without you Naj to keep everyone in line?? Bravo to you!! It's really sad that the situation has come to this. Yes it's good to be passionate about an actor/character but to take things to far is unacceptable. I have to admit that I am an extreamely passionate CC and Kathryn Morris fan and have often been left feeling mad about things I have read. I do hope too that the one who's name we shall not say gets a role on some other show. All we [or I] want is too come here to chat about my fav show and my fave girl without having to defend my reasons of wanting to see more of her. Anyway Naj said it all so i'll just shut up now. Just thought I'd add my rant and get all that out instead of letting my blood boil!!! ;D ;D And back to this episode. I watched it again and liked it more the second time. Apart from Vera not being in it much there was a nice balance of scenes for the main characters and it was a good story. I like baseball though so I guess that helps. It's nice to now know so much more about Jeffries and his family, and know that in his home life he isn't totally lonely like I thought he was after the episode [how awful I can't remember which one] where he spends his birthday alone. I'm so looking forward to next week though!! I have high hopes for that episode and can't wait to see Lilly's hair down as I've said hundreds of times already. ;D ;D

I just watched this episode. I hate to say it but I wasn't impressed. Maybe I just couldn't connect because I don't know anything about baseball? Don't know really, but the story seemed a bit weak, the acting a little "off" (as some of you had already mentioned) and I didn't buy Crumbs as the killer. He was too much of a nice guy. Sure hot headed people do crazy things when they're angry--but swing a bat at his best friend? I don't know. Only thing I liked about this episode were the flashbacks and the ending sequence. Good music, good photography. I liked the "then and now" thing they did in the end, especially when Jeffries saw the ghost. The bit about his nephew and sister I felt was a bit much (ANOTHER immature irresponsible sister? Isn't it too much?), but I love hearing about Jeffries no matter what and afterwards I realized they could work on this, make his sister be so irresponsible Jeffries may end up looking after his nephew, and then he'll have a family. So I guess that could work. I know this ep was supposed to have a lot of impact, racially speaking--but it didn't. At least not to me. EDIT: Hmm I just realized everything I said had already been mentioned by TVFan. Sorry, TV. Anyway this just goes to show how much we think alike regarding eps. :smile73:
