Well, I FINALLY got to see this entire episode.... Thank you TNT! The first time this aired, I had video problems throughout the episode and entirely missed the last five minutes or so. I don't think I mentioned this earlier, but I really liked the older Otis and loved watching the relationship with his daughter go through the changes it did over the course of the episode. Very touching.

Just saw this episode on TNT. It's easy to get angry at Betty's husband on one hand, but in the other one...sad to say but in her condition, Betty was NOT safe to be around Otis. I have no doubt she loved him with every bit of her heart...but sadly, unless there was 24/7 supervision, there was no way to ensure what happened once with Otis wouldn't happen again. As for Anton, he was basically blackmailed into killing Betty by the evil head of the hospital (I hate how he died before he could be held accountable for his actions) due to those false allegations that sadly would have been believied. And in a sad way, Betty was already dead, she could walk and talk but was basically a zombie thanks to Nurse Olson. I'm glad she was arrested for her part in Betty's death as well. Not only did make her a zombie, she made no effort to stop the blackmail of Anton or the death of Betty.

I have seen this episode before but I didn't think of some things concerning "Josie chippy".
I feel it was Gil's fault because he is the one who opened the door when talked to "Josie chippy" with Scotty there. Maybe Scotty was trying to get "Josie chippy" to see that people are not being fair to her when they talk about her but I think she didn't really care. I never did like her much though.
Sad episode though and glad they got the nurse and the orderly.

Speaking from experience... I won't rip apart Betty's husband. Betty did love Otis..but the sad fact remains she WAS a danger to him. My grandmother (god rest her soul) was also a kind, caring loving woman. But sadly, like Betty, her mind betrayed her over time. Won't get into long details but my grandmother managed to avoid hospitals...because my grandfather was around...but also because my mom was old enough by the time hers kicked in to handle herself. Otto wasn't..and sadly, if my mother had been the same age Otto was, my grandfather would have had to the same hellish, painful decsion Otto's father did. To let her go. Sadly, love alone isn't enough if your mind isn't in control. Committed is painful for me because my grandmother was just like Betty, a loving woman who had a mental disease through no fault of her own. Who loved everyone around but was sadly a danger to everyone at the same time. I loved my grandmother to death.. but when she finally passed away, both my mom and I, were happy that she had found peace... (and if this sounds cold I'm sorry) that she had made it an extra quarter century after my grandfather passed without taking anyone else with her.

I suppose it is easy to judge Nurse Olsen now, but back then this was the state psychiatry. Surely she could not go beyond the boundaries of what was known at the time. Now we know the consequences that can result from a Lobotomy; I am not sure this was the case back in 1954. Even then, I think it would have been a last resort as they told Carmen that she had "run out of chances".
I always got confused by the end of this episode. What exactly happened in the park? Did Anton actually attack her or did he just let her keep walking until she collapsed?
