When I saw this was to be a story about coal miners I was interested being that my father, grandfather and uncle was one. But I have to say that the content was disinteresting. A more interesting storyline would have been about the UMWA going on strike with scabs crossing the line and one gets killed and turns up dead in the mine as a result. Things were different (let's say in the 60's - I don't know about 1947 or if there was a union at that time). The miners got away with doing a lot of stuff that would be criminal these days. Anyhow, I didn't care for this episode. I thought Lilly was funny in her reply to Joseph when he said he loved her. "Yea"? And did Lilly go with Ray after all? I thought she didn't but then she didn't call Joseph? She must of been thinking. I enjoyed Lilly's interrogation of Alice but again not much of a story for her to work with. Was Alice part Irish? She sounded Irish and I did like her part both present and flashback. eta: Oh wow the next ep previews look really good!

Is it wishful thinking on my part or are they starting to lighten up a little on Lilly's makeup?? Oh, I hope so! I want the real Lilly back, not this over done fasion model Lilly!
Faboulous the way Lil looked like she might hurl after Joseph told her he loved her. And Ray's back! As she told him she wouldn't go for a ride, but she still moved closer to him. Go Ray! Boo, Joseph!
I always like the racial eps on this show. They seem to highlight all the differences and discriminations while at the same time, they somehow make it look as if that mindset is beyond petty. Which it is, but I've never seen a show before that makes it so clear without being preachy. I love the forbidden romance of this ep (Urgh--I'm a sap. DF needs to jump on me hard!)
Lilly's interrogations are too soft, too sympathetic.
It rang false when Lilly told J. she loved him. It sounded more like an "omg, this other guy is back in town and I think I'm still hot for him, so I better save myself by proclaiming my love for you"
FANTASTIC-that she ignored J's call at the end. Conflict! Betrayel! Turmoil!! Oh joy, joy!
The case and the murder were only OK for me, but I'm always more focused on the inter-personal conflicts anyway, so I liked this ep based on the racial theme and Lilly's drama.

So does Lilly really love Joseph? I love the beginning as with her and Joseph so cute, epecially when he kisses her with food on her lips . but what I don't get is that her cell rang twice and it was him why didn't she answer it. Is she afraid to fall in love, but she tells him that she loves him. Jefferies and Vera cornering her on the street was funny, Ray seemed to be a little pushy and trying to get her for a ride. What happened that night he left off? i love the group at first thursdays and them teasing her. See I told everyone that Joseph has a job, and no he wasn't to syrupy sweet and cat cuddling in this one. Geez the man isn't a sap like everyone thinks here, give him some credit here Why did Lilly do only one interrogation, and why aren't she working with Scotty?? She always works with Scotty, this season they haven't worked together

I gave this an excellent. So far this is the best episode of the season. Aye, I'll give more thoughts about it later.

This episode was good, but not the best. Sort of a filler episode until something better comes along. Vera was great with Joseph. And I liked how they handled Ray. I liked how Lilly handled it too. Music was unfamiliar but interesting, but I knew who the killer was going to be before the big clue near the end. The main suspects here had too strong a motive to be guilty. The end was nice. Good to see Joe Washington's picture on the wall again. Joe was the victim in episode 1.5 "The Runner".

Put me down for excellent because that was the one word that kept coming into my head as I was watching this one tonight. This episode was solid from top to bottom. We finally had a unsympathetic doer, a plausible murder scene, and a believable motive! But wait, there's more! The case was compelling and I was completely enthralled in Alice and Donovan's relationship. The flashbacks were gorgeous (thanks to the awesome direction of David Von Ancken) and the story was very interesting. I had a feeling that the lighter was going to come back into play from the moment we saw it. It was this season's lucky charm ("The River"). I could seriously hug Veena for giving us awesome cases and a lot of personal stuff without sacrificing either. Loving this season so far! Anyway, why am I liking this Lilly/Joseph/Ray storyline so much? I should hate it considering the fact that I want Lilly with Joseph. Or at least I thought I did. I'm beginning to feel as conflicted as Lil. She and Ray do have some sort of fire together, but they don't have anything substantive (that we know about), but Joseph LOVES Lilly and he's what she needs in her life. One reason I'm loving this story -- it allows for a lot of personal stuff with Lil. This is something that I'm never going to boo. So, the question of the night -- Does Lilly love Joseph? I don't think so. I think she felt bad not saying it back and then felt guilty for sort of kind of considering Ray's proposal. Like Michelle, I think she still has feelings for him. When she told Joseph that she loved him, there was hesitation in her voice. Add that to the fact that she had been avoiding him since he told her and then the fact that she ignored his phone call at the end of the episode (after she supposedly decided that she "loved" him) and I think you've got one scared Lilly. Things were cool when they didn't seem that serious. It was fun to joke about not getting any sleep later and to laugh over donuts and sugar on his face (BTW -- Kathryn/Lilly was so adorable in this scene!), but using the "L" word is something different. It's serious, and Lilly doesn't do well with serious in the relationship sense. Plus, she has Ray asking for her help, and there are no commitment strings attached. This episode really illustrated the fact that despite all of the steps forward that Lilly has made, she's still as conflicted and issue-ridden as ever. She wants to change, but wanting and actually changing are two different things. How fabulous was that scene with Lilly, Joseph, Vera and Jeffries??!! I laughed so hard. Favorite line of the night: Vera: Why can't I meet a nice girl at a halfway house? Lilly: Save it! She was so embarrassed and it made things even easier for Vera (who shouldn't be talking considering the fact that he was wearing the same shirt for the 3rd? 4th? day in a row ). Despite Lil's issues, I did think that she made a nice recovery when Joseph told her how he feels. Her "Yeah?" and "I don't know what to say" were honest, but not panicky. That is until he walked away! Overall, another strong outing for this show which seems to be having a strong season thus far. As usual, I have a few caps over at Pass the Remote to tied you over. ETA: I forgot to mention that this episode answered a lot of our Joseph questions. He's working for the courts (at risk jouveniles) and he and Lil are not living together. Yay for clarity!

TVFan, that thing about Vera's shirt was priceless. Scotty knows how to make a suggestion about dressing anytime. And Vera could care less. Perhaps I should give this episode another chance. I can since I have DVR and have the episode recorded, in HDTV Widescreen. And with a new DVD player/recorder, it's almost too much to handle.

I almost died when I saw Ray pull up! No way!! and sure enough,it was him ;D So my guess when he mentioned to Lilly that the motorcycles he sold were hot? and he needed her help? She must have gotten him out of another situation before, probably the last time they met. Probably that's why she was cool to him and didn't want him at her work place. \ As for Vera and Jeffries meeting up with Joseph and Lilly.. I almost died laughing All in all, I thought it was an excellent show; it gave a glimpse of what coal miners went thru with no Union and also with racial issues. I wanted hit that one guy that was in jail that Jeffries and Scotty interviewed.

How come Lilly didn't say a good bye to Joseph when she went inside with Vera and Jefferies, Joseph looked kinda hurt Ray acts like a kid riding up to the sidewalk and asking" Hey Lil want to go for a ride". C'mon man , your an adult try using the words " Hey Lil, what's up " or something else . Geez he acts so pushy cause he wants her badly but after Lilly's cell rings he knows she's with someone else, but isn't going to give up
Anyone Notice that Lilly was wearing the same shirt from the last time they showed Ray at her house?

It's nice to hear someone else notice this. michelle said this too: Yep, it was supposed to sound like that and it was excellently done. I loved it. r2k said: That's what I thought too. It was just another story of white man/black woman taboo love. eh... TVFan said: The Lilly storyline is the saving grace of this ep and we see her now already in conflict of what she wants with two men. Loved the donut scene too. I'm enjoying the range we get to see Lilly experience. As well chuckled through the Joseph & Lilly meetup with Jeffries and Vera. The camera angle made it look like Lilly was this little girl caught among tall/big men. I laughed there too. And Vera is funny having worn the same shirt for days. eta: I gave it a Good rating only for the Lilly storyline. I really dislike to give an ep a higher rating for personal storylines. I feel it should be the case first and foremost.

The case and the murder were only OK for me, but I'm always more focused on the inter-personal conflicts anyway, so I liked this ep based on the racial theme and Lilly's drama. Couldn't agree more with any of that. Lilly's appearance is definitely starting to grab my attention more... but not in a good way. I can handle her hair being down (though I still don't know why that is... anyone care to help me out?) But the make-up makes it seem like she's changing herself for Joseph. I'm definitely not opposed to make-up all together; I'm all for the female in the workplace vibe. Its just a little too much. I'm definitely liking the way they're playing the Lilly/Joseph/Ray thing. Honestly, I don't want to see Lilly with either of them at the moment, and I don't think Lilly really loves Joseph. At least, not yet. Joseph is definitely giving me a clingy type feeling. And I also think that Lilly's profession of love was completely fake. Well done by KM and writers. The racial aspect was interesting in the case. The writers always manage to mix it up when they address issues that they've covered before. But... this is the second episode with the white man/black woman thing. How about black man/white girl? Good to see Joe Washington's picture on the wall again. Joe was the victim in episode 1.5 "The Runner". Ah! Yes, I liked that as well. Was that what he was showing Kat at the end?

Something I had noticed, When Alice says that Donovan's wife couldn't get pregnant and she took to the bottle. The camera zooms up on Lilly's face, who appears to have a strange reaction to it. Could it be possible that she can't have any kids ?

I gave this an OK It wasn't as strong as the 2 previous eppy's, actually it was odd it kinda reminded me of that weird Ben Affleck movie Bounce I think it's called , but I always love the "Oldies" cases. -Wasn't Alice's accent Haitian? The Lilly & Joseph thing was also odd, you can see that she uncomfortable in this LOVE-thing Did someone notice what Ray was asking for, A favor, make Lilly pull some strings and then she replied No not this time-Has she done it in the past?? The scene where Alice turn on the Jukebox and dances with Donovan was very, very sweet ;D

I go for a good. TVFan already said most of what I think about the episode, but the whole story was a little predictable, so not an excellent. Nevertheless flashbacks were well done, the ep well written, I mostly like the oldie episodes and I always have a heart for fighters like Donovan. And the case left some room for more Lilly story, so we should be quite happy. At least everybody interested in Lilly's private life. Lilly's face in the donut scene at the beginning, just when Joseph had left, was priceless in my opinion. It was like, "ooops, what now..." Guess, so far she avoided actually to think about her feelings or how deep feelings in this relation might get, she just tried to enjoy it, have some fun, but now things get more serious. And Lilly is not sure what to make of it. And the scene with Lilly, Joseph, Jeffries and Vera will make it for best comedy scene of this season, already bet on that. Naj mentioned it, some interesting camera angle, letting Lilly look like a little girl flanked by 2 of her big brothers, checking her b/f. Killingly funny. Uhm, and Ray... Ok, I would walk off with him for a couple of days immidiately, but that's not the point. Not sure how all of this will turn out, but could create an interesting situation. I'll wait and see.

Can't say that I love you thing wouldn't came a pit suprise. I was like whatto f@*#..?!?That sure was fast...., But at least the show is moving on, for a change. That's a good thing. Otherwise the ep wasn't that interesting. Even there was this white guy/black girl thing going on, Sandhogs turned out kinda boring. Those "really old" cases rarely are good, that's why I'm hoping more cases timed between 80's and this century in future.
But what was good in the episode was all the Lil/Joseph and Lil/Ray messes going on. I really, really, REALLY hope that she wouldn't mess things with Joseph... But can't say I wouldn't understand her actions. Everything after Joseph said "I love you" it started to feel like way too familliar... Like that why she didn't answer his calls and made a lousy excuses for advoiding him. But at least even I'm a better liar than she seemed to be. That "I love you too" couldn't possibly sound to be anymore forced out.
But anyway, beside that L/J thing, hopefully the next episode will be better than this one...

The only thing I enjoyed about last night's episode was the ending scenes with the Louis Armstrong song. I like neither Joseph or Ray. Both are too pretty and too stereotyped, the sweet angel vs the bad boy. Get on with it or get real guys, flawed but of good character and lovable...like Vera and Scotty and Stillman and Will.
