Tuned into this ep last night, and I really liked this episode. This ep struck quite a personal chord with me. As a former student athlete, I identified quite a bit with the Title IX angle, the competitive spirit of Andi, dad's pressure, etc. I must admit I went through very similar experiences in my younger days, but I had the benefit of competing and participating post-Title IX, so ... I owe the "Andi" generation a lot.
Highlights:
Vera and Julie ... this was so poignant. Jeremy Ratchford and Nina Siemaszko were just tragically beautiful in their scene together. It got me thinking of a quote from Kathryn (from the Podcast last fall, when she was talking about filming "Committed"): "... and the way they shoot it. I am so impressed with the work they do when I'm not there." This was so true for this scene, this sub-plot, these characters and these actors. For me, it was interesting to see Vera's wife for the first time. She was sort of this small, frail, delicate lady. I am not sure what I imagined, but the way he was always talking about their problems/issues, I kind of imagined her as being this loud, over-bearing difficult woman. She appeared just the opposite. The story about her buying the white coat ... priceless. So much was said WITHOUT being said. Kudos to the writers for the less-is-more dialogue approach in that scene.
Lots of Lilly ... she was all over the place. Had to love that, since there have been a good handful of S3 eps where I've been wondering where she is. LOL! The comment I made a few episodes back about her looking rather corpse-like in appearance seems to be on its way out (as TVFan helped me understand). Thus, she's not appearing as "sickly" to me anymore, but she is still definitely a different Lilly - good, but different.
Lilly vs. Eric ... I wasn't expecting him as the killer. Had to love Lilly's "sport" comment. Too funny. Classic Lilly line, I think.
Ending Montage ... I loved all the snap shots, particularly with the dad showing Andi's sister some love. Poor gal was just the "other" daughter up until that point. The Wall of Fame for female athletes through the years ... great tribute. Loved Lilly walking court side ... but what exactly was she doing there? Just out for a stroll? LOL! I guess I didn't see the connection as to exactly why she was really in that spot at that moment (as in, when she usually is going to arrest someone, filing the case file away, giving a picture back to a family member, etc.). But then again, in S1's "Love Conquers Al", she was just hanging out in the bleachers, so ... it's a Lil' thing, which is good by me.
Questionable:
Andi having no feelings and/or clued-out about the importance / realities of Title IX ... I found this hard to believe and/or a huge stretch on the part of the writers for accuracy. Yes, she wasn't an "activist," and just wanted to play the game. I can relate to this - I was never an activist, either. However, sticking your head in the sand when you are the up-and-coming-possibly-go-pro-female-tennis-player-after-Billie-Jean's-victory ...? Huh? I cannot imagine a female athlete of that time would essentially be that dense - even with a one-track mind about just being able/wanting to play. That would be like NOT knowing there is a war going on when YOU are part of that war.
All in all, really liked this ep.
