I thought this one was one the best of the season. I like the eps that are sorta "lighthearted" and not so doom-and-gloom, and I think the tone was approriate for the 1st ep back after the strike.
The actor who played Andy was awesome! He really brought that character to life for me. Loved the little snow scene between Andy and Emma. I find myself like the more romantic episodes, so this really pulled me in.
Vera was in top form in this one. When he gave his "special sign" to Scotty, I laughed out loud for the first time in a long time watching a CC ep. Great stuff. I contend that CC as a whole is closer to being a comedy than a pure drama.
Probably my favorite thing about this ep was the sound design! Notice during the scenes in the school hallway, there's little to no "ambient sound" in the background. They have the Vera character mention something about this right away, saying how it's freaking him out. I think they used it well, without being too "gimicky."
Also it was cool that during some scenes with Andy and another deaf person, you would get long stretches where the only sound was Michael Levine's musical score. I'm a big fan of his work on CC, so this ep was a real treat for me.
On the downside there might have been some plot holes here and there -- I don't know anything about the deaf, the implants, how the body was disposed of, etc. I can forgive all of this because I was so darned entertained, more so than I have been in a LONG time with CC.
Great ep!

>>the only sound was Michael Levine's musical score.
I'm almost certain this was classical music//Bach.
One thing I've noticed this season is that one of the characters will say the name of the episode. In this one it never happened, but allusions to it were made.
1. When Andy is talking to Emma during that one scene, he points out that Emma keeps calling him Candy. Extra C tossed in as a minor mistake.
2. During the closing montage, (and maybe this was a mistake.) but Andy's box is labeled as "Andy M."
If you overanalyze (like me) You essentially have "Andy in C minor."

over at the spoiler section, I pointed out that in classical music, "C minor" is symbolic for a heroic struggle.

i guess not being able to see the actual rape scenes in Lover's Lane, Death Penalty, Our Boy Is Back and Offender would be deemed as plot holes?
You see I dont need nor want to see such graphic scenes. It's not necessary. In Lover's Lane and Offender in particular, the victims' final scenes portraying the precipitation of the rape and murder was disturbingly effective enough to see the fear in their eyes when they realized what was going to happen to them. That's part of what makes good directing. Again, this isn't CSI to gather physical evidence and science reasoning to figure out who done it. Cold Case is about triggering effective emotional responses and sentimism through good use of music, stories, and subtle post production tricks. Aside from the music, I think its terrific how they use shooting techniques and film stock of the time era being portrayed to really give you the feel.
No show is accurately going to portray anything or anyone. It is assumed that normal intelligent people know this. It's just as wrong and hypocritical to complain about inaccuracies as if there ever was one to begin with.

Whoa... how does wishing a crime story was believable have anything at all to do with wanting to see graphic rape scenes??? I think I must have missed something here.
And the plot holes have nothing to do with the direction, it's the writing. Which for the most part is good, in terms of dialogue, etc. The direction is usually brilliant, which is one of the reasons I watch the show.
I agree, it's a different kind of crime show. I love all those things about it that you mentioned. And I'm sure it's a challenge for the writers to come up with plausable ways for solving cold cases without the use of DNA and other physical evidence. When they do it well I give them props, when I don't buy it I say so - but still enjoy the show for it's many other attributes.
Are you saying it's impossible for a scripted show to be true to life in any way?
Hmm, I really hope you're not calling me stupid. I'll assume not as I did mention that I do not expect it to always be 100% believable. And I fail to see what is "hypocritical" about stating an opinion regarding a television show. Everyone (I assume, maybe incorrectly) has things they like and dislike about their favorite shows. Obviously everyone here likes Cold Case enough to spend time on a message board about it. So, are we not allowed to have anything but 100% positive feelings about it? Please tell me, as I am new here. Still don't see what's hypocritical, but if less than glowing reviews are not welcomed here, I will respect that and post elsewhere.
Once again, this show is fiction, not fantasy. I think many fans would be miffed if, on the next all new Cold Case, a big white unicorn showed up at the Philly PD with information regarding a leprechaun's murder. Well, for me it doesn't have to be so extreme. I feel the same way when a recorded confession pops up 80+ years after a murder and it was on a relative's shelf the whole time (as in 4.21 Torn) or a kid gets bludgeoned at his school by another kid and no trace of blood, let alone the body, is found for two years. But being irritated by plot holes or inconsistencies does not make me less of a fan of the show. It just means I don't love every little thing about every single episode. Does anyone?
Sorry if I sound defensive, but "wrong and hypocritical" to complain? For reals?

I liked this episode and found it to be excellent. It seemed like a classic ep although I wondered how they would handle the flashbacks having to use sign language but I found it worked quite well. I found it difficult to believe the deaf parents in the year 2006 wouldn't want their son to have an opportunity to hear. Vera was a stitch. It appears he did learn to be able to read sign but wasn't co-ordinated enough to use sign to communicate evidenced by the interrogation he and Jeffries had. Carlos: "did leah say I got into a fight?" I laughed at this as Vera could clearly understand Carlos' signing and Jeffries was caught off by it. The Kat side story is interesting. Overall the ep had a "feel good" vibe to it like the gang is all back. Lilly did look pretty good in the ep too!

[music geek] When I heard that this episode was going to be about a deaf pianist, I immediately thought of Beethoven. Many of his most famous works depict epic struggles (Fifth Symphony, Pathetique Sonata), and are in C minor. I was a touch disappointed that they didn't use more classical music in this one, but the music they did choose worked well. [/music geek]

You mean this box: Looks like it says "Rierdan, A" to me According to Wikipedia: C minor has been associated with heroic struggle since Beethoven's time, with the quintessential work in the key being his Symphony No. 5; see Beethoven and C minor.

Now that you and TRB have explained it, it makes a lot of sense that it would've been a good idea. It also could've been the only episode that makes it on DVD because they don't have to pay royalties to the artist!

No. I'm just saying anything on television is a mere fragmented portrayal of a million characteristics people of any creed may have. Just because you see a blacks depicted on television as hip hop lovers and asians as foreigners doesn't mean it's always the case though the show may use the plot of those type of blacks that are deep in hip hop culture and asians that are new to american soil.
By the way, my post was not directed at you. It was directed at those who are nitpicking plot holes that are questionable at best.
Absolutely not. You sound reasonable. Again the antecedent was not directed at you.

Thanks for the image Riche! I don't have cable, or satellite, and so sometimes somethings get a bit muddled and/or blurry.

KM looked stunning in this ep.
I thought it was great. Very sad. I really like Emma and Andy's realationship.
I loved the scene with Lilly on the balcony. I do think she was trying to "listen with her eyes" like in the flashback scene with Emma and Andy.
I also enjoyed Kat's subplot. I loved the scene with Kat and Vera.

I completely agree, irishkale. The sound design was especially fantastic in this one. It really helped put me into the story more than any other element this week. And like you, I enjoy Michael Levine's musical score immensely.
I also enjoyed that scene between Andy and Emma in the snow. There was something whimsical and honest about it. I really enjoyed their connection because it served as a nice contrast to the overall deaf world and hearing world conflicts in this episode.
