Yep... they fooled him by letting him think there were ppl behind that one way mirror... but eventually when he confessed, the parents and children did show up.. I thought that tape was of Lilly's mom and her Hi Eurache, I originally thought that they were playing Mr. Freely and there wasn't anyone behind the mirror. But I wasn't sure. And the tape at the end was over my head. lol! Poor Lilly. She needs a hug! ~Naj

I'm just as bad. If it wasn't for my mom, I never would have known why the kids were there at the end or about the tape being about Lilly and her mom! We were talking on the phone after I saw it the first time, and I was so clueless! It makes it so much better once you realize what's going on.

It took me a couple minutes to figure it out myself. But what tipped me off was the way she was acting. If it had been someone else besides herself, i think she wouldnt have looked as sad. I think your right naj, lilly definitely needs a hug. A very BIG hug. :yep:

;_; Boy, this seems so sad. I missed this episode and I regret it so much... The only scene I watched was the one that Toya lets Mr. Freely inside the apt when Rosie is showering then I changed channels, don't have an idea why I did that, how stupid... But my friend is going to burn it to dvd for me! Yay. I'm so happy. I can't wait to watch it.

oh this episode, so awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!! i think lilly was very beautiful to watch in this ep, how she first disliked rosie and then changed her mind and in the end she was so caring for rosie and that song, Heaven. well that song was so beautiful. well really i normally don't cry (specially not at crime-shows) but when i watched the end again and how lilly said men like Mr Freely would never stop and they can't be stopped and that you can´t protect yourself of them and she got that sad expression in her face which says i know that from my own experience, well lily could have been sexually abused in her past as far as we know, it´s definitley a possibility! an then when the song began to play, tears were just falling, i couldn't stop, i was lucky my family was already asleep, they would have though i finally got insane.. *sigh* well again, a really good ep in which i also liked Scotty more than i do normally if that's possible, he was kinda cute how he tried to cheer lilly up when she told him about her childhood though it wasn´t the most sensitive thing to do...

Caught the re-run last night on TNT ... this is the second time I've seen this ep (first was on the Emmy tape for S1).
I really like this ep's storyline - incredibly moving. I also like the way just enough of Lilly's childhood/past are sprinkled into the story - it's not over the top, yet it's just enough to let you know she is carrying some serious baggage. It is the old "Less is more" saying, and I think that is done so well in this ep (which includes several of the scenes with Rosie; the actress had amazing reactionary abilities; no lines necessary; you got what she was thinking/feeling from just the expression on her face ... similar to how we can sense changes in Lilly by a simple tweak here or there in Kathryn's expression.)
I remember watching it the first time, and noticing straight away that when Lilly and Scotty go to Department of Child Services to interview Freely, Lilly is awkwardly darting her eyes around the office, kind of unsettled, uncomfortable - I liked how Kathryn chose to play that; it said it without saying it. Additionally, how she just lays into Freely about him being 'God' to the women that were his cases, or Rosie's dad - daring him to hit her. That was brilliant. And at the end, when she's talking to Rosie about 'healing' ... just a lot of powerful moments throughout the ep.
I know many reference "A Time to Hate" as one of the best episodes of that first season - and even still today, it is held with the highest regard. I believe I read an article whereby Meredith Stiehm mentions/is quoted as saying they are always still trying to measure up to that ep. Interestingly, I actually found "Fly Away" to be more powerful, and was, in my opinion, the stronger ep on the Emmy tape that first season.

I feel the same way LillyKat. I thought that "A Time to Hate" was wonderful, but "Fly Away" is my season 1 stand-out. Weren't those interrogations just great? I loved how she challenged Rosie's father to hit her since he liked hitting girls so much. And that scene with Freely - just wow! The point where she tells him that all the women are lined up on the other side of that window to tell the police how Freely hurt their little girls and then the camera pans to reveal that no one is standing there is SO powerful. It still gives me chills every time I see it!

I always find myself crying at the end, this is one of my favorite season 1 episodes. Oh I know, if it is not Rosie tugging at your heart strings at the end when she is saying "What did I do?" it is Lilly with her "Did your Mom ever forget to feed you?" speech! Just wonderful, probably in my top three favorite episodes of all time!
