I will say, though, I agreed with his criticisms about what CC is doing to KM as an actress. His "golden cage" comment was, IMHO, spot on. I've started to feel this as I've gone back and watched a lot of Kathryn's other non-CC stuff. I swear, at times, she's MORE interesting and compelling in her OLDER stuff than she is right now on CC. Now, that's not to say she still doesn't wow us with her performance as Lilly. She absolutely does. She just did the other week with "The Road." Watch "Sherry Darlin'" or "Mind Hunters" or "The Woods," and you just cannot take your eyes off her.
But, she is performing within the confines of the procedural format, with character growth so slowly doled out it is almost ridiculous and with absolutely NO input on her part as to the character's direction (that is being strictly controlled by the showrunner(s)). She mentioned at the screening I attended for Champ that the film was a freeing experience for her, and I think that is because as an artist, she's allowed (on projects such as this) to contribute much more to her character. She's not being locked into one way that may/may not be what she feels is best as an actor and/or allow her to really "go there" with her performance. This reminds me of one of the things she said she loved about working with Steven Spielberg: the collaborative environment he encourages with his actors - almost like a playground. Come in try this; what do you think/yeah, let's go with that, etc. That does NOT happen on CC (and that's not to bag only on CC; other procedurals are this way as well, but some ARE collaborative ... it depends on the show).
But for CC, it's not. And Executive Producer Veena Sud said as recently as last summer (in KM's Emmy magazine article) that it's frustrating for the actors not to be able to totally have the say in how their characters are to be, etc. Given the fact KM is a very giving actress - wants to contribute, wants to exchange ideas - I actually think it's gotten WORSE for her as the CC series has gone along (as in, the feisty, vibrant, sassy Lilly of early seasons gave us more of what KM does best; the closed down, quiet zombie approach, not so much). So, IMHO, and kind of along the lines of Rod's criticism, KM is kinda going through the motions, and doing her absolute best with what she's given as far as the show is concerned. And whilst I do believe she still delivers powerhouse performances, they may not necessarily be showcasing ALL of what she is capable of as an actor given she has to stay within the confines of a formulaic character and/or writing of that character.

Yeah, I get all that, and I've also read where KM is frustrated with her lack of input on CC. I also agree that it seems to have gotten worse as the show goes on. But what Lurie said was that "the writing was not up to her level" or some such thing, which I just felt was an unnecessary thing to say (even if I agreed with it, which I'm not sure I do - and that is not in any way a knock on KM or anyone else in the CC cast - but I digress) I mean, he essentially said she was too good for the show that made her famous, which she is still a part of. I just don't see how it related to her performance in this film whatsoever.
I don't know, maybe my perception is clouded by the creepiness factor. And the over-enunciating-saliva-mouth. Huh.
