Alex and Casey are in the living room. "Been Caught Stealing" by Jane’s Addiction plays. A younger Lucia brings the 2 kids soda.
Alex: Thanks, Ms.Markson.
Casey: Yea, thanks mami.
Alex: What time do we go to the pizza place?
Casey: A few minutes.
Alex: Aight, but what about Vinnie and John?
Casey: Ah, screw them.
Alex: Hah.
Cut to them at the pizza place.
Casey: Oh god, those geeks are staring at us through the window.
Alex: What is with them?!
Alex gets up.
Casey: Alex, is okay, just ignore them.
Alex: Nah, nah, I gotta go talk to them.
Alex gets up and we watch him through the window, Casey is close up to the screen, but she blurs and Alex and the 2 teens are in clear focus. Vinnie is a young hispanic teen, and John is a young white man.
Alex appears to be arguing with the 2 teens. None of it is heard at first, until we cut to outside.
Vinnie: You know what? I don’t freaking have to leave you 2 lovebirds alone, nieder does John!
Alex: I’m really d**n sick of you 2 jerk***s messing with me and Casey. What is your d**n problem?
The 2 teens laugh, and push Alex around a bit before Casey comes outside.
Casey: Back off, okay?
John: We’re gonna get you 2 little f**s. Don’t come home, haha, don’t you dare come home.
Alex: Aight, you’ll see.
Vinnie: Yeah, yeah, haha.
The 2 bullies walk off laughing. We flash back to the present.
Lilly: So that’s why you feel guilty…you think you made them kill Casey.
Alex sniffs, and nods, still crying.
Alex: Those punks were always on me cause they thought I shouldn’ta been with Casey. Cause I cried when they kicked my ass. They called me a f**…
Lilly: What happened after that?
Alex sobs some before turning to her.
Alex: Do I have to…? Do I have to tell you…
Lilly: Only if you want to let this go.
Alex closes his eyes and sniffs.
Alex: Okay…
Cut to 1994.
Casey: Alex, it’s okay, lets just eat and go home.
Alex: I love you, Case.
Casey: Love you too.
Alex: Les jus go home.
Casey: Okay.
We see them walking home "Jeremy" by Pearl Jam plays in the background.
Alex: I’m real sorry bout what happened.
Casey: S’alright. Just bring walk me to the apartment. I’ll go through the alley, to the backstairs, so those creeps don’t catch me with you.
Alex: You sure?
Casey: Yeah, don’ worry.
Casey kisses Alex on the cheek, and they arrive at the alley.
Alex: Uh, be careful.
Casey: Haha, I’m fine.
We see Vinnie and John in the alley, then flash back to the present.
Lilly: Is that all you remember?
Alex: For now I guess.
Lilly: Can you at least tell me you’re certain Vinnie and John killed her?
Alex:…
Lilly: Alex, we need to know so we can arrest them.
Alex: I don’t remember anymore. I thought, like, you’d know what to do from there…oh man, what do I do?
Alex starts shaking and hitting his head on his pillow.
Lilly: Alex, calm down, it’s okay. If you can, tell me what John’s last name was?
Alex: Uh, it’s like Italian or Irish or something…I can’t think of it. You gotta ask Vinnie.
Lilly arrives at Vinnie’s apartment, and knocks. The door opens to present Vinnie.
Vinnie: I thought I told you this whole case was none of your business.
Lilly: Please, just a few questions, and I’ll leave you alone, get out of your hair.
Vinnie: *sigh* Fine, whatever. You wanna come in?
Lilly: Sure.
Lilly enters the apartment, which is extremely clean and orderly.
Lilly: Nice place. Living with anyone?
Vinnie: Look, just ask what you wanna ask and get out.
Lilly: Okay, have it your way. Do you remember a John? Perhaps you were friends back in the early 90’s?
Vinnie: Oh, d**n, John…haven’t talked to him in like 5 years.
Lilly: He ever tell you his last name?
Vinnie: Course, we were best friends. Patelli.
Lilly: Okay, so which one of you can give me an alibi as to where you were the night of Casey’s murder?
Vinnie appears angry, and flashes to a teenager.
Vinnie: Okay, now you can get out. I swear, you pigs never leave us alone…
Vinnie flashes back to the present.
Vinnie: Please just leave me out of this.
Lilly: Okay, well then I guess I’ll have to find a confession in John. I mean, an alibi. Lilly smirks and walks out.
Back at the station, Lilly is talking to Vera.
Lilly: We’ve almost got the 2 kids, we just need a confession.
Vera: Why not just pull em’ in? I’ll talk to them, you just watch.
Lilly: Well we might have to make a home pickup, they sure aren’t coming here.
We cut to Vera and Rush at Vinnie’s house. They knock, and both John and Vinnie are at Vinnie’s home. We see them as teenagers, then grown men.
Vinnie: Oh god, not you again. And who’s this gordo hombre?!
Lilly: This is Detective Vera, and I’d watch what I said if I were a murder suspect too.
John: Was’ going on, Vin?
Vinnie: This puta thinks I killed Casey.
Lilly: John Patelli? What are you doing with Vinnie after all these years? A tearful reunion.
Vera: Seems like they had to talk about times past eh? Maybe fabricating an alibi? Planning how to fly town? What were you 2 lovebirds up to?
John: Nutin. Get the hell out.
Vera: Maybe we don’t wanna. We’re taking you both in for interrogating, how’s that?
Vinnie: You got no grounds, you can’t touch us.
Lilly: We got plenty of grounds. Remember Alex? Most recent vocation the local asylum?
Vinnie: That little f*g deserved to be put away.
Lilly: Cause he cried when you beat on him?
Vinnie sighs heavily and motions John to go with Vera and Rush.
At the interrogation room, John and Vinnie are talking amongst each other, while Lilly and Vera watch from the viewing area.
Vera: Birds of a feather, huh?
Lilly: We’ve almost got em. Just have to tug a bit more. Alex ain’t telling much else, this is all we have left. I can smell justice.
Lilly smirks at Vera and leaves the room and enters the interrogation room.
Lilly: Gentleman, I think you know why you’re here. Do you want to make this difficult? Wait – I’ll bite. What were you two "best buds" doing the night of Casey’s murder?
John: We were at Vin’s house.
Lilly: Can you prove it?
Vinnie: We both know we were at my house. What’s the proof?
Lilly: Hmmm…well maybe the fact that you 2 are probably, no, wait, definitely lying. I gave you a chance to tell me the truth. Now I guess I have to get it myself? Okay. Believe it or not, there was on witness to your alleged crime. Guess who?
Vinnie and John look at each other momentarily. John speaks up after a second.
John: I know.
Vinnie looks at John with a surprised look.
Vinnie: John, what the—you mean you know we were gonna be caught?
John: I saw Alex watching us that night.
Vinnie: Shut up, man!
Lilly: John, what happened that night?
John sighs.
John: I think we gotta finally break the promise Vinnie. I think it’s time we stopped.
Vinnie: John, please, don’t do this to me man.
They flash to teenagers.
Vinnie: We’re like brothers…please, don’t do this.
John: I gotta.
John hugs Vinnie, then they flash back to adults.
John: I’ll tell you what happened that night.
We flash back to the alley, 1994. Casey enters the alley, and John and Vinnie walk out and block her way.
John: Wassup, Casey-Case?
Vinnie: Enjoy your date with flower-power up there? Hope you did.
Casey: Please just leave me alone, I’m trying to go home, I don’t want no trouble.
Vinnie: Ha-ha, little girl don’t want no trouble.
John: Come on Casey, we won’t hurt ya, we just wanna have a little fun.
We hear Korn’s "Helmet in the Bush" again, playing faintly on Alex’s radio.
Vinnie: Come here, baby!
Vinnie grabs Casey by the shoulders, then she tries to pull away, struggling.
Casey: Get the hell off!!
The camera pans backward, showing both the alley and the window. At this point, Alex looks through the window, worried. We see the scene bleach up to a blinding white aura around all.* John looks up to meet eyes with Alex.
We flash to the present.
John: And just at that moment…I swear on my mother’s eyes…everything…the sky…Vin and Case…Alex…myself too…was frozen. Everything stopped. All stopped up for that second. I thought "What the hell am I doing." I looked away from the kid…that’s when Vin shoved a gun into my hands.
Vin: God, John, don’t you think she’s heard enough?!
John: No! She gotta hear it all, Vin. It’s killing me-
Vin: I’ll be killing you! Shut up!
John: I GOTTA TELL THE STORY!
Lilly: Stop it! Vinnie…let John finish.
Vinnie: D**n it, no!
Vinnie grabs John by the neck, and Vera busts in and wrestles Vinnie off John.
Dt.Vera: You wanna try something smart like that again? Sit down, Scarface.
Vinnie sits down, a solemn look on his face.
Vinnie: Tell it, John.
John: Vinnie gave me the gun…
We return to 1994.
Vinnie: Shoot her, John!
John hesitates.
Vinnie: Do it! Now!
John holds the gun up, turns his head away, and fires once. Vinnie lets Casey drop, and they run off. We pan up to Alex looking through the window again, then we flash back to the present. "Everybody Hurts" by R.E.M. starts gently in the background, and the slow motion sets in. John and Vinnie get up, and Vera cuffs them. For a moment, they’re teens again, then present adults. Nothing but the song plays now. We see Lilly enter Alex’s asylum cell, he’s lying on his bed. Lilly says something, and Alex gets up, a stunned look on his face. He hugs Lilly, and they walk out. We cut to past Lucia, holding a picture of her and Casey. Flashing to her present self, she smiles and kisses the picture. Alex and Lilly are back at the alley. Lilly stays in the alley, and Alex walks up the fire escape, until he’s looking down to the alley. He rests his arms on the railing, and puts his head down. He flashes to young Alex, and looks down into the alley. Casey looks up at him and waves. He waves back, and then Lilly brings him to his escort, and she walks through to alley. We fade to black.

* The bleached aura is an effect sometimes used on Cold Case during crucial parts of flashbacks. I didn’t know how to describe it elseways
