Title: Nie Ma To Jak Upiæ Siê/Best Way To Get Drunk
She was stoned like she'd never been before. So tired and so drunk at the same time. She had fallen asleep right on my shoulder when we were all sitting next to the bar counter and celebrating the end of the Bubbley's case. Jeffries and I were smoking a cigar when I felt her head leaning gently on my arm. I turned my head and with a big surprise I saw her sleeping, exhausted by the recent events. She was being very petulant last time, had gotten nervous, practicaly without any good reason and
attacked potential suspects. It had made me anxious about her psyche that I still hadn't worked out. Jeffries had told me several days ago that she had yelled at the mother of these murdered boys and come out the interrogation room banging the door behind her. Stillman had told her to go home then.
I had watched her when they were standing with the boss on a balcony. Lilly had seemed to be very dejected. I hadn't known what to do, so I just went home. I acted like a cowardly fool, and a complete idiot.
She needs my help though!
I looked for a moment at her relaxed features. Her face was pale, no emotions. I haven't seen her like this before. There was always something that was telling me how she felt, joy or sorrow but then... nothing.
I brushed a strand of her hair aside, she tried to wake up but didn't, and was dead to the world.
"Boss" - I chatted up pointing at Lilly. "I'll take her home."
Stillman walked us round and looked at my partner. He was smiling while helping me dress Lilly in her own coat.
She was like a doll, a marionette in our hands. We were embarrassed, because we did not know how to touch her, in a way that would not hurt her accidentally.
She was so tiny, fragile, beautiful...
Beautiful...
Yes, I noticed how beautiful she was. Why didn't I see it before? What a nit I was. A dork!
I took her and lifted up. She was light like a feather.
Lil was sleeping quietly muttering some things every now and then. I couldn't understand anything, she was probably too drunk to say any reasonalbe and clear sentence.
Stillman helped me to put Lilly in my car. I thanked him and made the way to my apartment. I had no idea of what her reaction would be the next day, but I would surely not feel comfortably with staying at her place.
On the way, every single time we stopped, I gazed at her delicate posture. She was sleeping like a child. I smiled to myself when I was taking her out of the car.
I laid her gently on my bed and took off her coat and shoes. I covered her up with a quilt, then left the room. There was a couch waiting for me in a sitting-room. It was hard to believe for me that I had her here, in the next room, sleeping like an angel after a big dose of alcohol.
Certainly I did not even think of abusing her. No... I couldn't. Couldn't hurt her.
I got up and stood in the door to the bed-room. She looked like a gift from God sent to this world to prove that you can be happy in spite of all the bad things that happened to you. Lilly was the best proof for me. I smiled again. My eyes examined every detail of her face, memorized her shape, color, smile and relaxation. I didn't mind the smell of Scotch with soda surrounding her at that moment. I have never seen her drunk, never. That situation was my first time. Apparently, she couldn't
drink much.
I woke up in the morning hearing the groan of disgust. It was coming from my bedroom. My back hurt because the couch was so uncomfortable. Before I went to the next room, I had prepared an aspirin for Lil.
"Good morning, drunkard." I smiled at her showing all of my teeth.
She was lying, pale, leaning on the pillows, that she had somehow managed to put one on the other.
"My head..." - she moaned taking the aspiring and glass of water from me - "Looks like it was too much..."
I thought - Oh, yeah, Lil, too much.
"I had to bring you here." I said and sat on the bed next to her.
She looked terrible. Smeared make-up, her hair sticking in many directions, paler than usually, her eyes squinted...
"I hope I did nothing... Eee... Where am I?"
I responded: "At my place. Don't worry, we had caught you and brought here before anyone in the bar saw anything." - I smiled again and adjusted the pillows under her head that I had to support for that moment.
"We is who exactly?" she asked, making a face at this question.
"I and Stillman. It wasn't easy though, believe me. You become very loquacious when you get drunk."
She sent me a smile and her mouth bent again. She felt sick, I saw.
"Thanks, but I think I should get back home, to the girls." - she tried to sit on the bed, but it was a bad idea. I helped her lie back and said:
"If I were you, I'd wait some time. Otherwise you will bring it all up."
"Right..." she closed her eyes and tried to smile - "I am too sly to bring up everything I managed to drink yesterday."
I smiled to myself, took the glass and came back to the kitchen to make a strong tea, with much lemon juice. I knew what the hangover meant. I had one not so long ago and still felt sick when I thought of that experience. Well, at least I could get out of bed on my owna nd she could not. Although there was nothing funny at all, I laughed again at the thought of Lil getting up that was playing in my head. Surely it would a be horrific view, but I imagined her disheveled, her hair-do wide and make-up
(a'la an old, cruel witch) taken from the fairy tales I used to watch when I was a child.
I infused the tea and took it to Lilly. She successed to sit on the bed, her head still leaning to the side. This time she leant on the wall. She looked comical. What I imagined about her was not far from the reality. The only difference was her hair - it wasn't jutting that much. What a pity...
I gave her the tea with a broad smile.
"Why are you baring your teeth? - she asked bantering with me.
"Because of you" - I answered with even broader grin on my face - "You look nasty".
"Jerk" - she smiled - "You're not looking better, man."
"You wanna see a mirror?"
"No, thanks. My mood and your smile is enough for me."
"Oh, you like my smile then?
"Yeah, sure... I prefer my girls smiling at me, bozo.
I loved her smiling as much as I could. Lilly could do everything by this amazing phenomenon. It always made me really happy. I enjoyed smile, every one of them, since there were not many of them.
"Make sure your pillows don't fall down, girl." - I adjusted the pyramid of pillows behind her back. - "And then what... Would not be good."
"Thank you, you're dear."
I was speechless. My heart stopped; my jaw went down, and my ears wanted to make sure if I did not misunderstand what she just said.
Did she say that I was dear?
"I'm sorry." - She spoke again. This time her voice was serious.
"There is nothing to be sorry for."- I said - " You should rest until I drive you home."
"I'm sorry for what I said. Just... noone ever cared about me like this. I shouldn't have said that. I'm so stupid..." - she looked down staring blindly at the mug in her hands.
"It's okay, Lil. Those words were... a serious compliment for me." - I stroked her cheek.
Lilly looked straight in my eyes. A while passed and our lips met in a kiss.
This is the end of our loneliness - I thought. It's time for love, the real love.
The End
EWKA! THANKS!
