"Frozen"
A Cold Case fanfic by Falling
*November 14, 1994*
A boy dressed in black is lying on his bed, Korn’s "Helmet in the Bush" plays in the background. No other sound is present. Suddenly a confused look is on the boy’s face. He sits up and looks out his bedside window. A teenage girl appears to be struggling with 2 young men. The boy hesitates for a few moments, before turning to his phone. He dials 911, the music intensifying, before a gunshot explodes. A close up shot of the bottom of the phone is shown, followed by the phone falling from the boy’s hand in slow motion, bungeeing down, then up in the same slowed tone. It cuts to the alley, the girl lying dead, shot in the heart, with the 2 teens running off. Cut to the boy looking through the window one last time, before he hangs up the phone, lies down and closes his eyes. We see the girl in the alley again, at different angles, before we cut to the boy, a tear rolling down his face.
*Present Day*
Det.Vera: So Lil, any plans for this weekend?
Lilly: Not in particular…mom’s still sick, and sis hasn’t called, the usual.
The two enter the police station.
Lt.Stillman: Rush, I got a guy for you, check your office.
Lilly: Confession, witness…?
Lt.Stillman: See for yourself…I might be careful though.
Lilly: How comforting. *smirks, walks to office.*
She opens the door, and the boy from 1994 is looking up at her from a chair, who then flashes to a young man wearing a black sweater and jeans.
Young Man: I have to…uh, my name is Alex…Alex Malvera. I have to tell you something I saw.
Lilly: Nice to meet you Alex, Lilly Rush. What do you know?
Alex: I witnessed…I saw a crime back in 1994. It sounded pretty bad.
Lilly: Sounded?
Alex: I only saw some of it. The rest I heard.
Lilly: Well what did you see?
Alex: I saw 2 guys…and a girl. They were fighting. I tried to call the police, but then I heard a shot. So I stopped…
Lilly: Why didn’t you just call back after the shock wore off?
Alex: I went to sleep…then I forgot.
Lilly: Interesting…what brings it back from the memory banks now?
Alex: Electricity…they shocked me in my hospital…then I remembered. I asked for permission to come here, and there’s some guards outside. They’ll bring me to the hospital when I’m done.
Lilly: Obviously. Thank you for the help, Alex. Would you mind telling me where this happened?
Alex: Uh…my old apartment…67…Rickman Avenue. The alley. My bedroom window was facing it.
Lilly: We’ll check it out.
Scotty Valens and Lilly are going through Cold files when they find the case Alex was describing.
Lilly: Ah-ha, here it is.
Valens: What’s the name?
Lilly: Casey Markson. Assaulted, shot in a back ally.
Valens: Assaulted?
Lilly: Roughed up, but no rape. Seems like the feds were clueless.
Valens: What was the holdup on this anyway?
Lilly: The only witness just came forward yesterday.
Valens: How do we know this was the only witness?
Lilly: Well, it seems that he’s the only witness that cared.
Valens: Yeah, cared enough to wait 9 years.
Lilly: It left him disturbed, electroshock only just brought it back. Give him some credit, it’s still a lead, right?
Valens: Yeah, yeah…
Rush and Valens walk through Alex’s old neighborhood, clean buildings flashing to dirty apartments, and walking families flashing to urban gangs.
Lilly: Looks like times have changed.
Valens: This could be my neighborhood…
Lilly: Alex mentioned something about a neighbor…maybe she knows something.
The 2 go up Alex’s apartment stairs, and knock on door 3E. A middle-aged Hispanic woman answers the door.
Woman: Can I help you?
Lilly: Lilly Rush, this is Scotty Valens, homicide.
Woman: Is this about Casey?
Lilly: Familiar with her?
Woman: I was her Godmother.
Lilly: I’m sorry.
Woman: It’s okay…I’ll tell you anything you might need to know.
Lilly: How about your name, for starters.
Woman: Lucia Markson.
Lilly: Alright Lucia, what do you know about Casey?
Lucia: I remember the night of her murder…she called me. She told me she would be meeting Alex, she would be out late.
Lilly: Wait…she knew Alex?
Lucia: She was his boyfriend. "Honey" she called it.
Lilly: Alex didn’t mention that.
Lucia: It was Alex that told you about her? He’s been in asylum, no?
Lilly: He was escorted, apparently.
Lucia: Last I hear, he was in for breakdown… he called me a few times after de murder…very upset.
Lilly: Well why wouldn’t he be…after all, Casey was his girlfriend. Thank you for your help, Lucia.
Lucia: Of course.
Cut to Lilly, talking to Lt.Jeffries
Lilly: Seems that Alex is telling more than he knows. Casey was Alex’s girlfriend way back when.
Jeffries: Why not pay Mr. Malvera a visit in his home turf? Elsley Mental Institution, way downtown.
Cut to Elsley, Lilly entering.
Lilly: Excuse me, can I visit a Mr. Alex Malvera?
Clerk: What’s the nature of your visit?
Lilly: Solving a murder.
Cut to Lilly at Alex’s cell.
Lilly: Alex?
Alex: It’s you…hi.
Lilly: Alex, do you remember who the victim was?
Alex: She was a girl.
Lilly: She also happened to be your "honey".
Cuts to Alex as a boy, looking down, then up, worried. Flash to grown Alex.
Alex: I-I-I-I don’t remember that.
Lilly: What were you doing with Casey the night she died?
Alex: Is Casey her name?
Lilly: Alex…she was your girlfriend. You have to remember.
Alex: I…I…maybe I know…*sigh* oohhhh…my head…
Alex puts his hands on his ears and squeezes his eyes.
Alex: I…I remember now…nnhhh…
Flashback to 1994.
Casey and Alex are in Alex’s room. Casey’s in a chair, Alex on his bed. The room is covered in posters, and "Heart Shaped Box" by Nirvana plays while Casey and Alex talk.
Alex: Case, you did that crappy homework last night?
Casey: Ya, and I’m loving this album.
Alex: Really.
Casey: What about those 2 junkie creeps that bug you all the time? You do anything bout that yet?
Alex: Nah, they’re not really so bad.
Casey: Yo…you wanna like, make out or something?
Alex: Hah, I don’t know.
Casey gets up and sits on Alex’s bed, when 2 teens start yelling from down in the alley.
Casey: Ah crap, is that them?
Alex: I guess.
Alex opens the window and yells back down at them.
Alex: Why don’t you 2 go neck or something, leave us alone! God! I mean, don’t you have anything better to do?
One of the young men gives Alex the finger, and they laugh and walk off.
Casey: Gah, freaking butts.
Flashes to present.
Lilly: 2 guys? Do you remember their names?
Alex: N-no…I don’t remember much else…I’m starting to forget most of it.
Lilly: D**n…thanks for the help, anyway.
Alex: Yeah…welcome.
Lilly returns to Lucia Markson’s apartment.
Lilly: Hi Lucia, may I come in?
Lucia: You want to talk more about Casey?
Lilly: I have a few questions, is all.
Lucia: Okay…
Lilly: Did you ever hear about 2 teenagers that had ever harassed Casey or Alex?
Lucia: I hear them complaining about them a few times.
Lilly: Ever catch any names?
Lucia: Not really…mostly just insults. You could ask around the building, someone must know.
Lilly: Anyone in particular?
Lucia: Maybe the Juarez’s across de street…6B.
Lilly knocks on the apartment door. One of the teenagers opens the door, flashing to a man in his late 20’s.
Man: Hello?
Lilly: Lilly Rush, homicide. I’m investigating the murder of Casey Markson.
Man: I don’t know anything about that, I don’t think I can help you.
Lilly: Are you sure? I don’t know anyone unaware of a murder that happened 6 floors under them. Don’t get out a lot?
Man: I don’t have to answer these questions.
Lilly: Just 2. What’s your name and what were you doing the night of Casey’s murder? Just hangin’ out?
Man: Vincent Kellench, and I think you should mind your own d**n business.
Vincent closes the door and locks it. Lilly walks off.
Cut to Elsley Asylum.
Lilly: Alex, do you remember a Vincent Kellench? Maybe you 2 shared words?
Alex: I don’t know who that is. I told you…I don’t remember much…just that me and Casey went out that night…
Lilly: Alex…you came to me. You told me what you knew. I assumed you wanted this case solved, and now I’m having my doubts. You have to help me if we’re going to find Casey’s killer.
Alex: Killers.
Lilly: Excuse me?
Alex: Killers. She was killed by 2 teenagers. If you give me a little bit…I could maybe remember some more of that night. Just please give me some time.
Lilly: I’ve already angry one suspect. Who’s to say how much time we have.
Alex sighs, and lies down on his asylum bed.
Alex: Just a day, please. To think.
Lilly: One day.
At Lilly’s office, Jeffries comes in, looking nervous.
Det. Jeffries: Lilly, get down to Elsley, Alex just got hospitalized for a suicide attempt…tried strangling himself with sheet fabric…
Lilly arrives at Alex’s hospital room, and enters to find Alex crying and tied down.
Lilly: Alex, what happened?
Alex: I’m sorry…I’m sorry I lied. I don’t think I could take it…I shouldn’t never have remembered Casey…I feel been miserble since I remembered…
Lilly: Why? Do you feel responsible? You have to tell me what happened. I can’t let this happen again.
Lilly approaches Alex and puts her hand on his arm.
Lilly: You have to remember.
Alex: I promised I’d help…I remember that night.
We flash back to 1994.
