Cold Case' Reboot Just Got a Devastating Update

The wave of TV reboots has recently hit a snag as the revival of Cold Case at CBS will not be moving forward, according to a new report from Deadline. The crime procedural, which originally aired from 2003 to 2010, was set for a reboot with CBS in negotiations with Warner Bros. TV. Unfortunately, those plans have now been halted.

Fifteen years after Cold Case wrapped up its seven-season run, series creator Meredith Stiehm was slated to spearhead the reboot. The new version was expected to take place in a fresh location — the Southwest, in contrast to the original’s Philadelphia setting — and would introduce a new squad of detectives dedicated to solving long-unsolved homicides. The revival aimed to build on the legacy of the original series, which was known for its emotional depth, strong performances, and innovative use of period music.

Cold Case Reboot Not Moving Forward at CBS

The trail has gone cold on a Cold Case reboot, which is no longer in the works at CBS.

According to our sister site Deadline, the Eye Network is not moving forward with a new iteration of its 2003-2010 crime procedural, which was reportedly in the works as of this past April.

Reps for CBS and Warner Bros. Television did not immediately respond to TVLine’s request for comment.

The original Cold Case ran for seven seasons on CBS, following a division of the Philadelphia Police Department that specialized in investigating unsolved criminal cases. Kathryn Morris starred as homicide detective Lilly Rush, with Danny Pino, John Finn, Jeremy Ratchford, Thom Barry and Tracie Thoms rounding out the main ensemble.

Details of CBS’ potential reboot were scarce, but the follow-up would have been set in the Southwest instead of Philadelphia, centering on a new group of detectives dedicated to solving cold cases. Original Cold Case creator Meredith Stiehm was reportedly attached to write the script and serve as an executive producer.

The Cold Case reboot at CBS is reportedly not moving forward. The crime procedural aired on CBS for seven seasons from 2003 to 2010, following Detective Lilly Rush (Kathryn Morris), a homicide Detective with the Philadelphia Police Department who specializes in cold cases and, for most of the show, partners with Detective Scotty Valens (Danny Pino). In April 2024, it was reported that the network was in negotiations with Warner Bros. TV for a Cold Case reboot from the show's original creator, Meredith Stiehm.

Now, months after the revival was first reported, the negotiations have reportedly reached a breaking point. According to Deadline, the Cold Case reboot is no longer moving forward at CBS. The report specifies that the project "didn’t make it past the deal-making stage."

Why The Cold Case Reboot Isn't Moving Forward
The Two Sides Were Unable To Reach An Agreement

With Meredith Stiehm returning as the lead writer, the Cold Case reboot was set 15 years after the original series ended and would have followed an all-new team of determined detectives investigating cold cases throughout the Southwest. Unlike the original series, which was based in Philadelphia, the new setting would have offered the opportunity to introduce a fresh cast of characters. Even so, Danny Pino reportedly had informal discussions about reprising his role as Detective Scotty Valens, while there was also a possibility that Kathryn Morris could have appeared in a limited capacity as Detective Lilly Rush.



At the time the Cold Case reboot was initially reported in April 2024​​​​​​​, negotiations between CBS and Warner Bros. TV had already been ongoing for quite some time, and the two sides were still nowhere closer to an agreement. The two sides reportedly faced similar obstacles as when they were negotiating a renewal of East New York in 2023, and CBS requested additional streaming rights. After months of back-and-forth, those negotiations ultimately fell through and now the Cold Case reboot isn't moving forward, likely due to similar issues.



Our Take On The Cold Case Reboot Not Moving Forward
It's Probably For The Best

The Cold Case reboot not moving forward is probably for the best. There is currently an inundation of crime and police procedural shows on network television from NCIS, Law & Order, Criminal Minds, and more. While a Cold Case reboot may have appealed to die-hard fans of the show's original run, it would have unlikely been able to stand out among the crowded competition. Additionally, without the return of Kathryn Morris as Detective Lilly Rush or Danny Pino as Detective Scotty Valen, it's unlikely the Cold Case reboot would have carried much appeal anyway.

Oh, I'm really sorry to hear that the reboot didn't work out. At the end of the day, I probably agree that they can't recreate the lightning in a bottle they had with the original Cold Case. However, it still would have been fun to see the reboot.
