[MAY 1981]
Two young men, Johhnie and George, wearing leather jackets and leather pants stagger out of a bar. They are laughing and holding hands and obviously quite drunk [SEX DWARF by Soft Cell plays in the background] Suddenly George trips over something but regains his balance...
Johnnie: "Man! you are wasted!".... [Starts laughing but stops abruptly when he sees his friend tripped over a human foot sticking out of an alley. A closer look at the dimly lit alley reveals a naked young man lying on the ground. There is blood everywhere.]
Johnnie: "Sh*t! Someone call the cops!"
PRESENT DAY
Vera puts down the phone receiver and walk's over to Lily's desk where she is working.
"Got a lady on the phone with a cold one for you, Rush"
RUSH [picking up phone] "Hello, Lilly Rush, Homicide."
WOMAN "Hello....uh....My name's Barbara Allen.....I read about you in the paper...uh....That you solve old murders."
RUSH "Well, yes, I try to at least."
MRS. ALLEN "Well my son Taylor, back in 1981, he was stabbed to death and they never solved it." (sounds like she may start to cry) "After that my marriage broke up and I never really recovered. I just thought that maybe with all that DNA and stuff they show on TV now you may be able to find out who killed him so I could have some closure."
RUSH: Can you give me some details, ma'am?"
MRS. ALLEN: "Well that's the thing, he was found near a...gay bar....and the cops at the time thought that, well you know, some gay lover killed him, but I tried to tell them my son wasn't gay!"
RUSH: "Well, no offense intended ma'am, but are you sure he would've told you if he was gay? Some people find it hard to tell their parents things like that...."
MRS. ALLEN "No! He always had lots of girlfriends! He was a law student at Temple and had a beautiful fiancee. It just was so sad and doesn't make any sense....."[starts to cry]
RUSH:" Well, Mrs. Alllen, I promise I'll do whatever I can to find your son's killer. I'll give you my pager number....Call me anytime if you're feeling upset and don't give up hope...."
MRS. ALLEN (still crying) "Thank you, that is so kind of you.... "
[Later in the day Rush and Valens are looking through the cold case boxes]
RUSH: "Here it is. Taylor Allen found dead May 19, 1981 naked in an alley near Hot Waves, a known gay bar, cause of death, 16 stab wounds, extensive overkill and genital mutilation. No semen or other signs of sexual assault. A detective Wythe worked on it, seems he assumed it was a crime of passion and not a robbery.... They never found a murder weapon or developed a clear suspect though"
VALENS: "Probably right about motive....you don't stab someone that much unless you really hate them, could have also been a hate crime though or even a serial killer....."
RUSH (nodding and thinking): "Yes well says here he had a fiancee named Susan Belkin, gives several known male associates as well and we'll have to talk to Detective Jerry Wythe,I've heard of him but he's retired now. They say he was good though. We need to interview the mother again and find out if this kid really was into the gay scene. And why don't you look through the files for any cases with similar MOs around the same time to rule out the serial killer angle...."
VALENS (with a bit of a snicker) "OK Boss..."
