I don't follow much of Xena: Warrior Princess anymore. But I was on line yesterday and on my You Tube feed popped up some interesting videos of fans depicting two of the cast as lovers in real life.
Is this an insult or is this endearing? I don't know. I only know how I would feel if I were the target of such a break with reality on the part of fans. First of all, I would find it disrespectful.
This same behavior happened very quickly post Xena series and I remember bringing this up on a WHOOSH board (another Xena Forum) at the time. But these videos I saw yesterday were very recent. 2010 & 2012. Why is it that having a discussion about it would get it wiped off the boards as if the fans making these are being protected? The last I checked we all have free speech. So, I went to post this topic on a Xena forum (Xena Online Community) xena.yuku.com/ and they wiped it off their boards. Not even a notification of why. This behavior of Xena forums doesn't surprise me because it depends who you are in the Xena fandom as to what is allowed to be discussed and what is not allowed. I guess if they ignore it - it will somehow go away? I see not much has changed in the Xena world. But, you know, it is their board and they are entitled to what is or is not posted there and who is posting.
Anyway. I am astounded that in today's world such a thing is permitted and that neither of the actors have addressed this.
Here are the You Tube Videos I saw on line:
LUCY & RENEE ~ FRIENDS WHO BECAME LOVERS
Lucy Lawless ¢¾ Renee O'Connor Please love me
Lucy and Renee: When I Look Into Your Eyes
So one can just slap up a disclaimer that this is fictional? Or not put up any disclaimer?
Honestly, how would you like it if someone out there made videos of you in relationship with others from pictures they have captured from you either in person or all over the Internet? Wouldn't that be just CREEPY? You would be running to an attorney. It would end up on Dr. Phil.
Here is an obvious observation. (in my humble honest opinion) When you have a show where so many fans were invested in desiring these two characters (Xena and Gabrielle) become lovers/wives --- a Mind can't let go of that physical desire to see the two characters fulfill that role within some visual reality. And, so, these videos on You Tube. Is it okay to plaster your desires of someone else out in public? Gee. Let me think.
I have been in the Xena fandom from the onset and I know what was thought and expressed by fans regarding this pairing (Xena & Gabrielle). When the subtext fans didn't get the "outing" the way they dreamed because Mr. Tapert had other ideas for the series, the "outing fans" were crushed and unable to let go. Personally, I believe many fans were rooting for the outing conclusion to the relationship but there were also many fans that had no desire for a lesbian couple in the story line because the series was clearly about a woman warrior with a friendship. And, yes, they were playing many things on the side for laughs. Get over it, already.
In my post I posted yesterday at Xena Online Commuinty (I pulled my account today), I mentioned the series Bad Girls (UK) 1999 and the lesbian story line of Helen and Nikki. It's true, that story line was depicting a genuine meant for lesbian audience relationship in all ways including a happy ending per their series writers. I have yet to see any fan of that series come out with a video depicting the actors: Simone Lahbib and Mandana Jones as lovers in real life. It's unacceptable. I can't imagine it would be tolerated.
I must ask my members here on Look Again: Have you made any fan videos of Kathryn Morris and Danny Pino as lovers in real life or any male actor or female actor who appeared on the show this is now Kathryn Morris' lover/husband/wife in real life. Any videos whatsoever?
Feel free to respond yay or nay. At least here, you can have An observation.
Xena fans, have you made any videos of Kevin Smith and Lucy Lawless as real life husband and wife/lovers? How about Kevin Sorbo and Lucy Lawless?
Just throw the topic under the rug - Xena Fans. Because. Because, it's what you do.
