-Mare Winningham as Celeste Cooper in "The Good Soldier". When it comes to these awards, I've always felt that family of main characters sometimes unfairly overshadow case-related characters. For example, I wasn't sure if Meredith Baxter deserved the "Best Guest Actress" award for season three over the likes of April Grace in "Saving Patrick Bubley" and Meredith Monroe in "A Perfect Day". (This is also the main reason I push for separate awards for guest and recurring actors).

That being said, I couldn't get over what a delight Mare Winningham was as the strong-willed Cooper matriarch in her (regretably) one appearance. As I said in the episode's thread, with the possible exception of Stillman, have we ever seen a character dress down Lilly and give her a dose of reality like that. Her own mother certainly never had the maturity or moral high-ground to do that! At the same time, the smiles on the faces of Lilly, Paul, and Finn at the end of that dinner scene show that she does it with love. One of the biggest losses we got with no season 8, I think, was the chance to see more of her.

-Rachel Miner as Anna Coulson in "Two Weddings". Ah, Louie's blushing bride. Anaa was a young woman who was heartbroken and betrayed that her first husband-to-be was not the guy she thought he was, only to find happiness with a much more unlikely prince. Though we didn't get to see many sides of her outside of one wedding or another, we got the impression of a grounded person who is not only intelligent, but appreciates that attribute in others. As quirky as Louie was, I believed that she could see his positive attributes and love them.

-Daniele Watts as Donalyn Sullivan in "Read Between the Lines".. "Sugar Dawn". Like many real-life foster kids, she had to grow up far quicker than she should have, especially to protect her little sister. Yet she expressed her pain beautifully in her final rap. Bravo to Daniele Watts on that.

-Loretta Devine as Chandra Patterson (2009) in "Soul". "Soul" was one of my favorite of the season for two reasons: 1) The music and 2) Because I was totally off on guessing who the doer would be (I thought it would be Buster). Despite the fact that she was probably the best known of the "present day" actors (a big sign right there), I never suspected this pleasant, churchgoing woman had it in her to give Billy a fatal blow to the head. At same time, like Helena Mattson in "Cargo", you can see her unease if you rewatch the episode. Good on that and on finally letting her remorse show in the final scene.

-Azura Skye as Claire Shepard in "Bullet". I'd recognized her from her role on "Buffy" and another Bruckheimer show "CSI Miami" where she'd had an affair with Horatio Caine's then-married brother and had a kid with him (soapy, I know). I really liked her as this slightly quirky woman who'd flirted with this man in a video store, loved and married him, never believing until she saw for her self how dangerous he was, at which point she turned away from him, likely for good.


Honorable mention:

-the one who's name we shall not say Aldrich as Megan Easton in "Free Love". Who honestly thought we'd see Vera's old flame from "Ravaged", way back in season two, ever again? The minute they see each other again, we see that some fires don't go out completely. The smile on her face at the end as Vera patches up a window her philandering husband broke, gives us some hope that maybe there can be some new beginnings for both of them.

My favorite victim from Season 7. She acted like an adult because she had to grow up fast but you could still see in many ways she was still just a kid. Her final songs not only showed her pain, but the desire to protect her sister as well. Kudos to Daniele

2. Vivian Lynn (1944)............... the one who's name we shall not say Glendening - Wasps
My second favorite victim. The WASPS were truly brave women. They paved the way for women in the military, and for female pilots, both military and civilian. There is no doubt in my mind all of these women knew that and showed great courage against the sexism they faced and the very real threat of dying.
But Vivian showed even greater courage. Where Iris was willing to cover up Edna's death to protect the program,Vivian was determined to get justice for her friend, even if meant the one program at the time that allowed her to fly would be shut down. That is true courage.
And the one who's name we shall not say showed all aspects of Vivian beatifully.

3 -Mare Winningham as Celeste Cooper - The Good Soldier
Like the rest of you, I love Lily. But there have been times (like my favorite cops on other crime shows) where she needs a good talking to. Her avoiding/ignoring her dad and the rest of the family other than her half-brother was one of those times.
As Celeste said and we all know, Lily has had some VERY hard times. But it's still no excuse to ignore attempts to reach out to you. Every point Celeste made was right on. Lily needed to hear the message from someone,and I think she got it, loud and clear,thanks to Mare's performance.
