Made this post on another board..figured I'd bring it here as well....
First of all, let me state the guy who got killed was a scumbag of the highest order. I shed no tears at the fact a rapist is dead. Having said that, I can no longer have any respect for the character of Scotty Valens. Here are my reasons why.
1) What if it was your mother?
I have no idea how I would react if that happened to my mother. But Cold Case has shown what has happened to those who have taken revenge for their loved ones. Other than the brother in Justice, who killed his sister's rapist (and it could be argued that was self-defense),other doers that avenged their loved ones were arrested. The mother in Blackout who killed her own mother to protect her son from being molested, the father of the victim in the two part season finale of season 6 who killed the man who helped cover up his daughter's murder and disposed of her like trash, the stepfather who killed the pedophile who kidnapped his stepson in Revenge were all arrested. Yes the victims were $%#! but the fact remains the doers took justice into their own hands. Will they get hard prison time? I doubt it but they aren't going to be let off the hook either. Saying some crimes are OKAY if it's done to avenge a loved one is a slippery slope. Using that theory, Doherty shouldn't face any charges or firing for covering up the shooting of Wanda Johnson to protect his son.
2) The rapist who killed Scotty's mom was a rapist and Scotty was justified in having him murdered.
Yes, he and several of the victims I mentioned above no doubt have a nice spot in hell reserved for them. But in saying they deserved to be killed, there's a problem with that. Many of the doers on Cold Case thought the killings they did were justified as well. That the victims deserved to die. How can you tell them they were wrong if you've done a murder yourself? You can't. And yes, hiring someone to do a murder is viewed in all 50 states as murder or conspiracy to commit murder. You don't get brownie points for getting someone else to do your dirty work, as the episodes Start-Up,Spiders and Lotto Fever all showed.
3)Scotty didn't directly say he wanted the guy dead.
Conviction wise, maybe he didn't. He didn't come right out and say he wanted the guy murdered. But make no mistake, he wasn't visiting his buddy to talk about the good old days. He was putting out a hit, and both Scotty and his buddy both knew damn well what he was talking about and what he wanted done.
These are my reasons(I'm sure others have theirs as well). If there's a season 8(keep the fingers crossed big time),it will be very hard to see Scotty questioning or arresting suspects for murder when he committed one himself. And make no mistake,Scotty used his badge to carry out a hit. He is no different than Doherty, the corrupt cop in Chinatown or the gay bashing cops in Forever Blue. They misused their badges to commit crimes. I can't look at him with respect anymore.
