I know the official voting hasn't started yet... but I had to say why I rank Read Between The Lines as my top episode - even over Flashover,Shattered and Two Weddings.
I briefly worked in the foster care system (bless those who truly do care and want to make a difference)and the writer of this episode was 110% dead on in several brutal truths about parts of the foster care system.
Younger cute kids like Meesha with no emotional baggage are the ones most likely to be favored and adopted into loving homes. Ones with emotional problems (can you blame them) from being neglected, abused and having to grow up too fast are ignored and when they get to be Donalyn's age, are often simply passed from home to home until they age out. Many of these homes are simply people who want the $$$ and nothing more.
The worst part (which again this writer nailed) is how many times siblings are seperated because the foster parents only want one and not the other. Not only was Donalyn right about Ken being a pervert but in her final confrontation with Alice, the truth that Alice only cared about and wanted Meesha and while wanting her to go away. It truly is sad and disguisting how many siblings are seperated because the foster parents can't care for an older troubled child, but in many cases like Alice, simply don't want to.
And finally this is one episode (among several others) where I wish there was a follow up with at least one of the characters. One can only imagine how hard it will be for Meesha to learn the horrible truth about her sister's murder. Not only did her sister die trying to protect her but it was at the hands of the woman who adopted her, raised her and whom she calls mom.
