I know this topic has been discussed before, but it's been a while.
What does everyone think of the ghosts, shown in nearly every episode? Do you think they are the real ghosts or detectives / loved ones imagining the person at peace?
I like to think they really are the ghosts: it's a touch of supernatural in an otherwise real world show. I like this theory from Tv tropes:
It's not just a metaphor - the team sees dead people.
Essentially, it's a mild ability that tells them they have the right solution. They can also temporarily give it to others close to the victim to grant some comfort and closure. Why else would they continue to do the job that most of the department considers scut work?
My evidence:
The ghosts appear to say 'thank you' to the detectives for saving a case. They seem to appear to a loved one when it will help the loved one (e.g. the loved one is feeling guilty or didn't get a proper goodbye).
I like the idea of them being real ghosts, to enable people to heal. I like the mixture of detectives and loved ones seeing the ghosts. Sometimes it seems the loved one needs some help and the ghost gives them closure, other times it's nice for the detectives to be thanked.

My evidence:
- The first time any of the detectives see a ghost, they look a bit shocked. They have a confused look on their face, instead of a contemplative look like they would if it was just their imagination.
- Most of the ghosts seem to walk away as they fade- walking into the light, maybe?
- The ghosts fade away, like ghosts are meant to
