10 Things Not To Buy 2010Land phones are gong to be obsolete? How to sift thru the quagmire and figure out what cell phones and plans are the cheapest and best plan. As far a newspapers our town has had this problem for the last two years as well. Let's face it we really are wasting so much paper for the newspaper. I took a 13 gallon bag of paper out for recycle and it was just 4 day's work of newspapers and magazines I had gotten in the mail in one week. So wasteful.

I agree with some, but not others, and in some cases, it just matters that you buy smart.
DVDs I won't stop buying until they don't make them anymore, same with CDs, but only of the ones that are really important to me. Movies that I love, artists that I love and will listen to the whole CD. If you want to watch a movie once, get Netflix. $9 a month gets you unlimited 1-at-a-time rentals, and you can discover which movies you really like. If you love a movie, then buy it. Similarly with songs, if you want just a single, buy it on Amazon. If you want the whole CD, buy the real thing. You can always rip a copy to your PC!
Landline service I can agree with, seeing that more and more people are getting cell phones. If you're getting a cell phone that you intend for everyday usage, then dump the landline. If it's just for emergencies, or if you have someone else at home that doesn't use a cell phone, then obviously keep it. But, with the cheaper "pay as you go" plans, that will be the standard before long.
External hard drives I wholly disagree with. I don't trust the online services to keep my stuff private, and to have it when I want it and in perfect condition. Plus, you're paying at minimum a yearly fee that you could pay just once, and have your files in your possession all the time.
The smart phones and compact digital cameras I also disagree with, to an extent. If you spend a little money and get a good one, these two things can be very useful. Smartphones like the Blackberry & iPhone are always going to be worth it, and some new ones like the HTC and my phone, the Samsung Omnia, work delightfully. Same with the digital cameras; if you spend a little more, you'll get a quality product. If you spend $10, then you get what you pay for. The small cameras are great for carrying around on vacation when you just don't want to lug that few extra pounds around, and are great for the average user.
Newspapers, I'm on the fence. On one hand, it would definitely be more environmentally conscious to print online, but part of me will always want to hold something in my hand to read it, same with books. Obviously, if it's the same content, at the end of the day it isn't a huge deal, but I'd always rather do my sudoku in my hands rather than on a computer.
The last three on the list, new college textbooks, gas guzzling cars, and inefficient homes/appliances seem like a no brainer. New college books are never worth it when you can get the same book that your professor won't use for a whole lot cheaper used. They are even offering book rentals now, perfect for those books that you won't read and won't want to keep anyway. Similarly, who wants a car that squanders gas, or a house that has horrible bills. Time to go green.

I don't agree with the DVDs, CDs, or EHDs. When was the last time I bought a CD? Oh please, I usually buy up to 4-6 a month. DVDs? I just bought 2 today. EHD? I'm like TruBlu, I don't trust those online services, and I don't want to pay $5-$20 per month for a service that probably wouldn't even hold everything I have.

I keep a landline solely for the fact if something happens to my cell phone, I need a way to keep in touch with everyone.

Im with Trublu. There are things that I agree with and things I don't.
The CD's, and DVD's I will buy until they are gone. I will only buy a album unless I know that I am going to like all of the songs, if not I just buy it online. And DVD's I only buy the ones I have seen and really enjoyed and are worthy of a second showing.
I don't trust anything that is online. I would rather just keep it safe and made double copies of things I can instead of paying every month for something that I don't know alot about.
I am iffy with the landline portion, just lets face it I am a teenager the last time I actually used the landline was maybe thanksgiving... But if like my parents they don't mesh well with Cellphone technology then keep it around. Plus the fact that there are Smartphones, like BlackBerry and Iphone people don't really need anything else because they do everything for you (hence why I got the new Blackberry)
The newspaper thing is something that drives me crazy Just read the thing online! I don't need 50 pounds of paper to carry to the side of the road every week when I don't even read all the parts in it.
With the cars and gas idea. I agree I am even thinking of selling one of my two vehicals to buy a prius, something more fuel efficient.

One thing I'll say about newspapers, my family keeps them because they make great a great fire starter for our wood stove.
