Nick came to the observation carrying a stack of files. Put them on the table and turned to see Lilly sitting down on the floor.
“Oh, hey. Didn’t know you’re here. We got interview goin’. Wanna stay and watch?”
She got up wiping the tears away. “No. Got other things to do.”
“Rush?” Vera tried to stop her knowing that something was off but she went out to the hall.

“Miller. Can you go to women bathroom for a sec?” Nick approached Kat in the break room.
“What?” she looked at him puzzled.
“Just go to the bathroom.”
“I don’t have time for your stupid jokes, Vera. Go bother someone else.”
Nick grabbed her by the elbow. “Just go there.”
Kat studied his expression and detected worry in his eyes. Whatever was going on, it was serious.

Kat slowly opened bathroom door and quietly entered but didn’t notice anyone inside. She was ready to exit when she heard soft sobs from one of the stalls.
“Rush?”
It startled the blond detective “Be right out. Something happened?”
“I should be the one askin’ you.” Lilly looked up and saw Kat leaning over the stall’s wall.
“I’m fine, Miller.” Blond exited the stall and in front of the mirror started wiping running mascara of her face.
“How long have we known each other?”
Lil knew where that conversation is heading and wanted to run away from it, wanted to get out…but somehow she stayed and listened. Kat saw nervousness in her fellow detective but if she wanted Lil to open up now was probably the only chance she will ever get.
“I don’t have any friends outside of this place. God knows it’s not possible to talk to those guys we work with. They’re good drinkin’ buddies but that’s it. Seams like you have the same problem and, being the only two females in homicide, what do you say we-“
“I slept with Valens.” Lilly interrupted knowing Kat was right. They needed each other’s support and right now Lil needed to talk to someone, anyone.
Kat raised her eyebrow. “Was he any good?”
“Miller!”
“What? Girl has a right to know.” By the look on Lil’s face Kat knew there is more to the story. “You fell in love with him.” More of a statement than a question.
Lilly slightly nodded. “Don’t tell anyo-“
“It’s between you and me, Lil.”
“Don’t tell anyone what I’m about to say. When our flight got cancelled, we went out and got drunk.” Lil took a deep breath. “Before we ended up in bed we did something even crazier.” She looked down ashamed.
“What could you have done that-Oh.” Kat’s eyes widened. “So is it still Rush or do you prefer being called Valens now?” she tried to keep a straight face but failed miserably.
“I know I did a horrible mistake. You don’t have to mock me. I just don’t know what to do now…” Blonde started sobbing again.
“Lilly, you said you fell in love. It’s a mistake alright, but sometimes it’s a good one. A great one.” Kat moved closer and did something that felt awkward at the beginning but was exactly what Lil needed – she hugged her friend trying to calm her down. “How Valens feels about what you did in Vegas?”
Lil chuckled. “Same as me, but…” She suddenly wasn’t able to say another word.
“That ‘but’ is the reason you’re here crying? Instead of being out there with him?”
Blond nodded. “I came up with the annulment and we got into fight over it. I didn’t know then that he feels the same. And now he won’t talk to me. Won’t let me explain.”
“Give him some time to calm down?”
“He already called a lawyer. Now wants to cancel it and forget about it and…” Lil got silent again.
“And you don’t want that to happen. I get it. Lil, when was the last time you slept?” Kat looked at Lil’s red eyes. When blond looked away Miller knew her fellow detective hasn’t been in bed in a long time. “Go home and rest. I’ll tell boss you caught flu. Scotty won’t do anything in one day and you look very tired.”
Lil shook her head. “I can’t…I don’t want to sit at home. Work always helped me. That’s what I need to do. Work.”
Kat nodded knowing there is no way she’ll convince Lil to take a day off. “There are some files to pick up at court for our case. Why don’t you pick them up? On your way there go home, take shower and change coz you kinda look like crap.”
Lilly chuckled. “Thanks, Miller.”
“I just say it how I see it.”
“I mean…for everything, thanks.” They exchanged smiles and Kat accompanied Lil to the elevators giving an evil eye to anyone who gave Lilly a strange look. The moment door closed Kat turned and swiftly went to the office. She was on the mission and couldn’t waste any time since Lil wasn’t going to be gone for long.

Somehow Kat-Scotty conversation was the hardest part of this story to write...interesting

Kat sat down by her desk observing Scotty. She saw his nervousness, something was bothering him and now Kat knew exactly what it was but Valens was secretive. Making him talk about personal things was a challenge always and Kat needed to be cautious but also direct.
“Hey, Valens,” her voice casual.
“Miller.” Scotty didn’t raise his head but after a minute felt uncomfortable. He looked up to discover Kat looking at him. “Something goin’ on?”
Miller smirked. “You tell me.”
He smiled and went back to files he was working on. “Nah. Everything’s fine.” Could she know? Did Lil tell her anything? Nah, not possible. Lilly is very private person, she wouldn’t just go and talk to Miller…or would she?
Kat got up and sat down by Scotty’s desk leaning on it.
“Tell me Valens, have you ever did something that you knew is a mistake but you did it anyway?”
His heart started racing, palms sweating. Calm down, fool. She ain’t talkin’ bout you. Make sure she ain’t talking bout you. “Then tell Bell it was a mistake.”
“I did but I didn’t want to say it.”
“Don’t get it, Miller. Was it a mistake or not then? And why are you talkin’ to me bout it?”
“Coz you’re the only normal guy here and I need guy’s advice. And it was but I’m happy we made it.”
Scotty eyed her. Maybe she really ain’t talking bout Lil and you. “Did you tell him you’re ok with it?”
“Told him we have to correct it.”
“Why?”
“Thought that’s what he wanted.”
“Go back. Tell him you’re fine with it.”
“Nah. Bell’s like you. Won’t listen.”
“Bell’s ain’t like me. He…” Crap! Scotty looked at Kat, who was now smiling satisfied with how the conversation went. “You know?”
“Yup.”
“Bout me and…”
“Yup.”
“Nah.” Scotty squinted his eyes not sure whether to believe her or not. “You’re bluffin. No way can you know.”
“Girl’s a mess, Valens. She opened up to me. To me! Think how much she’s hurting if she did that.”
“She’s a mess?” Scotty raised his voice in disbelieve. “I’m a mess! She-” Scotty looked around the office, moved closer to Kat and continued now whispering. “Why she’s a mess? ‘Cause she’s worried someone’s gonna find out? It’s gonna ruin her? Tell her not to worry bout that. I’ll just need one signature from her and our mistake will be annulled by Friday. And no one will ever know. Well, ‘cept you.”
“Exactly how did you make a detective?”
Scotty looked at her confused. “What do ya mean?”
“Think, Valens. Think back to what I said.” Kat couldn’t stop smiling observing him while he struggled to recall their conversation.
Suddenly his eyes brighten and grin appeared on his face. “You did say she…Right? You did say that she’s ok with it.”
Miller chuckled. “Yeah. More than ok.”
Scotty got up and frantically looked around.
“Hey, lover boy, she ain’t here. Court. But she’ll be back soon so just wait for her. And you can’t go and tell her ‘Kat told me’ ‘cause she won’t tell me anything ever again. Not that I like personal drama but that girl needs someone who’ll listen. Especially now since she has a husband.” Kat chuckled when Scotty shot her a look. “That was supposed to scare me, Valens?”
“You’re right.” Scotty sat back down. “She won’t listen to me. I started the fight…Twice already. What should I do?”
“Oh, don’t expect me to help. I already said a lot more than I should. And if you’re thinking ‘bout flowers from a secret admirer…”
Scotty looked at her surprised she could read his mind.
“…don’t! That will mess with her head more and you don’t want that.”
Kat went back to her desk leaving Scotty with his thought. He needed to find a way to be alone with Lilly so if things got out of hands no one would hear them yelling. And a place she couldn’t run out from to easily.
“You said court?” he turned to Miller.
“Yeah, so you don’t have much time. Sorry.”
He smiled while putting on his jacket. “Nah. That’s perfect.” With that Scotty left the office.

Scotty was back at the office before Lilly. By the look on his face something bad happened while he was out. On his way to the desk he bumped into a chair and then Kat’s desk, both times cursing in Spanish loudly. Kat looked at him and almost said some remark but when she saw anger in his eyes she backed down. Valens was clearly mad as hell. He threw his jacket over the seat and cursed again when it slid right off. This time he cursed very loudly and in English making everyone in the bullpen turn their attention to him. Even Stillman was surprised with Scotty’s burst of anger.
“What?” Scotty looked around at fellow officers making them go back to work.
“Did you talk to Rush?” Kat said calmly.
“I don’t wanna talk with you.” He hissed. Kat murmured something and Scotty was about to respond when Stillman grabbed his arm.
“Let’s talk.”
“I don’t want to, boss.” Younger man tried to break free of the grip but Stillman tighten his hold.
“It wasn’t a suggestion.”

Scotty followed his boss to the balcony and closed the door behind them. Stillman observed the detective carefully. For Scotty silence between them was making him angrier by the second. He clenched his fists tight, trying to hold his anger knowing he can’t punch his boss. Doing that would make him jobless and besides there was no reason to do it. Stillman wasn’t responsible for anything. It was this world that Scotty was angry at, at the way things work in it or rather not work as Scotty would like them to. He was angry at everyone and at the same on one but himself. He was looking around trying to avoid his boss’s drilling eyes.
“Want to hit me? Go ahead. But I will defend myself.” Finally Stillman spoke looking at Scotty’s fists. Scotty was stunned by those words, he turned around for few seconds and then turned back to face his boss.
“Everything’s fine.” Lie written all over Scotty’s face.
“Trouble in paradise?” John said with authoritative and yet strangely caring voice.
“Boss? Don’t get the meaning.”
Stillman chuckled. “Sure you do.” Confusion appeared on Scotty’s face. “It’s a policy to inform a superior when one of his men get’s arrested. Charges might have been dropped, but I still received all the paperwork and talked to arresting officer. Imagine my surprise when he told me what you have told him after you’ve been picked up. Apparently when you’re drunk you’re very talkative.”
“You know about everything, boss?”
Scotty looked down in shame when John nodded.
“Verified it all, too. Was just waiting for you and Rush to tell me officially since you both seamed fine about it after you came back. That is until today. Until I saw Lilly.”
“I messed up. Real bad. Tryin’ to fix it up. Gonna take me longer than expected though. ”
“Better do it soon. If you need anything my doors are always open.”
“I need some lost hours.”
“Take all day off if you need.”
“Nah. I’ll be back later. That’s when I’ll need some more help.”
When Scotty and John finished discussing his plan they returned inside.

When Lilly walked through the door she saw Stillman smile and pat younger detective on the back. Now in clean clothes and redone makeup, she tried to smile. Pretend that everything is ok, but anyone who would look into her eyes would see sadness. She observed two men talking quietly trying not to stare at Scotty but she couldn’t take her eyes off him. She wanted to just walk up to him and feel his lips on hers. Wanted to entangle her hand in his hair and touch his broad shoulders while giving him the most passionate kiss. She closed her eyes and replayed their night together in Vegas. She knew it was stupid what they have done there but if it made her happy she didn’t mind at all. And she was happy for the first time in a long time, she knew what she wanted. It wasn’t like with Kite. Scotty understood that work is important for her, besides something told her that she wouldn’t leave Scotty waiting if someone would show up at her door late at night. It wasn’t like her relationship with Joseph either. If given a choice she would make that decision on the spot and choose Scotty over anyone else, even Ray who knew her so well. She wouldn’t have to walk all nigh because she knew who she wanted to be with. And then morning conversation with Scotty in observation room flashed before her eyes. She tried to hold her tears as she recalled his words. ‘It was your idea to annul…’ It was her idea alright and she regretted saying it, but how could she know back then that Scotty loved her too.
“Let me know when you’ll be ready.” John added before Scotty walked to his desk to grab his jacket. That’s when Lilly opened her eyes hoping Scotty will walk pass her, that he will smile to her and…Scotty walked in opposite direction and all she saw was his back as he left the office. All hope was gone.

“Where did Valens go?” Lilly went over to Kat’s desk.
“What?” Kat looked up and around. “Don’t know. Something with the case maybe. How are you holdin’ up?” Lil smiled knowing well it will not fool her coworker. “Lunch’s comin’ up. Wanna go talk?”
“Maybe.” Lilly sat down by her desk and opened some file.
“Just let me know, ok?”
“Sure.” They exchanged smiles. That was the second time today Lilly knew she has someone to talk to, someone who will listen to her. Somehow that’s what Lil needed. Not the talking part exactly, but just the knowledge that someone will be there for her. Maybe she was building a wall around herself for damn to long? Or maybe Miller just simply jumped over that wall? Knowing Kat’s character and attitude that was very much possible.
“Miller!” Stillman yelled from his office’s door. Both women looked up at boss’s grim face.
“Principal is not happy,” Kat mumbled walking past Lilly.
“Expect a note for your parents.” Kat chuckled hearing Lil’s words before disappearing in Stillman’s office.

Time to reveal Scotty's plan...

It was late afternoon when Scotty returned to work but he didn’t go to the bullpen. He was pacing back and forth in the storage room looking at his watch every couple of seconds. It was just few minutes since he called Stillman but for Scotty it felt like ages. He straightened his suit and tie and sat down by one of the rows of boxes but immediately got up and started walking around again. Checked the cell phone in case Stillman called that something didn’t do as planned. Even though he would hear any call fine Scotty had to check it, maybe just to fill the passing time or maybe to do something with his hands.

Scotty jumped when he heard door open and two female voices getting closer. Taking one of the files from the box he already pulled out from the shelf he sat down and pretended to read it. In his mind he wanted to rehearse his speech one last time, but when he heard Lilly’s voice it was like his mind went blank and his feelings took over. But he couldn’t trust his feelings now, not yet. He needed to think first because last time he met with Lil he yelled at her and she would not be happy to see him now. Oh, if Miller was tellin’ the truth Lilly would be happy, but Lil was great at suppressing her emotions and going with her mind and not heart. He cursed silently knowing that there is no more time to prepare, that his plan is already in motion and if he’s going to screw up this time there will be no other chance to correct it.
“So why boss wants us to fly under the radar with this case?”
“Don’t know. Just said to go down and take a look at it.” Scotty smiled hearing Miller’s casual voice. If something would go wrong it wouldn’t be Miller’s fault. “Crap! Forgot my cell. Be right back, Lil.”
“Let’s just grab the box and head upstairs.”
“Uhmm, what part of fly under the radar didn’t you understand, Lil?” Miller chuckled but then her voice turned caring. “Sorry, Lil. You got a lot on your plate. Shouldn’t-“
“That’s fine, Kat. I’ll find the box and wait for you.”
Stillman and Miller did great. Now it’s your time not to mess it up, Valens. Scotty straightened his tie last one time hearing one set of footsteps approaching him.

When Lilly turned to the isle he was sitting in she stopped dead in her tracks. Scotty looked up and smiled, but turned his attention to the file in his hand, in his head going over the proper opening words. Unfortunately, to him every word sounded bad.
Great, why he has to be here, she thought to herself. And why he had to smile? What was the name of the case I’m looking for? Now I can’t think straight. Lilly started searching for the box with name of the victim Stillman wanted her to check on. Brendt…Brendt…Crap! That box will be somewhere close to where Scotty is. Lilly slowly moved towards him hesitating before taking each step. Trying not to look at her partner, which proved to be very hard to accomplish, she took a stand right next to him.
“Won’t find what you’re lookin’ for.” Scotty mentally slapped himself. Crappy line, Valens. Crappy plan altogether.
“Excuse me?”
Scotty looked at Lil and stood up ready to chase her in case she tried to run.
“That box. You won’t find it. I needed to talk to you. Alone.”
“All that with Stillman and Miller and case was just a…trick?” She looked into his eyes in disbelieve. Scotty hesitated a little afraid of her reaction and when he finally nodded her remaining calm scared him. He expected anything but not that. He opened his mouth to say something but she was quicker. “You could have just asked me to talk to you.”
“Would you have said yes if I asked?”
“You didn’t so it doesn’t matter.”
Scotty looked at her with puppy eyes hoping it will soften her heart a bit. “You’re still standing here, that means-“
“-means I want to hear what u have to say. Going through all that trouble and all guess you deserve a minute of my time.” She tried to sound harsh but failed, that is until she realized something. “Wait! Does it mean boss and Miller know about us?”
Valens took a deep breath. “Boss knows.” He detected panic in her eyes and right away jumped to explanation. “I didn’t tell him. He found out on his own. Not possible to hide anything from him. And Kat doesn’t know. That is unless you told her.” Lilly’s eyes widened and she looked down trying to avoiding Scotty’s look. “You told her, didn’t ya?”
“She figured it out.”
“Oh, don’t lie to me, Lil. You opened up to her. Spilled everything ‘bout what happened.” Scotty used his interrogative voice hoping she would ‘fess up to him.
“After the talk in observation, after what you have---How do you know I told her?”
Lilly shot him a look making him loose his patience. “’Cause she told me!”
“She…told you?” Panic came back. “How much she told you?”
“Everything.”
“Every..everything?”
Lil turned to run away but Scotty grabbed her arm and turned her back placing a passionate kiss on her lips. Lilly’s eyes widened in surprise at first but having him kiss her, to feel his lips on hers and having him close to her was exactly what she craved for last few weeks. She responded to his kiss wanting for this moment to last forever. When the need for air became unbearable she pulled away and saw him smile, his eyes still closed.
“I’m sorry, Scotty.” She whispered.
“You don’t want this?” Scotty’s eyes shot wide open.
“For aspirin thing. I’m sorry. That was sweet of you and I shouldn’t have yelled at you.”
“No. You were right, Lil. That was stupid of me to-”
Lilly silenced him with a kiss and mumbled against his lips. “Scotty, let’s not argue about this.”
“’K”
“That morning, at my apartment…if you wanted it too why did you say what we did in Vegas was crazy?”
Scotty chuckled. “’Cause it was crazy, Lil. The most amazing crazy thing I ever did in my life.” She smiled placing her hands around his neck and he leaned in to steal another kiss off her lips.
Then Scotty pulled away taking hold of her hands placing them close to his chest and looked into her eyes. “There is one thing I have to tell you….” He took a deep breath. “I still do want to annul our Vegas marri-” Before he had a chance to finish his sentence he was down on the ground from the hard slap she gave him. By the time he could say another word Lilly was already gone.
