Wasn't that impressed with this episode. I had the coach pegged as the doer from the start and to me it was simply another story of a poor kid who's better than the rich kids who look down on him.

It was a good episode, nicely written but too much of cliches. Text of Lilly at the beginning were cool thou. The 'never be to carefull' in flue season and looking into someone's eyes oh and taking the pen away. I don't know why but it felt nice Like Ninja said another kid from poor family stuff and although debate aspect was interesting it just showed something that all people know - life of a student is hard too. No Kat again Thing with Scotty's mother is interesting but takes damn too long... One last note on closing song Karma Police by Radiohead - would never thing of it as a closing song for this episode but it fitted nicely. I bet KM was happy too they used that song, I remember her saying she likes Radiohead.

But I loved the little things with Lilly like the pen and flu season thing I loved it. And Vera at the doctor was amazing! LOL I really enjoyed this episode. I really hope that they keep it at the 9pm slot now! that would be the best Christmas gift ever hint hint

Ha! Well, I guess it's my ignorance of the Debate teams--and me being an old fart--that leads me to give this episode an "excellent". Sure, the haves/have nots theme has been used before. But it was my unfamiliarity of this whole debate competition that had me interested in the story. Also, MUCH more easier to pay attention to the episode when it's on at an earlier hour. I'm happy to see they'll be airing CC at a reasonable time now.

I voted "good" for this one. As with other people here, I thought this was a tad on the cliched side, what with the "poor kid goes to rich school, can't fit in" angle that we've seen plenty of times before. Being a high school student sucks, whether you go to a hoity-toity school or one from the wrong side of the tracks. Every student goes through the same dramas and issues, I thought it was a little.....lazy of Cold Case to utilize this tactic again. I didn't have the coach ID'd as the killer right away but it became more apparent as the episode went on. I prefer it when you don't know who did it, right about to the very end. It keeps you watching.
As far as the music went, I thought using Karma Police to end it was very clever on CC's part. I mean, think about the title. You do wrong, wrong will do you. These things have a way of working themselves out.

I know some people who have a $$ or two to their name. None of them act like this, as I'm sure the majority of people who have a lot of money don't. I've met middle and lower class people whose sense of entitlment would put the kids in this episode to shame.

The thing with amphetamine striked me as odd. The moment I saw that flashback I knew guy is on something but I would have suspected something stronger by the way he was acting. People I've seen after taking amphetamine were talking a lot and fast but not acting so jumpy. That's just my opinion and maybe I just haven't met ebough people on it.

I just have one word: WOW I didn't feel this way with a Cold Case episode since SHUFFLE BALL CHANGE. I loved the last scenes between Luke/ his father & Luke/the coach. Powerful scenes. The right person watched the ghost. Absolutely loved it. Tottally... Idk for now but this could be one of my all time top favorites

Right now I'm just going to say that the final scene between Luke and his coach was one of my favorite scenes. It beautifully paralleled the whole debate angle that had been running through the show. It also showed what a crappy debater the coach was. I mean, if the only thing you can say during a debate is "Shut up!" "I'm better than you!" "You suck!" then you're doing it wrong.
There's also an ironic what-if scenario. What if Luke hadn't taken the gun from his father? Would his father have shot himself, but Luke would've remained alive? Or would the coach have gone to another method of killing Luke? Ex: strangling him.
I hate people like him (the coach), people who act like they're superior to everyone else, but as soon as a weakness is exposed they turn angry, and violent.
I will admit right now that I'll need to re-watch the episode. I was so focused on penning the song names that I feel I missed a few things.

I think the coach would have killed Luke in some other way. As you said, the coach is like most narcisstic people in that they consider themselves superiors to others and they HATE when people show them they aren't. This violent act was more belivable than some of the others due to that fact. Coach cared about Luke only in that Luke could get him to the championships, nothing more.

I very much liked this scene as well; the use of the camera angles, the lighting, the dual screens (can't remember if that was in the final scene, but it was very nicely used throughout the episode) was all very well done, and like TRB said, really served well to showcase the coach's character. While I think the story line was a bit cliched, I think the worst thing would have been if the friend was the doer because he hadn't gotten the scholarship; that would have ruined it for me. The coach makes sense, and I liked the last scene so much that it overshadowed the cliche for me. Now, if they would just get on with it with Scotty's mother... goodness, that story line is slower than molasses!

I voted good. This case didn't appeal to me like the previous cases did probably because I'm not really interested into debate. I think I was more interested in the subplot with Scotty's mom. The multiple screens was different, but I liked it.

I did, it was a very harrowing scene needless to say. Which reminds me; has anyone else noticed another cliche in this show? The cliche I'm talking about is the one where, Person A wants to kill themselves. Person B (ALWAYS the victim) convinces them not to do it. Person A doesn't kill themselves. Person B is killed.
I know this episode isn't the only episode that's done this before.
Oh! and the music! I was in highschool back in 1999-2002, and nearly every song they played were songs that I heard back then. There was a huge nostalgia factor with the music in this episode.

And they did it in Detention as well. Except the one who wanted to jump wound up killing his friend during the struggle.

Hello boys and girls! Hey there! It's the Byrdman coming at you on this rocking Monday night! I hope that you all are well, and that your weeks are all off to great starts, just like mine is! I gave this episode an excellent - I thought it was very well put together and it was a very interesting story. I felt for the victim immediately - smart kid coming from a rough start to show his true intelligence on the big stage. Unfortunately, Luke did have his flaws. But he did beat them in the end and was going to set the story right, like his dad helped to teach him. Lilly looked absolutely gorgeous in this episode. I loved her clothes, makeup, hair, her fire for the case. Also liked the way that she twirled that pen on her fingers at the end. Like I've said so often - what a beautiful girl! I was kept guessing for most of the case - so many possibilities. I guess there always is in a case like this involving a high schooler. I liked Luke's dad too. He went through a rough time near the end of course, but he helped to educate his son in the ways of life. I really felt bad about all the pain that he put himself through blaming himself for the death of his son. I'm glad he could smile at the end. Where was Kat? I guess it was another budget cut on the show. And Vera.....he is headed for a possible disaster. Did you hear that first doctor he saw? Liver failure, lots of bad cholesterol, and the way he was struggling with those boxes he was carrying midway through the show. And Scotty is probably about to blow a gasket. You've seen how mad he can get about his personal life, imagine what it will be like once he tracks down this loser who hurt his mom. I can't imagine it will be good. But this was an excellent episode. Held my attention for the whole show! Does anyone else think this season is getting better as we go?
