Character Name Meanings

For as long as I can remember, whenever I get into a fandom I tend to research the character's names and their meanings. I'm surprised I haven't done it for Cold Case yet, but here are the name meanings for the main characters, and some of the reoccurring cast.

Lillian (Lilly) Rush - Name of a flower, a symbol of purity. | Rush - From the Rushes and Rushing/Hasty

Scotty Valens - Scotty is a variant of Scott, and means 'from Scotland' and 'a Scotsman' The meaning of Scott is debated, but it's said that it means 'Tattoo' | Valens - Strong

Nick Vera - Nick is the short form of 'Nicholas' and means 'Victory for the people' | Vera - 'True'

William Jefferies - William, derived from Willahelm means 'will/desire' and 'helmet/protect' - 'will protect' | Jefferies - From Jeffry - From Godfry - 'Peace' and 'To Sing'

Kat Miller - Derivative of Katherine and the etymology is debated. Now means 'Pure' but once meant 'torture', 'each of the two', and 'my consecration of you name' | Miller - 'Mill Keeper'

Eddie Sacardo - Could either derive from Edward or Edmund. As Edward it means "rich guard" as Edmund it means "rich protector" | Saccardo - (NA)

Moe Kitchener - IS a short form of Maurice and means 'Dark Skinned' | Kitchener - Occupational name for someone who works in a kitchen

Paul Cooper - 'Small/Humble' | Cooper - Name for repairer of wooden vessels (tubs, barrels, etc)

Celeste Cooper - 'Of the sky/Heavenly' | Cooper - See Paul Cooper

Some of these actually really fit, but others (Moe for example) don't.

Ah, this is interesting. I really like Scotty's meaning However I would have loved if Scotty meant - Lilly's future husband. And if Lilly meant - Scotty's furutre wife. And if Saccardo meant - Lilly's enemy haha, yea but these are still great meaning.

Saccardo (or its variant Saccardi) probably derives from by-names connected with the ammunition and supplies attendants in medieval army.

I'm a geek so I already looked some of these up myself.

One thing I always wondered is why Scotty? It seems an odd choice of name, for his parents I mean, why not something even slightly Spanish? Okay, it’s probably just because the creators chose a name before his heritage, but that's a boring answer.

If his parents wanted to choose an American name to help their kid fit in, why not a Spanish name that could pass as an American one, or an American name with a Spanish alternative (like Mike - presumably short for Michael.)? And why the less common Scotty, over Scott?

Maybe they just like the name, lol.

As someone who lives in a diverse, multi-cultural background, I can say that it's not at all uncommon for the Latino/Hispanic population to have names that are not entirely of their country. I don't think the name Scotty is odd at all.

You're right, of course. I didn't mean to imply that it was unusual, or in fact that the name Scotty was particularly odd (uncommon perhaps, but not odd). Just that I'm curious as to why Scotty. A pointless question maybe, because most people probably name thier children without too much thought, but still...

Same as I was damn curious to know why Fox when I was watching the X-Files (still am actually).

I just like to think that maybe there's a reason for 'this but not that'.
