This was a perfect episode. Just perfect. I can't find a single thing wrong with it. The subject matter wasn't exactly novel to the show, but this is an approach they hadn't used before. They tackled all the most difficult aspects of it: how it hits Jimmy's family, his job, his father. The writers missed NOTHING. My hat's out to them (for the second time this season, I think) . Loved how they questioned Stillman's integrity, but not in the sense he might be "dirty"--in the sense "things were different back then". Cause they were. What's considered unethical now was unethical before too, but things were different, people got by, "everyone did it", so a newbie like Stillman back then wouldn't have known any better--he does now. Still can't figure out what the red coloring meant. I know I'm not into this symbol stuff, but this time it was screaming out at even the most skeptical of us. I remember in Eyes Wide Shut, red meant something too--not sure if anger, lust or betrayal. It was one of the three. I'll look it up and get back to you unless someone has done it already (I haven't read the rest of the posts, sorry ). Kat's line--best line of the season. And the look that went with it was pretty great too--contained anger and disbelief, like "wth is WRONG with this a$$hole?". Rush's interrogation was awesome, especially how she dove at the guy for accusing her of "babbling". Man it sucks to be treated that way just cause you're a girl. Go for it! And she got him to show some respect too. Vera's nurse storyline was good comic relief. The ep might have been almost unbearably angsty (not in a bad way) if it wasn't for that. I felt so bad for Jimmy and Coop it was like I was gonna burst in the end. As for Sarge's reaction--I see it among my patients everyday. And it's very realistic, even normal, I guess--this shocked kind of disbelief at someone you thought you knew and turns out you didn't know him that well after all. Older people, especially parents, always think sexual orientation radically changes their kids when it's really not like that at all--they're the same people, and it takes a while to get used to the idea, but it does happen. Too bad Sarge handled it so damn wrong. He'll regret it for the rest of his life--and they did a good job of showing that too. What a scrumptious episode. I'm in shock.

Excellent episode! Sure in my list of bests of this season already. Seldom have seen a tv show dealing with homosexuality so casual or natural. The way they showed this love between Coop and Jimmy made it seem sort of normal, both were pretty normal guys. Though the episode was all about people not taking it as something normal, not able to accept or tolerate. Quite like in Best Friends, at the end you get the feeling that these 2 guys had something very special, something lasting beyond death against all odds. A sad story but somehow a peasceful ending. Jimmy finally could admit his feelings and Coop was remembered as who he really was. Have noticed that there is a lot of applause from gays/lesbians for this episode. Some wondered that CBS didn't make a big deal of it before airing - well, we know they never make a big deal of CC and in this case this might have been a really good thing. But the kissing scene is causing some attention now. It was very unusual for an US-show, a mainstream show. Ahhh, there so many little things and details about this episode I like. Kat's dry comment, the visual style of the flashbacks, Vera's story, Stillman's reaction to "the old times", the acting, writing, directing, the score... have to watch the ep again. And again. (sorry, being very lazy today and only copied main part of my comment from src#1 - at least didn't simply copy Disasterfreak, though totally agree with her ;D)

FYI, some person or persons are writing some **very incredibly great stuff** about Cold Case on Wikipedia.org. I haven't had the time to explore how much is being written there, but check out how thorough this one entry alone is: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forever_Blue_%28Cold_Case_Episode%29--- Excellent episode, I feel it's definitely is great in the show's three major areas. With the storyline, very well-written and acted, and unexpectedly daring too. (I'm glad I didn't read the synopsis before seeing the episode.) A lot of biased and prejudiced characters in this episode, yet I feel they didn't fall into stereotypes like those I felt were in "Lonely Hearts" or a few that were poorly done in "The War at Home". I think by showing how corrupt the department was in those days, it made it easy to understand why so many cops would feel uncomfortable and aggressive towards gays in their ranks. The sidestory involving Vera and his neighbors were also very well-written and cleverly placed in this episode. I can't remember which recent episode it was, but I know I commented not long ago that the writers do seem to put some very deep thinking in matching the side stories with the main stories. Not only did the story between Vera and his neighbors give some comic relief to the heavy topic in this episode, but it also added to the main storyline by alluding to another hot Prejudice issue from the 1960's: Racial Prejudice. The absence of racial prejudice between Vera and his neighbors illustrates how far as a society we've come to accept those who are different from ourselves. In this episode, the topic of Interracial Relationships was done in a very subtle and positive manner through Vera's sidestory. It definitely underscored the theme of Prejudice both today and from yesteryear, and showed how attitudes can change for the better. There's definitely some very deep meaning behind Vera's line, "You know we're on the same team, right?? ... Cops, Nurses, making the world a better place." [I'm not sure if it is by coincidence or through careful planning, but the first interracial kiss on primetime US television occurred in 1968--the same year as this case. It occurred on Star Trek between Captain Kirk and Lt Uhura in the episode "Plato's Stepchildren". Hmm.... Oddly enough, another reference to Greek Culture in itself! How about that? ;D IIRC, the first lesbian kiss was on the show Ellen, but I don't think this was the first male/male kiss on primetime TV. Does anyone know more about this??] Additionally, Sexual Prejudice was evident in Kat's and Lilly's encounters as well, adding even more texture to the main storyline. Finally, nothing really groundbreaking in terms of new symbolisms in this episode other than Scotty's prominently "zebra-striped" necktie again. But I think this is the first time in this series where anyone verbally mentions leather coats and associates it with crime. We also see other odd things such as Lilly, Scotty, and Jeffries walking into the office, each carrying cups of coffee. (Does this mean anything?? Grrr... I can't nail the significance of coffee in this series. ;D ) There was also a follow-up to the "Lilly behind bars" symbolism LII points out in "Lonely Hearts". (The show opens with Lilly in jail; albeit to interview a prisoner.) I'm not sure if the Baptism in the opening scene (as well as other church scenes in this episode) is supposed to suggest anything to us, especially in regards to making predictions of Scotty's situation with the perv last season. But the theme of *vigilante cops* ran through this episode, and it showed that this type of behavior does catch up to those who take the law into their own hands. Very importantly, we see that Stillman has no tolerance for the kind of thing that Scotty did last season. Hmm.... It's really keeping me on edge and eagerly awaiting to see if Scotty gets any repercussions for his actions. Finally, an odd use of a red police car in this episode. I never knew such things existed.... I'm happy to see that this episode is getting a lot of buzz on the internet. I'm giving it a "One of this Season's Best" vote, and hope it reaches the same status as "Best Friends". --- OH!!! I missed it!! I thought it wasn't on again this week! Shame on you!!! You missed this and "Best Friends"?? OMG!!! Haven't commented on an episode in a while, but wanted to give kudos to this one. Really well done. Nice to see you post again, LillyKat! I'm busy in the "real world" too, so I can understand. I hope to see you post again more often. I can't believe you're another one who hasn't seen "Best Friends"! Hopefully, it's going to air again soon on TNT and you'll be able to see that incredible episode! This was a perfect episode. Just perfect. I can't find a single thing wrong with it.... LOL.. I just knew DF, that you'd stick with this show through season four! ;D ;D ;D

LOL. Everyone seems to know me better than I know myself . Anyway, i gotta admit I'm glad I stuck with the show. Cause it's been worth it. So glad you put up the link to wikipedia, Boxman, 'cause I was coming precisely to do that. And you've saved me the trouble ;D... thanks. The article is awesome, whoever wrote it sure put a lot of thought and love into their work. Too bad there's no way I can leave a comment saying how great I found it. I also wanted to thank you, Boxman, for setting Vera's side story in a new light. Not just as comic relief, but as an active part of the episode's theme. Can't believe I missed it, it's so obvious now that you pointed it out. Who on earth wrote this episode??? Cause whoever it is, he/she had a spark of genius. Honestly. They didn't mess up, not once.

Yeah, and I can't believe how much was written in a week's time! So true! I took a look at who wrote this-- Tom Pettit--and I'm surprised at how little is listed at his imdb.com entry.

Credits for that mostly go to Dawson Creek (2000) (yup, that teenager drama show), some say to Will&Grace (2000), but the kiss had been cut. As a kiss in Melrose place was censored (1994). Read even Desperate Housewifes already had a kissing scene between men. And the show Ellen was not the first showing a lesbian kiss, at least many credit L.A. Law (1991) for that. Only talking about US TV here. (Germany for example had the first male-male kiss on a tv show in 1990)

No symbolism Boxman? Admitted I haven't gotten to see the episode yet, just a few clips (the kiss) and FMV, but one thing clearly stood out.
The flashbacks were in black and white with a few things being in color. That has to mean something...hmm.

I haven't seen this mentioned elsewhere on the site (apologies if I've missed it) but Forever Blue was nominated for a GLAAD award. I'm not surprised, but I do hope it wins! It's up against 30 Rock, Grey's, How I Met Your Mother, and a show called American Dad! I'm not familiar with.

This episode was screened here last night. There were no real surprises for me in this. I had the 'affair' figured out before they revealed it. It made me kind of sad that his father was involved in the end (trying not to add spoilers if anyone hasn't seen it). It was great to see Charles Mesure again. I'm a big fan. I loved him on "Crossing Jordan" & "Xena". But, again, I wasn't thrilled with his character's actions. I understand that was the time, but, that just makes me so sad.
As for my favourite character, Nicky was so funny. ;D
It was good to see Chad Everett again too. I remember him from long ago & loved him too. ;D

I have to say I really loved this episode - one of the best this season so far (okay, so I've only seen ten episodes, but it's still a compliment!!). I loved the black & white flashbacks with bits of colour here & there, like the American flags in particular really stood out. Strong story & sympathetic characters I really felt for. Nick was extremely funny with his side story. Loved it.

I liked the parts with Vera and the nurse and the look on Jefferies and Rush's face when they notice Vera is surprised that one officer was gay who took him to a Sixer game. Starting to love Vera right now.. I liked how they questioned Stillman a bit as to if he was corrupt or suggestion it since he was just starting out.
