I hadn't seen this one before, and I thought that it was VERY different from all of the other episodes this season. Here's a list of what I thought was different: 1. Lilly was treated differently b/c she is female. When she went to First Thursdays (so this is where this comes from), the male cops were pretty rude to her. Butch's comment about her dusting off old files was so sexist. I can't remember her gender ever being an issue with her fellow cops before. 2. The scene where Lilly and Jeffries go to the Raymond Jennings Projects (present day) had rap music playing under it. I can't remember another episode where there was an actual song playing during a present day scene. I really liked the way this scene was done. The way it cut to the music blaring and Lilly/Jeffries walking in slow motion toward the projects was very intriguing. I thought it was well done. 3. We knew from the beginning who killed Washington. It was just a matter of why. The episode kept me guessing without wondering who the perp was. Cold Case really pulled this off well in this ep. We really went into the mind of the killer. 4. The scene with Lilly and Mason (Runner) on the track was very unusual b/c Lilly was out of work clothes. She is so unflappable! Mason was all up in her face and she didn't even blink! I was impressed. 5. The closing scenes had dialogue. It definitely broke with format when Lilly introduced Diane and Sammy during "Lean on Me." I thought this was very interesting to see talking during closing scenes. They haven't done it since, so I wonder if they're planing to do this again. Overall, I really liked this episode. Watching these earlier episodes without Scotty has got me thinking. It seems like Lilly had an even larger role (if that's possible) before Scotty came along. She would interview family members by herself, etc. It seems like the show shifted somewhat when Scotty joined the mix. Now, if Lilly is there, Scotty is as well. It's not a good or bad thing for me, just a difference. Also, I think Kite kind of changed things as well. I think Lilly had a little bit more spunk during the earlier eps. I hope they bring that back next season now that Kite's out of the picture. It seemed like Kite kind of tamed her a little bit. Anyone else notice this? Maybe it's just me.

Iwhen I first watched this episode I didn't like it very much, but recently I saw it again and I totally changed my mind.
I agree, we knew from the beginning who the killer was. It was just a matter of how and why. After Sammy appeared it was obvious that it was because of her. And I was so surprised to find out Sammy was the one to bring the tape recorder. What I don't get is why it took her so long to do it. Maybe it had something to do with her recovering from drug addiction.
I loved the track scene with Lilly and Mason. I thought it was graphically beautiful - Mason's black face contrasting with Lilly's pale skin made it look interesting. And Lilly was so tough on that scene! She rocks.
I noticed something else - when Lilly goes to First Thursdays, they show a picture of Joe hanging on the wall. I think the picture reappears on the end of Greed - at the closing scenes, when Stillman points out to some pictures on the wall. I checked out the end of Greed and it seems to be Joe's picture. Interesting.
About Lilly having more spunk during the earlier episodes - I agree, but I don't think Kite is responsible for the change. I think working cold cases softened Lilly. When she worked current cases the dramas didn't get to her as much as the cold ones do. This is the impression that I get from observing how much Lilly changed during the first season - hopefully we'll know it for sure next season, now that Kite is out of the picture.

Tatiana- Good point about Lilly working cold cases affecting her personality. I think you're right. She definitely has softened over the course of this season. I'm interested in seeing how her character develops next season. Great observation about Joe's picture in Greed. I bet you're right. I hadn't seen this ep yet, so it didn't stand out to me. It makes sense. I love the continuety on this show. So many other shows are lacking this and it drives me crazy. I hope CC maintains the continuety.

This was a cool episode. It had one of the funniest scenes on the track when the guy is jogging and you know Lilly is going to come jogging up right behind him. And then she does.

R2K - I loved that scene! It was so great. I really liked the way Lill was so tough and didn't let Runner push her around or intimidate her.

I just saw this episode for the first time in rerun. (It's the end of season three in the regular show.) How much things have changed! This was a great episode, and I totally agree with TVFan's observations about how different it was! I wish I could comment more about the episode, but I have too much to do in the 'real world'....

I watched this today, and I really liked the story for this episode.
The fact that it was a police officer that was murdered made it more like we need to catch this person. All from the beginning we heard about 'the runner', Like who is he, where is he, did he do it?
When she met Mason, she was like dont talk to me like that attitude, the bit where he was running and I knew she was going to run up next to him from a ep I see 3 days ago she ran to someone in that one. He was going about his buisness running and in came Lilly, I laughed I could not help it. When they stopped and talked she bounced in front of him. When he was all up in her face, she did not flinch, blink or even move, kinda of you do not scare me!
I really thought 'Sammie' had been his mistress, when it turned out to be a little girl he was looking out for, Awww bless. When Lilly and Jefferies was walking through the projects and that gansta/rap music was playing was brilliant, they both just walked up in there going about what they was doing. Just looked like y here we come. If you know what I mean.
The ending where she introduced Sammie to that lady who lost her husband washington. They stopped the end music for Lilly to introduce her which I found was unusual as the song normally plays right through with no interuptions, but it did make the ending alot better for them to meet.
I have noticed that Lilly was alot more feisty if that's the right word to use in the earlier episodes, she is like on her own doing her thing, you have to be abit sometimes in thier face and all that, I dont think Lilly had changed much in the later episodes I have seen, but it's very different with out Scotty there. ?!

I liked this episode and it showed what Lilly had to go through as a woman as to being the detective.
But Lilly sure did show her stubbornness when Will told her to not go to Jones' tavern..
I didn't realize that Sammy was the lady who brought in that tape but I didn't think she was the one who killed Joe.

Good episode.
It was an interesting case.
I'm not sure if I quite buy that a young girl would just randomly stick a needle full of heroin in her arm because she found it, but other than that, Joe's devotion to Sammie was sweet. I'm glad Dianne finally got to know the truth that he was faithful to her, and that Lilly bought Sammy home to her.
The music and atmoshphere were very well done- it really did feel like it was in the seventies. This show did that so well. It makes me a bit sad that all those costume and set designers are probably now working on much less interesting shows. I bet it was a thrill to work on Cold Case, and have a different era each week.
Glad that Lilly managed to show the older cops how determined and capable she was. She really was a fantastic lead character. There are no others like her.
