Even though I don't get TNT, I'm glad they're not cutting the eps--for the sake of those who are tuning into the show for the first time.
I watched this ep for the first time a couple of days ago and it was REALLY GOOD. I really need to go back and watch Season 1 again. The cases are amazing, the dynamics are amazing. I'd forgotten all that. Season 2 has more "character moments", but season 1 kicks its butt. I honestly hadn't realized that before. And so far season 3 really isn't doing it for me... but I guess we'll have to wait and see. It's just too ensemble for its own good, the characters' power fades.

I just watched this episode. It was very good; I really liked how Lilly was obviously annoyed about Bruce's opinions on the "useless cats", and her little sarcastic aside about, "That's really spectacular..." when the killer was talking about how he could get into small spaces. Vera's determination to win this case was excellent, particularly how Lilly said, "What did you DO to him?" and then gave Vera that little hilarious smirk when Gail's neighbour let her into the flat. There were a lot of little Lilly moments that I loved.
When they said that the rapist had indicated that he was going to strike again, I thought they might use Lilly as 'bait' or something, and I was so glad that they didn't do that. One thing I didn't like was the style of flashback. I like more flashbacks (although, to be honest, I think it might have been too disturbing in a case like this one, althoug they could have had a couple more), but the blur got on my nerves after a while. However, I know it was done to fit the tone of the episode - which it did. Just a question - they made quite a deal out of how the guy shaved thoroughly before attacking, but why did he do that? Was it ever explained?

Just a question - they made quite a deal out of how the guy shaved thoroughly before attacking, but why did he do that? Was it ever explained? Funny, just rewatched the episode a few days ago and can't tell if they actually explained why, but I was paying attention to other things. For one, they hardly ever found evidence at the crime scenes to give a hint, at who the rapist could be, no finger prints or other things. In one case though they found sperm, o they had DNA to compare with. And later they found a cigarette on another crime scene. Shaving though is not a really good way to avoid leaving evidence (unlike maybe some might think), not to mention, Carl never shaved his hair of head. Probably though he might have thought it could help to avoid detection? His girl friend tells Lilly and Vera, that he eplained her, that he was shaving all of his body because of biking. Not only bicyclist do it, some athlets do, but I think, that it's more common and known with bikers than with any other sport. When they first mentioned it, it was my first thought, go and look for a guy doing biking - but I'm into that sport myself, so I do know that many shave at least their legs, even non-professionals. It was the first really good hint at who the guy could be, guess that's why they mentioned it so often. It was a kind of signature. Why do bikers shave (their legs)? Partially it's because everybody does, it's a myth and a ritual. Air resistance is one reason given, another, that it's more comfortable - when you ever bike long distances you sure will discover, that hair in some places can be uncomfortable. Another reason are wounds, they seem to heal better when you're shaved, not to mention, it's more hygienic, and most bikers experience falls and abresions. Last but not least, shaved, well tanned and muscular legs do look better than hairy ones, right. Psychological: The shaving was a part of the act for Carl. It was a ritual, preparing himself for the woman of his desire. He wanted to prove, as creepy and weird as it sounds, that he was a good, well behaved, clean, sober, sensitive person. He didn't want to be one of the guys taking a woman casual, he was going on a date, so to speak.

Thank you, Myril! Now that I think about it, the psychological (and the physical) aspects do make sense. I just wondered if I'd missed something because they made such a big deal out of it, you know?

Really liked this episode. Loved how Vera was all antsy and getting annoyed. The guy who hurts cats for research, I can understand him not wanting to give his DNA sample but it sure looked like he was guilty.
I never thought of them using Lilly as bait but I guess they could have but glad they didn't.
Not much of Jefferies and Stillman.

Not a huge fan of this episode. It wasn't awful, it just didn't grab me.
Maybe it was because the victim didn't actually know the victim, so we couldn't see the storyline unfold in the usual way. Maybe it was the recency of the case. Cases that are five years or less don't really seem to be as strong as the older cases, although there are exceptions (such as the brilliant Fly Away). Carl was creepy and I didn't care about him at all.
As a disclaimer, I should add that I worked in a museum for a long while and own a cat, so maybe this case was just a little too creepy for me.
Gail seemed like a nice woman, but I didn't really feel I'd gotten to know her.
Vera really did mess up on this one. I couldn't work out why he was so sure it was Bruce. Why would a serial rapist targeting strangers suddenly turn to his girlfriend? If Vera had kept a more open mind, then perhaps they would have solved the case earlier.
