Cold Case started early tonight: 8:56pm....
This episode for me was quite different, one thing I'm glad is that Lilly isn't bringing up the shooting. I liked how we met Veronica's father, and how Kat holds her in the last scene.
I really am unsure what to think about this one...

I really like Season 5 thus far. This episode was very provocative like the other episodes. I can't imagine it being easy for actors to portray such hatred on TV. I think I understand why they chose the time period as they did. In summer 1999, one of the most talked about cases was the Benjamin Smith case where he went on a shooting rampage in Chicago and Indiana killing 2 people and injured dozens before the cops chased him down and he killed himself.
Benjamin Smith was a mixed up college kid caught up in Matthew Hale's perverse teachings much like the character Elliot (the killer). Since then his organization has gotten publicity now and then.
I'm very happy the strike is over..tis a shame we have to wait til April before we see new episodes..but hey..at least we know they're coming.

I liked this ep. It was so sad. And it seemed to fly by. My mouth was already dropping open before it even started, when they showed that "discretion advised" thing. I was like whoa. It was weird, but right when I saw how Elliot was acting when they brought up Tamyra, I knew he killed her. I guess that's what happens when you get so attached to it. Anyways I figured he was gonna kill her "b/c he loved her, not spider, blah blah" --love stuff. But then once the case started developing, that of course didnt come close to the reason. Spider was freaky and his mom was CRAZY. I LOOOOVED it when Lindsay said "That was when I was dumb." and then Lilly slyly replied with a "No, you still are." She got her GOOD. And I'm also glad Kat stood up to "spider" when her and Vera were in the little white supremecy club, which was completely crazy, and I can't even imagine acting like that. And I enjoyed seeing her converse with Veronica's dad. I can't wait to see the real details of what happened with them. And I did like seeing her hold Veronica @ the end--too sweet. From what songs I remember, they were cool. But the case is what fully won me over this time. ;D

Wow, I feel like I need a shower after that episode. It was just so....dark...and evil...and dirty. Blecch. Not that it wasn't well-done; it was well-written, well-acted, and all of that, just the subject matter was...shudder...
Anyway, I found it interesting to have an episode concentrate on Vera and Miller; it felt like Lil and Scotty were barely in this one. Not that that's a complaint, just an observation. They did get in a couple of good zingers. One question: how did they know Elliot was half Jewish? Did they say that earlier in the ep and I just missed it?
Loved the use of red throughout. It was different from the usual color scheme; even Lilly was wearing red. I don't remember her doing that much.

I'll probably post more about this episode tomorrow.
I knew who the killer was as soon as they showed him. My suspicions were not lessened, when upon being asked about Tamara's death, Elliot says "She died?"
I've noticed all the guilty say this, and it's becoming old hat. I want a new hat.
I have to say I was also a bit bothered by Lilly's attitude when she notes that Elliot reads about Nordic mythology. They could have just noted about him reading Mein Kamf, and those other books.
I don't think a person reading Nordic mythology makes them a neo-Nazi. Just as me studying demonology doesn't make me a Satanist.
And for some reason I'm wondering why they left out the numbers 88 and 14.

Bizarre Reverend: Various white power organizations have obsessions of what they consider "pure white". It's not just the color of your skin that matters to them, it's also the ancestry. For some, pure white means those of germanic, nordic, and anglo only. Since Elliot discovered his mother was jewish and was a self hating as a result, it would not have been unusual for him to be obsessed with nordic mythology.

^^That's not what I meant, actually. I never said that Elliot reading Nordic mythology was unusual. I was pointing out that not everyone who reads Nordic mythology is a neo-Nazi. I was only expressing some disappointment, that CC seemed to imply this. "Revered Bizarre."

I agree with Cellogal, about Lilly and Scotty not being in this that much. I kinda of missed them, since they work so well together. Especially since Lilly is my favorite character...

Sorry to post twice, but did anyone notice that when the camera flew above the forest it reminded me of " The Woods" before the squad found the body.
Did anyone notice that Scotty was a little bothered by this case as well?

Did anyone notice that Scotty was a little bothered by this case as well? Yeah, I knew Scotty would be bothered by this case also. Especially after the chat with Nora's kid. I still don't know what to say about this episode. Just, wow. The episode was almost similiar to the movie "American History X". I liked how "Cold Case" also chose to explore this route.

First, I don't think they were singling out a book on Nordic Mythology anymore than they would have if they had only mentioned Mein Kampf. It was the sum of his reading matter that was important, not the individual volumes.
Second, there were two things I was puzzled by. I will let the half Jewish comment slip as the guys could have discovered it when they were investigating the various characters. The first was the hammer. What happened to it? Wouldn't it have had Elliot's fingerprints on it? Second, the comment Elliot made to Lily about (paraphrasing) her being a race mongrel? Huh?
I thought this was one of the most important episodes ever. It made me sick. It made me want to vomit. It made me nervous. Okay, it terrified me.
One thing I like about Cold Case is how the guys' personal lives are seamlessly woven into the show. They are part of the show, not something added just to give depth. We are always shown just enough.
And is anyone else wondering if Vera is going to end up with Miller?
Personal note. I'm half Hispanic which makes me a race mongrel in every sense of the word. Last summer we had a car full of skinheads chase a Mexican guy through our mobile home park because they had supposedly caught him with one of their sisters. They beat him almost to death right across the street from my house. I still remember how all of my Hispanic neighbors quietly went back in their houses (after the police were called) almost as one and locked their doors.

I, too, picked up on some unease on Scotty's part, not surprisingly, first with Miguel and then when Elliott basically accused him of being hired merely to fill a quota and not because he's a good detective. Scotty's all cocky and everything on the surface, but I think that's a mask, especially given how many times he has screwed up in the past. Good for him, though, for keeping his cool, and he got the last laugh ("That must make you the biggest self-hatin' SOB I've ever seen.").

A difficult episode to watch. None of the people involved came out of it well, even Tamyra despite her wish to get out. Spider's mother was just plain creepy. Hugging Elliot was a clever more by her. Giving him the "pure white" mother he wanted. First, I don't think they were singling out a book on Nordic Mythology anymore than they would have if they had only mentioned Mein Kampf. It was the sum of his reading matter that was important, not the individual volumes. Agreed, it was his collection of works giving a view into his interests and thoughts. As a economics teacher you would expect a greater slant towards that area. Elliot called Lilly a "race traitor". Quite why I'm not sure. Perhaps because she was there with Scotty and worked with other non-whites. Or perhaps because she was arresting him for, as he believed it to be, a service to America. I think some us of have been pondering that for a while. There's been quite a lot of banter going on between them. Although Nick has shown himself to be more than a little nosey about Kat's personal life he is clearly looking out for her as well.

It feels wrong to say that I really liked this episode. Clearly, I found the subject matter to be upsetting and disturbing just as everyone else here did, but the story was done very well. You add in the acting, the AMAZING directing on the part of John Peters and the always beautiful cinematography (the use of the muted grays and brights reds = brilliant!!) and you get One. Powerful. Episode!!! The hatred in this episode was so strong it was actually affecting the detectives. It managed to transcend the television screen. It was disturbingly palpable. And yet, that's what made this episode work so well. We may not like it when something this unsettling gets under our skin, but that's the mark of good writing. Not surprising, though, because the CC writing staff is always blowing me away. Liz's script for this one was certainly no exception. I had been wondering what the "Spiders" title referred to, and then Spider explained his nickname: Flies and mosquitoes would inherit the Earth if it weren't for spiders. But, I figured the flies and mosquitoes meant pieces of crap like Tamyra's father. Fast forward 55 minutes, and suddenly flies, mosquitoes and spiders all take on a darkly and disturbingly different meaning. Sure, Truitt was the spider, but the mosquitoes and flies are anyone who doesn't fit into the perfect Aryan mold. That's when I knew this episode was going to get very dark very quickly. This was a very engrossing hour. I found myself completely wrapped up in my television to the point that the commercial breaks were a bit jarring. Listening to Elliot's ending monologue laced with hatred and lacking any semblance of remorse for anything that he had done really put the icing on a very unnerving cake. BTW, my take on him calling Lilly a "traitor to her race" had to do with her disagreeing with him. This was all it took for Elliot to kill Tamyra. Plus, as RichE said, she was arresting him for what he considered to be "saving his people" Teddy Roosevelt-style. It was just a warped way of thinking all around. Finally, I'm liking the Kat story line. As anneinchicago said, CC does an excellent job of weaving the detectives' personal stories around the cases. They've always done this well, and Kat's story is no exception. I was surprised to learn that she has a darker past than first thought. Overall, an excellent outing. Can't wait for the continuation on this incredible season.

I'm suprised that Scotty didn't go after that guy after he said something reguarding his race. That's a first for him, maybe he's finally learning not to do this??

hmmm very interesting episode and although the subject matter was uncomfortable, I was pleasantly surprised when that's where the storyline went.
It seems like this season has been consistantly good and every episode is surprising and contains so many twists.
So glad the strike is over!

Anyone else puzzled by the fact that Tamyra was found propped up somewhere, as we saw at the start, but Elliot killed her in what looked like railway sidings and left her on the ground?

Something that caught my eye in this ep as well was that Lilly seems to be wearing a LOT more reddish-burgundy sweaters. This ep and I'm pretty positive "Sabotage" was another one. Used to be blue-&-black, now red? Symbolism...? You never know with Lilly Rush I'm suprised that Scotty didn't go after that guy after he said something reguarding his race. That's a first for him, maybe he's finally learning not to do this?? I was also totally shocked @ this
