Ann, I too had tears in my eyes at the end, up until the point in the montage when they showed the scenes on the beach and then I really started crying, lol. I think it was the juxtaposition of adult Maura holding the hand of her sister. Seeing that just really hit home the tragedy of Vivian's life ending so early, always being four years old while her sister grew up.
Overall, I really enjoyed this episode. It did leave a lot of unanswered questions though. I do like that they're introducing the new detective slowly, even though I'm not wild about them adding a new character.

Would somebody please tell me how the little girl died? I'm sitting here and can't watch this episode until next weekend ..... So.... Please tell me.......... Their father was abusive and their mom was getting ready to leave him with another guy until they went back to the house to find their cat, and that's when the father got in the car and drove them to a bridge over a river, or something like that. The father was ready drop their daughters into the river because the mom wasn't looking to give him another chance, and all he wants is to keep the family together, the mom saved one of them (Maura, and left her at a church so the father couldn't get to her and hurt her the same way.), but unfortunately, couldn't save the other. (Vivian)

Well, it's unfortunate to think that spousal abuse has no boundries as to who it happens to. I remember this alot growing up in the 60's and into my teens and twenties. How women are victims of these monster husbands. It's so totally sick and it still goes on today as we speak. I'd like to think it doesn't but it does. Here's a site that gives out info about this: abuseFrom what TVFan posted up in General Discussion regarding the ratings we may have the highest viewed ep to date here. Can't wait to see the totals this week. The most viewed ep was "It's Raining Men" 18.4 Million: Season 2. (i think)

This was an extremely case-heavy episode, but it worked because the case was so involved. I thought this episode definitely had the Veena emotional hallmarks. I found the entire first half very disturbing emotionally and my stomach was in knots! The second half was a little easier to swallow because I had made the shift in my mind and adjusted to the heavy nature of the story. I think it's always harder on this show when the victims are children. Like Naj posted, it was difficult to realize how ignored child and spousal abuse was back then, even by the medical community.
I loved Balducci and what he did for Cindy and her girls. He was like a ray of sunshine in a very dark world for them. His parking lot justice and "killed in the line of duty" trick were great! I really liked Vera and Jeffries reaction and their decision to look the other way. It was nice to see Lilly and Scotty working together again, and Lil seemed more in control of her emotions this episode. Gone was the uncontrollable anger and rage that she had earlier in the season, and in its place was a more sedate Lilly. She still doesn't seem like herself, but I like that for now. As I've said before, I want the writers to take us through her journey.
The ending fell a little flat for me. I had a hard time completely buying Vivian's death. I know her father was a horrible person who was capable of killing her just to spite her mother, but I thought dropping her off the bridge was a little harsh, even for him. I don't know, people are capable of all sorts of things that I would never think they were, so anything is possible. I loved the closing scenes with Maura and her mother's reunion and then Balducci joining them on the beach. I also loved the two little girls holding hands by the water. So sad! Stillman's scene where he had the bartender remove the picture was nice as well. I see this new detective is being introduced very slowly, and she has some sort of history with a shooting in Fishtown. Overall, another strong one in a recent run of excellent episodes.

Oooooo thanks TVFan, I haven't seen the ep so have been waiting for your summary. Sounds a good ep although I was hoping for some personal stuff on Lilly!! I'll just have to wait longer for that I guess!! But come on CC people we've had nearly half the season and still no Lilly stuff, no cats, no out of work stuff!!!! I'm dying here!! :smile28: :smile28:

I do assume that this is a real case somewhere to have happened. I would have liked to know the father's reaction after he threw his own child off the bridge. But if he can break that same kids arms as he did in two places then I expect he didn't think anything of what he did. I did buy the fact that the father threw Vivian off the bridge. This is a sick twisted monster. Probably DF can tell us his psychological profile. Maybe BPD.
This exchange summed it all up for me: Lilly: "What kind of family doesn't report their kid missing?" Scotty: "The kind of family that kills their kid."
TVFan,
Yea, this was a meaty, hefty chunk of a case. But when they do them this good, this is what I'd like to see each week rather than comprimising their personal storylines for a lesser welll done case.
That one woman Tiffany looks like Mrs. John Abbot from the Young and the Restless. I have to check and see if that really was her playing that character.

I totally agree Naj. When the cases are this good, it's ok if it comes at the expense of more character development. I like the way this show has a nice mix of heavy cases like this one and lighter ones that give us more character development. There's also the occasional ep that blends both perfectly (Saving Patrick Bubley).

The lining is definately pink!! To me anyways!!
So, I've just finished watching this ep and wow, it will go down as another one of my faves. Although very case heavy the story was fantastic and I thought Megan Follows as Maura was great.
This is one of the episodes that made me cry. When Art was telling Vera and Jeffries that he drove around for hours looking for Cindy and the girls and he cried as they walked out of the interview room I started and did really stop till the end!!
The only thing I would have liked maybe was more of a reaction from Lilly. I mean she did have a few 'looks' and made a couple of subtle comments but I guess because the ep was so case heavy it would have been hard to fit in.
Not forgetting to mention how Lilly looked [it's become a bit of a tradition now with me], I thought she looked as fabulous as ever!! Great clothes, great hair and great make-up and just generally looking as stunning as usual.
It was nice to see her and Scotty working together again and I just loved the scene where Jeffries is interviewing Tiffany!! So funny, and what a great smile he has!! ;D
Although Tracie Thoms only had a short bit at the beginning and despite the fact that I had forgotten all about her at the end, she did okay and I think if they continue to ease her into the show things could go alright this time. I mean anything has gotta be better than Sutton, and I think this character could be likeable and seems the type of girl that would be a great friend to Lilly. I'm keeping my fingers crossed still though, cos it is still very early days!!!
Overall, a really good episode with an ace soundtrack to match.

I just watched this episode last night...very powerful. Cindy's comment about the door being nailed shut, with each nail a time that she didn't leave, was haunting.
As a domestic abuse survivor, I felt that the episode was spot-on about the attittudes in the sixties. I am approximately the same age as Maura/Vivian.
Of course, I loved Vera and Jeffries' omission of Art's revelation that justice was dealt out to the father.
