I think Lilly is making progress, there was a definate change after " Lonely Hearts'. I think Lilly realized that it wasn't bad being single and that she is slowly discovering what her happiness is.

This is a good point, LII. I do believe Lilly is coming to terms with herself as she is ... again, I believe I'm just impatient and have too many CC eps on my mind at times.

LillyKat, re: Lilly and Ellen -- I've had many roommates over the years, and from knowing them I don't see Lilly's hangup with her mom too unusual. I've known several people who've carried "parent issues" into their thirties, as the case is with Lilly. And don't forget that Lilly may even have **bigger** issues with her dad that's buried sooo deep, that we don't even get to see it at all in the show. One of the things about hitting your thirties is that you actually know what it's like to be an adult that's old enough to have kids. For some, it makes it even *harder* to understand a parent's poor parenting skills, since they can't imagine themselves doing such things to their own kids. (Or treating imaginary kids so neglectfully, as in Lilly's case). Getting older doesn't necessarily make things better--It only raises more questions as to why a parent could have been so bad.

So, throw your tomatoes and bring out the whips. Where's Disaster Freak to back me up?? Sorry, Michelle. You know I love ya to pieces and all, but this time I really don't agree. In fact, I'm going to be wildly extravagant (not that anyone cares after all this time--you've all moved on to greener pastures ) and disagree with EVERYONE I always agree with--namely, Naj, TVFan and Michelle. I liked this episode and gave it a "best of the season". Maybe I'm just biased because, deep down, I share Scotty's view of pedophiles. Don't scream at me! I know I'm not being rational, and of course I wouldn't go shoving them off buildings--but I honestly think child molesters should be wiped off the earth. To me, in my heart (not in my mind, my mind knows better), child molesters are NOT human and no amount of rationalization will make it any different. I don't mean just pedophiles... there's lots of pedophiles out there that NEVER harm a kid. And while I'm not clapping their back or anything, I'll at least allow they deserve to live. But when someone HARMS a kid... I mean, c'mon!!! You have "feelings"... and you can't "control them anymore"... does that really make it understandable for someone to rape and kill a kid?? Please. There is NO FORGIVENESS for child molesters... especially recurring ones. Also... I have a soft spot in my heart for Mitch Pileggi. Unlike Naj, I felt he acted well and convincingly. As someone, I think Lillykat said, the episode's pace and change of scenery was also refreshing. It was a "fast and snappy" episode, the kind I like to see from time to time--and the plot was well handled. To a T. I didn't find ANYTHING wrong with this ep--Scotty's reaction and its link to his brother's molestation seemed believable, his debate with the ADA was VERY realistic (I've had some similar ones), dialogues in general were really good, there was no special lack of Lilly (not that I'd really notice that anyway) and... I didn't see anything wrong with Scotty going to negotiate with Mitch in the end. Sorry.

I really liked this episode. I could never guess the killer, and the revelation made me think what we all already know - we think we know people, but truth is people can always surprise us, for good or bad. The ending scene gave me chills. The garage door going down, the boy's fate being slowly written.
Scotty really let me down in this episode. Either he's really immature, or really stupid. How can he tell the details of a case to anyone, and mostly to a guy who's so deeply involved? Honestly I don't care that this subject, or any other, hit him personally. If he's so easily affected by what Mitch was doing to him, he should've stepped out of the case. I was surprised Stillman didn't say anything.

I really liked this ep! Didn't hurt that mitch pileggi was in it (although the fact that they called him mitch in the show as well was a little strange). Interesting storyline. It obviously hit home for scotty which is why he screwed up I think. Or his head was in the wrong space thinling about his brother.

this was aired on TG4 last night and although I had already seen it, I had a much more emotional reaction because of the disappearance of little Madeleine McCann. It just made me think of her and it made me so emotional, I actually wanted to cry because the news has extensively covered Maddie's disappearance and she's only four years old, not unlike Clay.
That is what I love about this show, although it doesn't try to, it links a fictional story to the real world with such ease and such delicacy. It actually made me consider becoming a detective *insert puh laugh here* because I felt the need to help the police in Portugal because I'm so displaced from them here in Ireland.
But on a happier note, what was hilarious about this episode was Lil's knowledge of comic books. I used to watch Batman the animated series when I was younger and have seen the movies so I found that funny. Just gotta love that girl!
Mitch Pileggi - that dude rocks. That's all I have to say.
This was an excellent and a very relevant episode. I'm hoping for a happier ending though.

Did anyone notice that the building he was holding him hostage on was the same building that Max Keenen set Dep. Director Kirby on fire in Season 2 of Bones? I believe it was episode 11 "Judas on a Pole."

Good episode.
I wonder if Mitch Hathaway got charged with anything. On the one hand, he killed two people and threatened a third. On the other hand, he killed them out of stress due to the rape and murder of his child, and he'd already spent twenty years in jail for a crime he didn't commit.

Lately I've been watching Law & Order UK and they had an episode (Buried) remarkably similar to this one. The '90s show did it as well early in its run (though I have yet to see that episode), so CC would be the one copying. However, it had a more interesting angle: memories recovered by hypnosis techniques. Looking more into it, the real life basis case seems to be Susan Nason.
As for this episode, not knowing about the connection to the real case, the choice of unsub seems really random. Like the writer was running out of time and said "The killer will be...uh...um...oh, how about that guy?" A one-off murder doesn't square with the pathology they gave him. Someone like this does not stop at just one, especially one he got away with. So did he kill others? Are there more bodies out there? The L&OUK episode at least established that its character had other abuse victims before and since, and that the one death was accidental.
It may have been expected, but Sean Whalen would've been a better choice. That way our climax would've been Horace Pinker vs. Roach.
