The episode has to be one of the best this season. First off I was very surprised how Lilly took charge of her mother, you could acutally hear tears in her voice. Ellen despite being drunk pulled her into an embrace , which I wasn't expecting. The look on Lilly's fact was absolutely priceless ( it was like she never had recieved a hug from her). One thing struck me how Ellen always wants to meet someone to find her happiness. She should really take a lesson from Lilly who isn't this time trying to use love to be happy. I think after the ' Lonely Hearts ' case and the hallway talk with Scotty, Lilly kind of realized that she can find happiness without being in love. The case was really good how the flashback were in the style of the old silent movies. I liked the ending where Lilly is walking as she passes Frances and how they look at each other seeing two very different generations, but the camera stops on Lilly as it turns from color into sepia ( good work on the cinenotography there) Did anyone noticed how Ellen doesn't have any pictures up of her family in her apartment and how messy it was? Lilly does love her mother but can't take seeing her like this as she puts it" I'm getting too old for this". I think what Frances was doing was very good paving the way for modern women, standing up to what she believed in even it that meant getting killed for it. Her mother was extremely spitful and arrogent against change. May I say that Kathryn was excellent in keeping with Lilly's emotions. Bot her and Meredith Baxer were good.. This shows that Lilly has changed since BLF, appearing much more stronger and not letting her mother get into her skin. Well Done

i thought this was a pretty good episode. strong plot tied to true american history. the tragic ending was unexpected as it was really accicental but i think the episode focused more on the triumphs as a result of efforts from many women like frances contributed to the suffrage movement. there was something significant in the scene when lily played the phonograph recording of frances' mother "celebrating" about the 19th amendement's ratification..but i am disturbed that the mother never owned up to what really happened to francess nonetheless.
it was nice to see the actress who played the modern "audrey". if you ever watched studio 54 she was "dottie"...i wish i had a grandma that cool hehe
meredith birney did a great job. i always thought she was a great actress while she was trying to break out of the "elise keaton" image for years.
i am also a fan of carolyn mccormick (frances' mother) ..she played dr. olivet on law and order for years. she looked great for the part.
all in all..a good episode..great guest stars...very different than the modern cold cases we've seen. ive always been a fan with how the post-production team have handled flashback scenes...its an art in itself and very effective. kudos

I enjoyed the episode too. I liked how they kept the flashbacks in "real world" colors instead of black and white, and/or sepia.
I have to say that I laughed at the ending. Not because it was funny. The way that Lilly and Frances walked past each other so nonchalantly. Then they turn around and give each other these looks. Frances the old old old generation looking at Lilly like "We did it." and Lilly (one of the only two female homicide detectives in Philly) with this look like "Wow."
And the way it paused on Lilly and gave that sepia tone to her. Down right marvelous.

I loved it and I have nothing bad to say about it.
Liked Vera's comment about the gramophone; "The iPod of 1919" ;D

Did anyone notice how breathless Lilly got during the scene at her mother's apartment, how she said ' No I'm getting too old for this'

I agree with you on this. It was funny...if you hadn't watched the episode and turned it on at this part you may have intrepreted those looks differently. ;D I loved the Lilly ending shot turning to that color. Also those two lines of the same: "Lilly Rusy, the only female homocide detective in Philadelphia. Well, there's two now." Like who are they making fun of there. Did anyone catch this line the second time? What did Vera say? I've tried replaying the scene but can't make out his words. This whole suffragette theme ... well ... is kind of infuriating to think life was so different less than 100 years ago. Why did the women put up with it as long as we have? It's just God awful that the WHITE man had that much control. I think had I lived back then I would have mounted somekind of coo that women just don't marry nor have anything to do with men. Yea, band together like Amazons and if we want babies only allow some men in for one night. Sound familiar. I honestly don't think I could have stood be around the male species. Ellen Rush did a great job. I hope she comes back and she and Lilly get to work on this whole problem of Lilly's childhood. Did anyone notice that when Lilly came in the door of Ellen's with the two full bags of groceries that she only emptied one and it was just yogurt? Like where's the other stuff? And the end I thought Eleen was going to try to kill herself but wasn't that an electric stove anyway? And the way when Ellen hugged Lilly how Lilly gets so rigid. I enjoyed the ep very much. I'm giving it an excellent because of the case and the Lilly story. I think she left the other one on the floor, before trying to clean up her mother's living room.

*I'm having problems with this thread. I can't modify - it won't let me.*
I just wanted to add that I liked the underscore music. I have no idea of the songs of the day.

One thing struck me, After Ellen said ' Or right your j-o-b is important or something like that' the look on Lilly's face was shocked liked she kind of felt guilty about it.

It's letting me modify (that's how I added this line). Perhaps the graphic didn't load properly for you to click on. Also those two lines of the same: "Lilly Rush, the only female homocide detective in Philadelphia. Well, there's two now." I think it showed that Lilly was known of and admired within the city for being "the only female homicide detective in Philadelphia.' He said "Well there's two now, and I'm detective Vera one of the nameless male horde." Funny Lilly dropped the first bag to her right as she was stood in front of the refrigerator to open it. So it was between Lilly and "us". Probably non-refrigerator requiring stuff. The scene stopped mid-hug so the other stuff could have been dealt with later. Plus is may have looked better on camera for Lilly to be carrying 2 bags as she entered but after that it wasn't important other than for her to look in the refrigerator to see the lack of food, and then use a bag to tidy up.

I think after the ' Lonely Hearts ' case and the hallway talk with Scotty, Lilly kind of realized that she can find happiness without being in love. Well said, LII, especially how this episode showed that some relationships can "cage-in" a woman. Did anyone notice that when Lilly came in the door of Ellen's with the two full bags of groceries that she only emptied one and it was just yogurt? Like where's the other stuff? Oh, I'm sure the other bag was filled with cans of lentil bean soup, puffed-rice cakes, soy milk and other yogic diet food... Just two days earlier (on Friday night), our local CBS affiliate ran a story about the dangers of ovens that tip over. Several people have been seriously burned when they leaned down on an open oven door and had water boiling above on the stove fall on them--almost exactly like what was shown in the episode! For a moment, I was really afraid Ellen was about to scald herself. BTW, water boiling on a stove is an imagery used several times in this series. Off the top of my head, I can remember it was used in flashbacks in the episodes "The Hen House" and "The River".

*I can't even copy any text. Don't know what's going on* RichE: One of the nameless male horde! ;D Like who are they poking at in the audience about that. Yea, boxman, I think Lilly brought Ellen health food. Maybe even some tofu! I thought that was brilliant to hide a bottle of vodka in the oven.

*I can't even copy any text. Don't know what's going on* Weird. Can you explain what the sequence of events are. Do you have "quote", modify" and "delete" buttons? Get the feeling Vera was getting a little fed up of all the Lilly-lovin' going on? He'd heard the "only female homicide detective" line a couple of times by then. As Lilly put stuff in the fridge in the Lilly/Ellen scene there were some lines like this: Lilly: Maybe if you eat something it will help settle the vodka. Ellen: I'm so tired all the time... Lilly: Cheated you Mom and stopped making excuses and start going to your AA meetings again. I'm not sure about the bits in italics. The cheated word can't be right but that's what it sounds like. Can anyone else pick it out?

This episode is why I have come to love Cold Case. For me, it was perfect. It was flawless. It was brilliant. It had all the elements that I so enjoy seeing in an episode: a compelling, original story set back in history that makes me not only think about the time period, but also makes me continue to appreciate and be grateful for the time in which I have grown up – especially as a woman; beautiful and spot-on production value that recreates the era of 1919 as if it were yesterday; a glimpse into Lilly’s personal life – one that finally shows us what we have been hearing about for the past several years; a tribute to Lilly as a woman, for the work that she does, for the time in which she lives … the closing shot, as Lilly passes Francis and then is captured in a picture that fades to sepia tone, perhaps suggesting she herself is worthy of her own place in history … I just loved that – especially as a history buff myself. I can’t compliment Tyler Bensinger enough for the story, Kevin Bray for the direction, the casting group for the actresses chosen to portray both young and old … it worked on every single level for me, and made up some serious lost ground. Absolutely top drawer. Was everything I was hoping this episode would be. Thank you, CC.

I think Ellen's gone to her furthest point seeing how her drinking has effected Lilly. The hug for me was strange how Lilly looked almost trying to break free at the end. Maybe Ellen does love her,but it's weird how everything is coming sort of clean btwn them

I voted this episode as excellent.
I am not usually a fan of the older cases but this case surprised me as being one I really enjoyed. I do think the Lilly bi-story (and other characters too) help to make episodes more enjoyable as it breaks the usual ‘routine’ of the episodes. The last few and many this season have stuck to the same format so much that I could just about predict what will happen when, on some episodes making them less enjoyable. There were also a few one liners in there from various characters which were amusing and lacking in many other episodes. The ending montage was a little different focusing on Lilly at the very end and the two characters actually seem to react to each other a little also helps to break up the format and I loved.
I enjoyed, and always do, the personal scenes with Lilly. I could see Lilly’s embarrassment of her mother when she went to see her in lockup and the instant role Lilly took up of the parent, clearly indicating she had done this many times in the past. This was very different to BLF where Ellen seemed to be in control of her life at the time. The scene in Ellen’s apartment was great. I think they did a great job of showing why Lilly did think she needed to be with someone to be truly happy, who wouldn’t think that if you were raised that way? The hug at the end of the scene was perfect. I know from experience that you are too angry with the person to hug them back and the hug is usually out of character for them when they are sober leading you to know that they are only doing it because they are drunk and they know they are doing something they shouldn’t be and most likely they will either not remember what they did/said when they are sober.
Overall a great episode and I look forward to next week’s continuing storyline.

Totally WOW! This episode was NOTHING like what I expected! It was much better! Of course it was a little "randomly convienient" that there just happened to be the murder confession from like 88 years ago that had NEVER been touched! But overall, the way they figured out everything and who they interviewed, went completely well and had a very good story line! OMG OMG OMG, I just cannot get over the Lilly-mama-drama! and then the b*tch was drinking at the end after Lilly tore into her house with all those groceries and her (VERY LONG ) hair flying all over the place trying to clean and yell at the same time! I just am so totally siked for next week! It looks so great! I wish it would hurry up! And Vera seems much happier now! I loved the jokes he made towards Lilly, and esp. the "one of many male detectives" comment he made to the teacher Hope seems to be coming out more in him with each ep! Hope it stays like this! ;D But TOTALLY, overall I loved this ep, it was definitly EXCELLENT!
