The cold case crew investigates the murder of Global World Airlines stewardess ALLY THURSTON, who allegedly disappeared without a trace in 1960, but whose remains were found in the rubble of a demolished Philadelphia hotel...
[ALLY THURSTON] 21 years old in 1960, bright-eyed, with an open face, girl-next-door beautiful, spunky, intelligent, stubborn, "the girl you want on your team, Ally is a small town New Jersey girl who's thrilled with the chance to see the world as a newly-minted Global World Airlines stewardess. Ally, like the rest of the world, initially has a starry-eyed view of the glamorous stewardess profession, but she's quickly disillusioned as she comes up against the sexism that prevents stews from having families, forces them to quit at age 32, and subjects them to the unwanted advances of lecherous pilots. A devoted friend to her roommate and best friend Helen Underwood, Ally (as Helen says years later) is not so much a young feminist as just a person who believes in fair play--but her determination to air the stews' grievances to the airlines leads to her murder...GUEST STAR (1)
[HELEN UNDERWOOD (1960)] Also 21 in 1960, with girl-next-door good looks but more sophisticated and curvy than Ally, Helen is also a new stewardess and Ally's best friend, having been roomates with her in training school. Recruited straight for the University of Colorado, Helen, like Ally (and the rest of the world) is in love with the idea of being a stewardess, with its implied excitement and glamour of world travel. More pragmatic than Ally, Helen becomes pregnant while on the job, has a botched abortion in Stockholm, and gratefully accepts Ally's discreet and devoted help as she recovers...GUEST STAR (1)
[HELEN UNDERWOOD (2008)] 69, her posture, composure and grooming more relaxed than in her stewardess days, well-spoken, Helen in 2008 is now a doctor, who is happy to speak with Valens and Miller about her old friend, fellow stew Ally Thurston. Helen alerts the cops to the existence of Ally's old high school boyfriend, Bert Walters, but neglects to tell them at first about her own troubles back then--her pregnancy, her botched abortion (which is the reason she's a doctor today), being nursed back to health by Ally. Helen tells the cops about Ally's attempts to get fair working conditions for the stews, thoughtfully pointing out that Ally wasn't a feminist--she just believed in fair play...GUEST STAR (8)
[GLORIA STONE (1960)] The Ideal Stewardess in 1960, slightly older than the new recruits (claiming to be 26 but in reality closer to 32, the mandatory retirement age for Global World Airlines stews), infinitely more poised, with crisp suit and perfect hair and makeup, Gloria is the supervisor for a group of stewardess trainees, including Ally and Helen. Quite capable of putting the new girls to work while she takes the easy duty (like reading to a little kid) on a flight, Gloria deflty handles the slightly drunk and lecherous Captain Rowland Hughes. Later, it's revealed that she and the married Hughes are having a discreet affair which Gloria desperately hopes will end with marriage. Gloria is outraged when Ally's fight for justice for the stews results in Hughes getting fired, and in a fit of anger she murderes Ally...GUEST STAR (10)
[GLORIA STONE (2008)] In her 70s in 2008, but still poised and beautiful, Gloria, once the Ideal Stewardess of the 1960s, is working the ticket counter of a low-rent local carrier, clearly disgusted with the current low-class state of air travel. Interviewed by Valens and Rush, Gloria talks freely of Ally Thurston, suggesting that they look to co-pilot Dean London for clues about her murder. Gloria doesn't volunteer the information that she herself was having an affair back then with married Captain Rowland Hughes, who was fired from Global World Airlines after Ally complained publicly about his mistreatment of the stews. Eventually, though, Gloria is forced to confess the murder of Ally Thurston...GUEST STAR (21)
[DEAN LONDON (1960)] 25 in 1960, handsome, charming, a decent guy, Dean's a First Officer with Global World Airlines, flying with Captain Rowland Hughes, when he first meets and falls for stew Ally Thurston. Though Dean himself is disgusted when Hughes' treatment of the stews, he doesn't say anything for fear of his own job, and Dean grows increasingly upset with Ally for making a fuss about Hughes and the other injustices she feels the stews endure. Genuinely in love with Ally, Dean is shocked and hurt when she refuses his offer of marriage...GUEST STAR (14) PROTOTYPE: DEAN MARTIN
[DEAN LONDON (2008)] Now 74, but still handsome, now the owner of his own plane, Dean is interviewed by Jeffries and Vera about his relationship with Ally in 1960. He downplays his feelings for Ally and chalks up their break-up to "different flights, different cities," but he points out that though he admired her spunk, not every did--notably Captain Rowland Hughes who, Dean points out, left Global Air for a new carrier the same week of Ally's disappearance. Eventually, Dean is called on the carpet by the cops for a fight he and Ally had when he learned that she was fighting for stews' rights with the airline--which he felt could cost him his promotion...GUEST STAR (25)
[CAPTAIN ROWLAND HUGHES (1960)] 35 in 1960 and handsome, a Global World Airlines captain, married but obviously enjoying the good life of a handsome jet setter, Hughes (who is slightly drunk when he boards the plane for Ally's first flight) thinks all the stews are there for his personal amusement, though he's having a long-term affair with stew supervisor Gloria Stone. Rowland gleefully plays a lascivious trick on Ally during her first flight, and is not happy when, in retaliation, she "accidentally" drops a bottle of liquor on him. He's the kind of guy who says things like, "You're a real tiger, aren't you?" when a disgusted Ally dumps the whiskey in his lap...GUEST STAR (15)
[ROWLAND HUGHES (2008)] Now in his 70s, Rowland is questioned about Ally by Valens, with whom he relaxes as he reminisces about the good ole days of the 1960s, when being an airline captain meant you could have any woman you wanted (regardless of how they felt about it). He downplays Ally's importance in his life, claiming he left Global World Airways for Pacific Air because the girls were better looking and "it was time for greener pastures." Somewhat cornered when Valens points out that Rowland was a regular at the hotel where Ally's body was found, Rowland suggests that if Valens wants to find out who Ally had trouble with, he should look to the women in her life... (32) 1 DAY GUEST STAR
[BERT WALTERS (1960)] 22 in 1960, Bert is Ally's old high school boyfriend, a blue collar, small town guy who's very upset about Ally's defection to stewardess training school. Desperately wanting Ally to come home and marry him, Bert embarrasses her at training school, but eventually leaves off in despair when he actually boards one of her flights but sees all the handsome, powerful men who are hitting on her... (11) CO-STAR
[BERT WALTERS (2008)] Now 69 years old, showing the tattered edges of a life not well lived, Bert is interviewed by Rush and Vera about his relationship with Ally. He gets nervous when the cops mention that her dead body was recently found, but though he swears he never saw her after he walked off one of her flights, he gives the cops a clue about another possible suspect... (12) 1 DAY GUEST STAR
[HARVEY DEWITT (1960)] 26, well heeled, meticulous and refined, Harvey is a businessman on Ally's first flight, the owner of a gem company called Brilliant Import/Export. He tries to interest Ally in a vacation in Spain with him, but in actuality he's looking for Ally to be one of his gem smuggling mules (he and two stews later do time for smuggling). He's disappointed when Ally sees through him... (15) CO-STAR
[HARVEY DEWITT (2008)] Now 75, Harvey is still imeccably tailored and none the worse for his long-ago stint in prison for gem smuggling. Somewhat condescending when he's questioned by Miller and Stillman about Ally, Harvey tells them that he tried to reel her in, but she wouldn't bite..sptv050769. (18) 1 DAY GUEST STAR
[LEW THURSTON] In his 80s but still vibrant, Lew is Ally's dad, who's questioned by Rush about his murdered daughter. He admits that he and his daughter, both stubborn people, sometimes went head to head, but he was obviously proud of her spunk. He tells Rush about Ally's old boyfriend, Bert, and grows nostalgic as he mentions that Ally got the travel bug from him, as he was in the infantry in WWII and helped liberate Paris... (6) 1 DAY GUEST STAR
[GIRL] Seen in 1960, this 13-15 year old girl wearing her Sunday best in anticipation of her first airplane flight sees the group of glamorous stews walking through the airport and rushes up to Ally to ask if she can take a picture with her... (1) CO-STAR
