With the wind blowing between the trees, Lilly stood there beside her father, while looking solemnly down at the grave of her beloved mother. Deep down, she missed hearing the sound of her voice; but also felt guilty that she was no longer there in her life.
I wrote this little piece, just after this episode had ended.
As whispers of Ellen’s last words, came in echoing silently through the heavens. Lilly stood there listening to the sound, wanting to see her face just one last time. She missed having her own mother, even though she had been put through misery in the past.
For Cooper, he had his own share of feelings towards; his ex. Some of it good, and some not so good, but Ellen did give him a beautiful daughter. He knew he was grateful for that; as his mind riddled with guilt over leaving Lilly when she was just six.
He knew he hadn’t been the best father, but still Lilly needed him now. Deep down, Cooper thought back to the time; when things were good between both him and Ellen. Except that her drinking always caused more commotion than anything.
“I’m sorry things were hard”, he said finally speaking. Lilly didn’t answer but instead continued to suck back the tears of sorrow; she still had felt deep down. Releasing a small breath, her mind could still hear the echoing of her voice.
Even Cooper could see that his daughter was hurting, though she kept it buried inside; he knew she was clearly upset. For that he couldn’t blame her, “I know that she loved you”.
Lilly sniffled back her emotions, even though she just wanted to wrap her arms around him; but found that she still couldn’t fathom doing that.
“Lilly”, hearing her name being called out. Somehow a vision of her on the table, just after being shot came flooding back. Lilly could hear people asking her questions, but then saw her mother standing there in sprit, hovering over her.
Then it flashed to her mother’s last days of being alive, how she treated her. If only she could have done something, to prevent losing her.
“It was my fault”, her voice spoke in tremors, “I just brushed it off, and I acted so nasty to her”.
Cooper felt his daughter’s grief over this, but right now he also wanted to hold her. She needed his comfort but even he had found it hard for him to do. She wasn’t the same person; he had left a long time ago.
“The day after she had died, I was shot”, trying hard to hold back the tears. Lilly knew she couldn’t, as they now spilled out from her eyes. Turning her head away, she shielded herself from letting him see her crying.
Nobody ever saw her cry; and they weren’t about to.
Cooper then moved closure, seeing that she was trying to avoid being seen. Very slowly, he then pulled her into an embrace. Lilly held on, while taking in his comfort. She had also missed him as well; but was glad that he was still alive.
While crying softly, her eyes closed while her tears fell upon him. For awhile, Lilly remained in his arms; feeling that special comfort and safety that came from him. Upon letting go; Cooper then nodded silently; signaling that he would follow her home.
As the bouquet of flowers, rested against the cool headstone; Ellen Rush stood there in sprit. Her eyes watched solemnly, as both her ex and Lilly walked slowly back to their respective cars. In the end, she was alone without anyone in the world to love or care about her.
Not even her daughter, whom she loved so much; knew the pain. Now Ellen knew she was now free and didn’t feel the pain any longer. As both Lilly and Cooper each looked back, they then saw a spirit of a familiar person, whom now had been departed out of this world.
Very slowly, with the breath of the wind, Ellen Rush then disappeared; into both the trees and the atmosphere. Looking upward, Lilly could see four birds flying over head; as the sun peeked its way out of the shadowy clouds.
Ellen Rush was free, and so was Lilly...
The End..
