GEEZ!!! This is difficult! There's so many songs from 1989! Naj, I like Martika's "Toy Soldiers" too because of the young female vocals and the song's allusion to war, but unfortunately it was already used in "The Sleepover" so it's chances in this episode are slim: I also like The Cure's "Lullaby", but again, this song was used in "The Sleepover". I'm going to place my bet that the episode's soundtrack will lean towards Alternative and Rock music: "So Alive" -- Love and Rockets "Welcome to the Jungle" -- Guns and Roses "Cult of Personality" -- Living Colour (because of the political bent, and I love this song!!) "Fire Woman" -- The Cult "Personal Jesus" -- Depeche Mode (The show has used so many Depeche Mode.... I'm sure they can't resist another one!) "Fascination Street" -- The Cure (Like Depeche Mode, the show has used music from The Cure a lot, so I'll bet they'll go for another one. I couldn't stand this song back in 1989, but listening to it now sure brings back memories!!) "Orinoco Flow" -- Enya (Even though the story is about a Russian immigrant, we can forget that Enya is Irish. Americans think of anything European as being from, well, all of Europe. ;D ) "A Little Respect" -- Erasure I have to toss in Soul II Soul's "Keep on Movin", because it's such an important song for the year. It brought back the more relaxed-tempo Soul music to mainstream pop. Finally, this song is late-80s and not really 1989, but I think the show will slip this one in for Mitchy and other Mets fans:

What about Madonna's " Like a Prayer", that came out in 1989.

Then I'm going to go with Martika's "Love Thy Will Be Done". It would be great as a closing song but it probably exceeds their time limit.

I had some mixed feelings about using "True Colors" by Cindi Lauper because I'd already used it in a story, but it fit here well, and they've reused songs before (most recently in "One Small Step"), so it's not a big deal.

I liked Nadia's voice far more than either Tom Petty's or Cyndi Lauper's. Also, that Verdi aria she superimposed over "Free Fallin'" was fantastically done. Kudos, Michael Levine.

The ending song " True Colors" was fitting. Really didn't get into the music though

Okay, guys, I'm putting on my Music Geek hat for a moment...
The opera excerpt (it's a chorus, technically, not an aria) that Nadia superimposes over "Free Fallin'," is "Va' pensiero," from the third act of Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Nabucco." "Nabucco" tells the story of the exile of the Hebrews to Babylon after the destruction of the Temple. In this scene, the Hebrews are standing on the banks of the Euphrates singing of their beloved homeland.
Here are the lyrics Nadia sang (translated from Italian):
Fly, thought, on wings of gold; go settle upon the slopes and the hills, where, soft and mild, the sweet airs of our native land smell fragrant!
Oh, my country so lovely and lost! Oh, remembrance so dear and so fraught with despair!
Yet further proof that the music people on this show are freakin' geniuses; they got a mention of gold AND the longing for one's homeland.

Okay, guys, I'm putting on my Music Geek hat for a moment... That's too cool, CelloGal! I'm so happy we've got a music guru in the house! Also, wasn't that a cello in the music teacher's room? I'm talking about the scene close to the end where Nadia was interrupted by her father barging in at the school. Seeing that instrument there gave me my second biggest laugh of the night (the first being the opening scenes where it was revealed Vera was the Russian-speaking cop at the front desk).

It's not often that my occupation and my fangirliness get to intersect. Unfortunately, it wasn't a cello in the classroom, it was a double bass. It's like a cello, only bigger. Still really nice to see, though!

*fdl* Aww thanks, Boxman, you're so thoughtful! I think, on reflection, I'm kinda glad they went with True Colours although I actually winced because it's being used for an advert in the UK atm, so not really a blast from the past for me, more like "Oh not that ****** song again!"
Otherwise, loved the music - thanks for the technical explanation, cellogal, that scene is even more poignant to watch now.

Okay, guys, I'm putting on my Music Geek hat for a moment... Phew, so I wasn't the only one to notice it. The "Habenera" of Bizet's opera Carmen, sung be Nadia at the beginning, is a classic, who hasn't heard that tune before. Found that choice interesting too, Carmen, a woman loving her freedom and free life, getting killed in the end... (though by a scorned lover)
