PART 7 – WHO AM I?
“Ok, let’s start right away,” Mark said.
“Right.” Jacob said. “Well, that fateful day Catherine died, I remember she came to talk to me, as we were good friends and I was the one that introduced her to Paul.”
“About what?” Lilly asked.
“Belinda.” Jacob answered.

These are the things I can do without
Come on

In violent times
You shouldn't have to sell your soul
In black and white
They really really ought to know
Those one track minds
That took you for a working boy
Kiss them goodbye
You shouldn't have to jump for joy
You shouldn't have to...
Shout
Shout
Let it all out
These are the things I can do without
Come on
I'm talking to you
Come on
They gave you life
And in return you gave them Hell
As cold as ice
I hope we live to tell the tale.
I hope we live to...

“She rang the door insistently, and so I went to open. She was frantic. She told me that she had a fight with Belinda, and that the latter said that if she couldn’t have Paul, then no-one else would. And the chilling thing was, it was believable. I could picture her saying those things.”

“But if you knew already how your wife was,” Mark asked, “why did you marry her?”
“She’s changed a lot since those days,” Jacob answered, “but right then, that’s how she was. Chilling to the bone.”
“You sure that it’s how she was?” Lilly asked. “She has practically laid the whole blame on you, her beloved husband.”
“Anyway,” George asked, “are you sure you’re not just accusing each other out of resentment?”
“Well, I can’t speak for her, but if you think I’m playing the blame game, you’re dead wrong. I’m really sad about saying those things about my wife, but if she did kill Paul, I want her to rot in prison. Paul and I were brothers, twins, best friends. Didn’t you know I had a deep depression right after my bro died?”
The guys could do nothing but nod. It was in the file.
“Coming back to the day Paul was killed, I remember that…

You know that it would be untrue
you know that I would be a liar
if I was to say to you
baby we couldn't get much higher.
Come on baby light my fire.
Come on baby light my fire.
Try to set the night on fire.
The time for hesitation is through
no time to wallow in the mire
try now we can only lose
and our love become a funeral pyre.
Come on baby light my fire.

Paul and I were talking, well, he was talking. He was sick and tired of having to fear Belinda, and said he knew she had killed Cath. He also said he was going to the police, and in the middle of his talk I realized I had to go, or else I’d be missing class. He said he was going to stay there. He needed to think.”

“Why exactly at the station?” Scotty asked. “Why didn’t you go somewhere else, like in a cafè, or in a fast-food?”
“It has always been a habit of ours, walk to and into the nearest station whenever we needed to just stay away for a while.” Jacob answered. “Watching the trains go by had helped us in really tough times.”
“Oh.” Lilly said, and then excused herself to another room as her cellphone began vibrating.
When she returned, she looked really surprised.
“Thank you, Mr. Rowles,” she said, “you have been a really great help.”
“Hope I was.” Jacob answered and then left the room.
“So Lilly?” Scotty asked. “What’s wrong?”
“The CSI teams both here and in Philly made the DNA tests…”
“And?” Mark asked, grimacing at the possibilities that were going through his mind.
“The Rowles who died in Boston turned out to be Jacob.”
“WHAT?” The other investigators said.
“This implies…” Mark said.
“Right, that the guy we just interrogated was actually Paul Rowles.” Lilly completed the thought.
“Well, he deserves an Academy Award, because he behaves just like the real Jacob Rowles.” Mabry said. “Well, if he had grown up.”
“Probably the deep depression and the shock play a game in this.” George said.
“Who knows?” Lilly said. “But I think we need to re-interrogate Paul. Or better, to get Paul out of his ‘herm’.”
