Opening Song: Better Days by the Goo Goo Dolls
We see a building that’s on fire, as a woman that will be known as Priscilla Chapin stands outside, wearing a brown bubble coat. She is panicking in regards to her son; Max. Then a firefighter comes out holding a small body as she begins to cry uncontrollably. The camera then pans upwards seeing the rest of the building burning up in flames, while water is being sprayed in an effort to contain and put out the fire.
Next we see a file containing Max’s photo, into a filing cabinet labeled: Accidental Deaths.
Before it takes us to the present day where an exterior shot of the front of a jail is being seen. Inside Rush and Miller are walking together talking about a woman who went crazy in Rittenhouse square, as was an ex junkie claiming that she saw her son in the park this morning.
Rush thinks it’s going to be a waste of time, but when Millers then questions her about it she is informed that Rush was raised by one; that has no illusions left. From up ahead we see Eddie Saccardo whom we haven’t seen since Bad Reputation, episode 5X16 who runs a narcotics taskforce. When he comes out both him and Rush agree that this is a waste of time, interviewing Priscilla.
Somehow Priscilla ends up convincing Rush to reopen her son’s case, after shouting from behind bars about what her son looks like; birthmarks and hair.
CUT TO CREDITS
Exterior of Philly PD is shown, before panning inside where we see Rush, Stillman and Vera walking in the halls speaking about the case. Rush informs them that the kids that were seen at the park were too old: eight and twelve. Upon entering we learn by the time that PFD got 252 Baker Street under control the place crumbled from the fire, everyone got out except for Max.
Priscilla told police that she left Max alone for ten minutes, that a neighbor had the baby monitor. We also find out that she has possession charges: 01, 02 & 04 and was a teenage runaway that avoiding juvenile prison by doing rehab.
Just then Louie comes in with some new info on the fire, which informs them that the source of the fire came from the stove, but the there was already a fire burning in Max’s room before the explosion.
In the next scene, Valens and Jefferies are both speaking with the firefighter that had found Max’s body that night.
The firefighter then recalls the night of the fire; as we then flash into the inside of the burning apartment building, back in 2005. Flames are shooting up all over the place, as the camera looks down to see broken glass scattered on the ground. He then spots the baby’s body in a blanket as his eyes close with the fire serving as a backdrop.
In the present day, as the firefighter informs the detectives that this baby was loved; judging from where he had slept. Valens then questions him about the glass, that it should have blown out onto the fire escape than in, as he hears the other man tells them about almost cutting himself while trying to get the kid out thus now making this case a Homicide.
Back in the bullpen, Stillman informs Miller that the owner got 9,250 from the insurance after the place had burned down. Victor Martinez has two condos in Mt. Airy and a high rise downtown, but Miller discovers that Priscilla had filed a complaint against him stating that the heat wasn’t working in the dead of winter. This could bring a hefty fine or worse be sued by the city.
Next we see Rush entering the interrogation room, where both Victor Martinez and Valens are seated. However Victor informs them that Priscilla is the main reason why his place got burnt to a crisp, but goes on to say that it was her lifestyle.
Flashback- The Good Life- I am an Island
Victor is changing a light bulb, while Priscilla carries Max in a laundry basket who is crying rather loudly. She puts the coins into the dryer in hopes that he would eventually fall asleep. While she is trying to calm her son down a younger man enters from behind while Victor turns out the light bulb as if he was trying to avoid this guy.
Priscilla then picks up Max into his arms telling the man; Franklin that she had a baby and will get a part time job so that she could pay him back. She then goes on to tell him that she’s clean now because of being a mom. Franklin tells her that he needs cash in three days or then he’ll have to be creative while touching the baby’s nose before leaving.
In the present day, Valens asks why Victor didn’t get involved but doesn’t realized until Rush states that Franklin Palmer is a big time crack and Heroin Dealer but he’s now in jail now. This now prompts both Jefferies and Vera to take a trip out to have a talk with Franklin; whose informs them that Priscilla’s reality was bleak.
Wolf Parade- Modern World
In a flashback at a fast food joint, Franklin is laughing with some of his buddies when he notices Priscilla standing at the front counter looking extremely bleak. Camera zooms up into her eyes then onto her name badge before we briefly see through her eyes, as a guy in a chicken suit wipes off the sweat from his face.
We then see angry customers in from of Priscilla before the camera then shows that her hands are shaking due to her body being weaned off the drugs. A woman then appears asks if she had seen Ellis, as Priscilla begins to grow bothered by this woman.
The woman Chantelle is informed by Priscilla that Ellis is no good. That Ellis needs to own up to his responsibilities about being a father, that he will help both Priscilla and Max. Chantelle then attacks Priscilla before her boss fires her. In the present day when Franklyn is questions about both Chantelle and Ellis he tells the detectives that he doesn’t know.
In Priscilla’s apartment, both Rush and Miller stand there as Priscilla tells them that Ellis was broke, that he never met Max. Upon sitting down she begins telling them a story about the night that Max was born stating that he was the first person that she could ever love. With this said we now see the exterior of headquarters before we see Rush sitting at her desk.
She looks up when Eddie Saccardo comes by, but he informs her that Ellis Smith sometimes checks into Maloney Smith center to make a half ass attempt to get clean. However he then asks why she is working this job: about addict or Addicts with kids or is it the combo platter by which makes Rush laugh softly before watching him walking away.
At the Maloney Smith Center, a woman Lois tells Vera and Valens that for addicts that serving this addiction is more important than the life of their own child.
Keane- Bed shaped
Max cries out as Priscilla sits there looking at him, before telling Ellis that she’s giving him baby aspirin because she lost her job but it’s now working. She wants to take him to the doctor, before Ellis asks why she’s laying it all on him. After Lois tells Ellis that his visiting hours are over she then sits down looking at Max in his carrier.
Priscilla tells her that she wishes that someone had told her how hard it was going to be but didn’t as the flashback ends there.
Later Stillman, Rush and Vera are standing in the bullpen speaking about Priscilla when Vera tells them that he had the coroner take a look at the photos stating that the bones are showing signs of calcifications: healing that Max may have been abused.
This then Prompts Rush and Valens to head on over to Priscilla’s apartment as the landlord opens the door to her apartment for them. She hasn’t reported to work in two days probably under a bridge with Ellis now before Rush spots a stuffed animal lying on the kitchen table, telling Valens that Priscilla has just recently bought it.
While looking around they find an envelope with checks from someone on the mainline, which thus turns out to be Priscilla’s parents. There Miller and Jefferies are speaking to the parents; as her mother says that they put her in rehab when she was a senior in high school but tried it again until she ran away.
After showing them out, Miller stops to speak with Mrs. Chapin about Priscilla. In which we discover that she never cashes in the checks that they had sent her, but doesn’t know where she is because they had turned her away before the fire.
Dave Matthews Band- Stay or Leave
Mrs. Chapin is looking at a strip of pictures that contain Priscilla holding Max; who now asks to borrow some money so that she could take him to a good doctor and move into a better apartment. Her father then states that there is no realistic hope for her or her child, and tries to persuade her into give up Max for adoption.
Priscilla then tells them that they can keep their money, and that she’s keep her son before walking out of the house. In the present day, Mrs. Chapin tells Miller where some of the places were that Priscilla used to go to use drugs but says if they find Priscilla that she can come home without any strings attached.
In a placed filled with homeless, a car drives up as Rush and Valens begin showing a picture of Ellis around before noticing that Saccardo already has him. Getting closer he then shoves his face into his car before Rush makes him stop before asking Ellis where Priscilla is; but he states that he doesn’t know where she is.
On the night of fire Ellis was with Priscilla but had no clue that she had left Max alone that night. He then goes on to state that he found her in a bad way that night, and that he’s not the right guy to make good choices.
Flashback to 2005
We see a deserted street, as Ellis pulls the car up to the curb before seeing Priscilla walking by. Once in the car they begin talking; before Priscilla tells him that maybe her parents are right that Max would be better with someone else. Then Ellis shows her a vial of the drug as Priscilla stares out into space, before she shakes her head no and leaves the car.
Back in the lot, Ellis tells the detectives that Priscilla was strong and that he has an alibi that his sister had him picked up for stealing a car; thus spending the whole night in jail. Just then Valens phone rings as he turns away to answer it while Rush asks him if he has an idea where Priscilla might be hanging out to which Ellis replies” The Flower Mart by the port” but goes on to state that she loved that kid as tough as it is that Rush wouldn’t know about.
Somehow Valens phone call now reveals them returning to headquarters listening to Vera speaking about how an eight month old like Max would have had teeth, that they survived same as bone.
In the photo Rush states that there weren’t any on the jaw line which Vera then states that the soft spot on top of the head closes up from the time that they are born until they are two. The skull in the picture frontal lobe measures 2 by 2 centimeters too big for an eight month old, that the usual size is for a four month old. The squad now realizes that there was another kid that had died in the fire, and that this body isn’t that of Max Chapin.
In the next scene, we see Saccardo seated while playing with his phone. Rush walks by telling him that he can’t have Ellis yet; but now we discover that whoever started the fire wanted to kidnap Max. Just then Jefferies informs them that the baby was brought down to St. Paul’s on February 11th 05, with severe bleeding and died the next day. After he had been brought down to the morgue he then vanished on the day of the fire.
Stillman then sends Jefferies and Miller to St. Paul’s to find out who was on staff in ICU and at the Morgue while Rush and Saccardo try the flower mart.
At the flower Mart, they find Priscilla sitting at one of the chairs there. However when Saccardo reveals his own past with drug use it’s when she begins opening up about why she had come here. It was right after Max had been born when the heat first went out, the first place that Priscilla had ever felt at home. Now she wonders why she broke her many promises to her son, but reveals that she had told also told Lois the woman had the center about this place.
This the prompts a big investigation as Rush and Valens walk into the house before discovering that the two had in fact kidnapped Max Chapin together. They had renamed him Isaac but the Lois tells them that she seen so many mother that can do it, that doesn’t care. That day she met Priscilla she had to have another D &C (Miscarriage) it wasn’t fair to her that she couldn’t have any kids.
Flashes of her husband, turning on the gas stove in Priscilla’s apartment; as his voiceover states that she couldn’t take care of him. When Rush mentions Max’s room that it was looking into a room filled with the rainbow, but the husband goes on to state that it’s dirty not fit for an infant.
Flashback of Lois and her husband with Max at their home; as they notice his shirt stating: My Mommy loves me.
Nickleback- Far Away
Rush and Valens are arresting the couple before leading them away, next we see Mr.& Mrs. Chapin through a mirror before photos of both Priscilla and Max are sitting in frames on a table. In the warehouse Jefferies is filing Baby John Doe’s box away while Stillman tosses out an empty box that would have been Max’s. The camera the zooms up as the box is now being placed into garbage can, before scanning the box of the unknown baby boy.
At the flower mart, Priscilla stands there holding an orange flower in her hand before looking back at Saccardo. Just then a car pulls up as Valens gets out before opening up a passenger side door, while Max now four years old gets out. Rush bends down to his size before pointing out to presumably Priscilla as Max starts to slowly walk closer.
We then see him standing there as Priscilla then bends down smiling, while extending the flower to him. For a moment we see a flashback of them in 2005, before flashing forward to the present day. The camera then captures Lilly as she takes in a short breath while looking straight at Saccardo who’s still standing there.
He looks at her for a couple of seconds, could it be love we as viewers aren’t certain of but we do know that Saccardo does in fact care for her. While he is walking away Saccardo briefly turns around to take one more look over at Rush whom clearly he has feelings for. As Rush lets out a breath in a possibility that she does in fact like him as well before looking upward as a sign of hope or sign of a future relationship to come her away.
This now concludes the Season Finale of Season 5 which then ends with rest of the credits rolling
