Hey there. I know, brand new to the board and I'm already whining about something. Sorry!
I notice you have 196 fanfics posted. That's awesome! And I'd love to check them out.
But, I was wondering....is there anyway someone could start an index for the fanfiction board that categorizes the fics? I think a great way to categorize would be first by character and then by "rating" if you even have ratings on this board. I haven't been around enough to know if you guys would even allow mature content fics, not that those are the ones I'm looking for!
So, for example:
Character/genre/Rating (I'm not intelligent enough to create the table *facepalm*) Scotty/Lilly - Romance - PG (or whatever rating you use) Vera/Lilly - Gen - G
I would be willing to do this if no one else is. And maybe I would include the title, which would also be a link to the fic.
I love fanfic, but there's characters/situations I'm just not that interested in and I'd love an easy way to navigate the fics on the board so I could find the ones I'm most interested in.
Thoughts?

Well, I can categorize mine for you, if that'll help...

One-Shots
"The Middle"--Scotty/Vera---Angst/Humor---PG-13 "Let It Snow"---Scotty/Lilly--Friendship/Humor---PG "Just Kickin' It"---Scotty/Elisa---Romance/Humor---PG

Hey there. I know, brand new to the board and I'm already whining about something. Sorry! Not a whine, a suggestion and that's OK. It's a good idea but having given it very brief thought it looks like the implementation could be a little complicated. From yours and cellogal's posts it is clear that it could get very complex, very quickly. I don't follow the fanfics though so I may not be best person to judge. Individual characters would probably not be workable because the vast majority of stories include more than one of the main characters. Categorising by "shipper" pairings might work, though not everything fits into those so additional categories would be required, which is OK. Going by style (eg. Romance/Humor/Angst) doesn't strike me as easy either, because most good stories would include all of them and more. A separate R rating section might be a good idea. It would save me wading through the rest If we can come up with a simple scheme to categorise the stories then I don't see why we can't implement it. Some stories may want to be included in more than one category, though it is important that a story doesn't appear in too many or it would negate the point of the index. A few suggestions for categories anyone? I would say there shouldn't be more than 6 in total.

If we did it the way cellogal did it, I think it would actually be pretty simple. We need character names. At least, I do. There are characters that I just don't really care that much about in terms of fic. So that would need to be a criteria. Categories: - Title (which is also a link to the fic)
- 1 or 2 main characters (maybe 3 if there's any of that OT3 going on here, I don't know)
- Genre
- General - fics that are NOT based on romance, drama, or an actual cold case. Friendship fics fit well here.
- Romance
- Smut - again, if this stuff isn't posted here, we can just get rid of the category. I haven't read any of the fics yet, so I don't know what kind we have
- Action
- Angst
- Humor
- Crime
- Rating
This is a good idea for the board, in general, but really, it is just a selfish wish so that I can get to the Vera fics the fastest. *laugh* I am more than willing to take up this project. Since it's me bringing it up. If I end up doing this, I'll most likely bug the authors so I don't have to read every single fic in order to categorize. That would take a lot of time. Some fics do fit into more than category, but there is generally a dominant genre. A Romance fic can have a funnly part, but if the plot is driven by the romance between two characters, it is a romance fic.

Sorry, been a little too busy to look at this recently.
I was thinking more along the lines of a simpler list where as you guys are going for more a table. Tables are more complicated to create and administer. Ideally there'd be a database behind it so that sorting and filtering would be easy, but that is not an option here.
One thing I would suggest as an extra element would be "author".

Hey guys, I was looking through the code database at Proboards Support and found one that might help you. I set it up over at my test board for you guys to look at and see if it's right for you. Clicky. It's a very easy set up: There would have to be a set of categories determined, but you could put a fic in more than one category. I'd be happy to set up the code for you guys if you're interested.

Just so people know, this has been realized in the Fanfiction Forum. The code was very complicated to get tweaked for what we needed, which is why it took so long. There are a couple of kinks, but all of the stories currently posted in the fanfiction board are now archived.

There are a few that are labled T- that I have seen on fanfiction.net, that are posted here that isn't suitable for minors. Are we keeping these as well?

Hello there. Well, I'm brand new to the board (this is actually my first post) and just thought I'd post my two cents worth. I have my own board (thought it doesn't get a whole lot of traffic) and on it I have the major fan fictions divided into a couple of categories. First, I have the canon fics for those who may not read or like AU. Under this I have a separate thread for each season. Under the AU thread they are all pretty much listed together. As I read in an earlier post, most stories center around all (or nearly all) of the cast members, sometimes with one of them being the focal point of the story. I also have a thread for miscellaneous stories since some stories can be about what happened before the show started or aren't set in a particular season. Most of what I've written to date has been Charmed fan fiction. However, I've noticed that Charmed is beginning to wane in its interest and have decided to concentrate on a new show. I've chosen Cold Case because I love this show and I have several ideas for stories for it. I've all ready written 4 and am currently working on my 5th one. I plan to write a great many more before I'm through. (My goal is to have at least one fan fiction for each episode that is aired.) Anyway, I plan to start posting my stories very soon and hope everyone will enjoy them. And I can take constructive criticism (flamers will be ignored) so if you see a problem with one of my stories don't hesitate to speak up. Of course, if you want to tell me that you liked it and why you liked it, I won't turn those down either. Jerry

If you'll head on over to the actual area where our fanfiction is stored, you'll note that we actually have a coded archive in place, which in effect does all the sorting for us, so we don't need multiple threads.
