LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Tough-guy special agent Jack Malone of "Without a Trace" and detective Lilly Rush of "Cold Case" will soon be reincarnated in the global TV marketplace in local versions of both CBS dramas.
Until a few years ago, hit U.S. dramas were seriously challenged internationally by homegrown series. But the pace of local production has been slowed by high production costs. For foreign producers and broadcasters, it often makes more economic sense to develop a local version of an existing hit. "Law & Order" creator Dick Wolf, for example, is developing a French version of the crime show spinoff "Criminal Intent."
The format rights to "Without a Trace" and "Cold Case" are being sold by Warner Bros. International Television, which hopes to set up local versions in "one or two" of the larger markets to begin with, said studio president Jeffrey Schlesinger.
"Procedural shows are working well around the world," he added in an interview. "We are taking them out (for global formatting) at a time when broadcasters are looking to piggyback locally on already existing successful shows with proven story structure and character."
Both shows are co-produced by Warner Bros.-based production house Jerry Bruckheimer Television. While the ubiquitous producer will not supervise the international productions, his blue-chip reputation will be a major attraction for broadcasters around the world, said Schlesinger.
"Without a Trace," starring Anthony LaPaglia, centres on the New York Missing Persons Squad of the FBI. Kathryn Morris stars in "Cold Case," about a dedicated Philadelphia cop who solves long-forgotten crimes.
