I had just finished watching "Out of the Ashes". There are no words to describe this movie, only that it was very sad and a beautiful portrayal of the Holocaust. This is a must see film. Go rent it!!!
Synopsis: This true-life account of Hungarian gynecologist Dr. Gisella Perl(Christine Lahti), who survived the Holocaust by working as the head of the women's infirmary at Auschwitz- a fact that lands her in serious political trouble when she emigrates to the United States in 1946.
I loved this movie from a movie-making perspective. Some key points that the director did really well:
* In the beginning when they board the train, the people know that they are being taken to Poland, but they do not know that they are being taken to their deaths. Most of them are herded onto the train which gets locked once they are aboard showing the transformation from human to animals.
* Once at the concentration camp, there is a German Nazi who we find out is suppose to be the infamous Dr. Mengele later on. He is whistling and choosing who are able to work and who goes to the gas chambers. It really does portray beautifully the "German" attitude towards the Jews during this time.
* We find Dr. Perl and other women are being "decontaminated" at the concentration camp. We see their hair being cut short and they're stripped naked(very graphic, but symbolic scene) and forced to shower themselves. After showering, they are to be tattoed their assigned numbers.
* After Dr. Perl re-tells this account to the INS, she goes into the washroom and tries to wipe off her terrible past(the numbers).
All-in-All, IT WAS A VERY GOOD MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Perhaps one of the great movies of all-time. I cannot believe that this was ONLY a tv movie on Showtime.
