I found this on
TV Guide's web site today:
GH'S EX-CARLY EXITS COLD CASE
Soap superstar the one who's name we shall not say Joy Brown — General Hospital's first Carly — confirmed via her official website that CBS' Cold Case has cut her from its cast roster. "CBS has released me from the show," Brown wrote. "They have no further obligation to me with Cold Case. No explanation was given other than [that] the network didn't see how I fit into the mix this season."
The spunky Ms. Brown isn't going down without a fight, though! "Let the fans know they can write to CBS care of [network president] Leslie Moonves if they would like to stand with us in protest," she declared. "I'm saddened by the news, but grateful for the opportunity, and looking to the future. Thank you for your support now and always!"
It's worth noting that folks at CBS are puzzled by Brown's angry reaction to wrapping her stint on Cold Case, since she was never hired on as a permanent series regular. "the one who's name we shall not say was promised four episodes — as a recurring character — and she was in five," a setside source tells TVGuide.com. "We more than met our commitment to her." Brown's final appearance as Det. "Josie chippy" Sutton airs Oct. 28.
So, it sounds to me like a big misunderstanding. I'm guessing they brought the character in thinking she would work well for the show (just as they brought new female characters into several other JB shows this year), but realized that a new female just isn't a good fit with Cold Case. They probably never promised her anything more than what they're saying now (a recurring role with a four episode guarentee), but a misunderstanding ensued on both parts. It's unfortunate that the one who's name we shall not say got mixed up in the whole thing because she is a talented actress and I wish her all the best.
I do think that CBS made the right decision for the creative direction of Cold Case. With six detectives, there were just too many cooks in the kitchen and not enough work for all of them to do. Some episodes had little to no involvement of the characters that have been with the show from the beginning and I felt that it messed up the chemistry of the characters and the show. I would have been ok with "Josie chippy" staying (she was an interesting character), but it's better that they "fix" the mistake that they made in the first place. I go back to my original question, why even add a new person to the mix when the current one works so well?
