I finally got around to tracking down a DVD of this movie, and I'm very glad I did.
A quick recap. Bobby Cellini (Scott Bakula) is an actor on the downward slope of his career. He's still well known but is unlikely to have a major role again. After a failed, and rather desperate attempt, to get a part and some publicity fails he drives off into the hills. He has an accident and is assumed dead. When he manages to get back to Hollywood he finds they are making a movie of his life and decides to try and get the lead role. Who better to play Bobby than Bobby? He pretends to be another person. Kathryn plays Chelsea, Bobby's ex-wife, who is directing the movie.
A very enjoyable little film. What was potentially quite a heavy subject played, not so much for laughs, but in a light way. I do have a couple of issues with it however. I'll get those out the way first.
The plot synopsis on the DVD, a couple of pages of text, says that Bobby had a car crash. Clearly he didn't, but it leads me to an example of my first issue: the missing bits.
So, Bobby's fallen down a hill and is rescued by Native Americans. Fine, it's a convenient way of explaining his good health and being gone for weeks. But, little is made of Bobby's actual disappearance and the affect it has on people. I realise that the film is not about Bobby being missing but what he does when he returns, however, a bit more emphasis on that would have increased the emotional impact of his rise from the dead. Kathryn plays Bobby's ex-wife Chelsea, who is directing the movie of Bobby's life.
I also felt that certain areas needed to be fleshed out more (no, I'm not talking about
scenes for Kathryn, though now you mention it...
). The initial run-through of the restaurant scene (where Buck was not ignoring the wife character enough) came across as very unnatural because it was done so to make a plot point. They needed to get across that Chelsea (Kathryn) knew about Bobby's affair. Again, OK, but it was not clear to me why Bobby was so shocked on hearing Chelsea say that she knew. For all we know Bobby was a faithful husband, albeit a selfish, self-publicising one, and it was discovering that Chelsea thought he did that disturbed him so much. Maybe I'm simple, but I wanted all that made clearer. He could have spoken to his friend about it later.
On IMDb there is a comment by someone that the casting of the woman playing Chelsea in the movie they are making is very good. This opninion is based on the apparent similarity between the her and Kathryn. I don't see it myself. Which brings up another point. I was surprised that Chelsea (Kathryn), as the director, didn't have an issue with the actress playing her being so completely unlike her. Off-set she was a real... lets say bimbo. She got the part based on some successful "horizontal auditioning", you'd think that Chelsea would show more animosity towards her for that.
Scott Bakula did a good job, he always seems to be very watchable.
Amazingly this was Anthony "Tony" Alda's one and only attempt at writing and directing. I wonder why.
Now to the really good stuff: Kathryn
As I've said before, I don't consider myself a good judge of acting. Unless it's really bad I don't tend to notice it. That said, I think Kathryn did a great job here. Not that that will be a surprise to anyone here. I don't know if it is the roles Kathryn gets or just the way she plays them, but yet again she covers, in a believeable way, the emotional range more than any of the other cast members. Doing the best she can with what she's given or chosen for the job because she can do that? Either way it is to her great credit.
Everyone else has mentioned
the hair so I will. I loved it. The short spikey cut really suits Kathryn. She looks sooooo good throughout the film, of course
The smilie was very much in evidence, which is always good news ;D
Favourite scene? It has to the party scene. Cute beyond words. The whole "he loved to make me giggle" part certainly struck a chord with this fan, it could have been written with me in mind
A good fun movie with lots of Kathryn in it. Well worth a purchase.
Here are a load of screencaps of the lovely Ms Morris. The quality is rather poor unfortunately. I will be adding movie clips to my podcast over the next few days.
