This case sort of covered the recent nightclub fires that seemed to occur all over the place. But the real meat of the case was most likely lifted from the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan incident of 1994. Tonya got some guys to whack Nancy Kerrigan in the leg to put her out of commission in the 1994 Winter Olympics. In the Cold Case episode, Doreen got the killer to do the same to Benny. The problem was he killed Benny when the plan went wrong.

There's been a bunch of these "Nightclub Fires" over the years. I like your connection to the Tanya Harding incident, R2K.

Finally! Thank you. Ever since I saw this episode, I was sure the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan incident was an inspiration, more so than the tragic nightclub fires. Everytime I read a description of this episode, they never mention the "Tonya/Nancy" thing; glad someone else noticed the smilarities.
