*If* Lilly's mom ever does appear on the show, how do you think she will look like. How old do you think she'll be? How will she act? ~Naj

I think she'll look haggard for her age too, drink and smoking does that to you. I don't think she'll be really old cos I can imagine that she had Lilly when she was young. As for looks, hmmm I'm not sure? I can't really guess how she will be with Lilly either??? She could either be really horrible and mean to her . Or she could be very sorry for the past. It really depends upon the circumstances under which she arrives *if she ever does.* I do however imagine that Lilly's mum always prefered Christina to Lilly, don't know why though??

I think she'll look older than she really is, very slim like Lilly and blonde. And, of course, has a smoking and drinking problems. I'm wondering how Lilly is gonna react if her mom ever appear: I guess she won't be very pleasant...

was it just me or wasn't Lilly looking after her mother in the ep after churchgoing people Vera asked her if she was looking after her mother that day and she said that her sister was tonight??is that a big continuity flaw or was she just lying to Vera?

Yeah it was in Sherry Darlin where she said she was doing the 'Pharmacy run.' Haven't heward anything since!!! Maybe she does that for her mom, but that doesn't mean her mom is nice to her. Lilly's always looked after her mom despite her not caring for her properly as she was growing. Lilly might still do it out of habit?

I get the feeling Lilly's mom IS "nice" to her. Not in the responsible sense, but in the sense she probably doesn't yell or insult her or anything. She's probably nice as can be and cries and carries on about her past and how regretful it all is... but without doing anything to change it. I really hope I don't insult anyone out there by this generalization, but that's the typical attitude of an alcoholic. Some are b*tchy but lots are sweet people, they just don't have any sense of responsibility. As Lilly mentioned in "Revenge", after she'd cleaned up her mom and put her to bed, her mom would always reach out lovingly, and that was enough for her...
I believe that's why she's still looking after her, in spite of everything...

Good point DF!! ;D That must make things more painful for lilly if her mother is nice and says she sorry and regretful all the time. If she was mean to Lilly it would be easier for her to hate her mother.

How do we know her mom is nice? I guess she could have softened with age. The fact that Lilly has to go out and get her medication is really odd. It makes it sound like her mom is 75-80 years old when she has to be young to have two children their age. Maybe my assumption is wrong that her mom was pregnant very young and on welfare. I think it would be interesting to be 35 and have a mom about 53 years old. My mom was 30 years older than me.

My mom is 30 years older than me too. It's a totally different relationship, I guess, to have a young mom. If Lilly's hadn't been so messed up, they probably woulda been friends.
Years of heavy alcohol intake can give you degenerative nervous system diseases, thus making you old and helpless and senile before your time. I have an idea that's the "sickness" Lilly was talking about in that first season ep (she said something like "she's not sick in her body"... don't remember the exact words).

I imagine Lil's mom to be phisically a lot like Lilly (facial expressions, etc). I'd guess she's no older than 55 (guessing Lil's age as 35, I believe Ellen had her when she was about 20 years old). However, she looks a lot older than that, because of all the drinking, the wildness of her younger years, and her disease. As for how she treats Lilly, I see Ellen as dependant of Lilly - but she doesn't admit it, and doesn't acknowledge all that Lilly has done for her.

Not that I think this is the case, but what if her mother is the opposite of what we expect? What if she cleaned up and moved on only to find all her bad years catching up to her. Now she's sick, but not as weathered and down-in-the-dumps as we expect. That would certainly be a twist, and not the first. I remember a lot of us were surprised to find out why Lilly disliked Chris so much. We get all of this from Lilly, but we aren't sure how much of it is what we expect because the character is flawed. I love that about her and this show. It manages to catch us off guard and keep us on our toes!

I bumped this post from October 2005 now that Ellen has appeared on the show. I think this current Ellen conflicts with those statements made by Lilly that she had to go out and get her meds cause Christina was MIA. The season 1 inference of Ellen made her seem old and feeble while now we see someone who is live and renewed. I got the impression Ellen and Lilly hadn't seen each other in years. More than two. :smile10:

I was just re-watching the Ellen scenes in Beautiful Little Fool. The relationship between Lilly & Ellen is so complicated! At times Lilly seems like the mother, and Ellen acts childish. It does seem like the writers decided to change direction a little bit. If Ellen was somewhat of an invalid in Season 1, she's certainly better now (When Lilly calls her an alcoholic, she fires back "recovering!")
It was a good move, IMHO... Ellen has recovered enough to find love and gets to pose to Lilly an epic question that no one has ever really asked her:
Ellen: I just want one night of happiness with you there. Is it so wrong? Have I done so badly that I can't have that? Lilly: Well, I can't give it to you! Ellen: You deserve it too, Lilly, to just be happy? <Lilly walks away>

I think this is what really got to Lilly above all else. Deep down, she has to know that she's not actually happy, but I don't think she realized that others could pick up on it. She was probably in denial, but having someone else point it out leaves little room for denial. She knew that she didn't want her mother's idea of happiness, but she doesn't want to keep living in her world where it doesn't matter, either. Like you said Irishkale, it's a complicated relationship with plenty of intricate layers. It's beautifully complicated.

"beautifully complicated" <---- I agree 1000%! I hope the writers will keep Ellen in the show and in future scripts. There's so many possibilities there for Ellen to get under Lilly's skin -- "So when am I going to get some grandchildren?" -- that I can't see them blowing such a great opportunity!

I hope so too irishkale. I would love to see Meredith Baxter return from time to time and give Lilly some grief. There's a lot there that hasn't been said and I'd love to see those conversations!
