I know this question has come up many times on this board. I won a copy of the script from the Pilot off of eBay, and received it the other day. Anyway I read through it, and it seemed to shed more light on the answer. In the directions for the actors, it made it quite clear that Lilly made up her story to Evelyn Shelby (about knowing the difference between a sports injury and a beating b/c of an ex-husband). I got the impression from the directions that Lilly has never been married. Later in the episode, Mrs. Shelby references their earlier conversation where Lilly claimed to have been married, and (her former partner) Las seems caught off guard. It's clear here as well that he understands how you have to lie to relate to witnesses and suspects in order to ascertain the info you need to solve the case. I can't post any direct quotes on here (it's clearly stated on the script), but I wanted to let you guys know that it came across like Lilly lied about having been married. So now, I wonder what happened to the motorcycle man? Just when you think you've solved one mystery about Lilly, you realize she has tons more.

Oh so you finally got the script?
Well, I've thought at times Lilly was just playing games with suspects to get information. Isn't that what they do in their profession? But other times I've thought some things go to Lilly. So maybe it's a bit of both?
Well we do know that she has a mother and a sister for sure even though we haven't seen her mom yet but an indication that Lilly had to got to the drug store for her prescription cause her sister wasn't around.
Thanks for the tidbits. Gee, you can't talk about a script? That's a real shame.

I know what you mean Naj. I guess it's just part of the profession and coning suspects and witnesses into giving you what you need. It works so well for Lilly b/c she's so mysterious to begin with anyway.
I can talk about the script (I assume anyway), but I just can't quote it b/c it says something on the front of it about being property of Warner Bros. Television and no part of it may be reproduced, performed, quoted, etc. I don't want to get in trouble, so I don't want to quote the actual passages that I was talking about in the earlier post.
Interestingly enough, the script contains the character of Deep, whom I assume was eventually cut from the final draft. Good idea b/c he seemed annoying (from the 1 or 2 scenes he was in). The show works much better without him IMO. Another interesting thing in the script was the language. I haven't seen the pilot since it originally aired, but I assume it was less crass than this version of the script. Lilly had much more of a potty mouth, but I remember reading somewhere that the show was told to tone her down b/c it was too much for primetime television. Nothing major, but more than what we get now.

Interestingly enough, the script contains the character of Deep, whom I assume was eventually cut from the final draft. Good idea b/c he seemed annoying (from the 1 or 2 scenes he was in). The show works much better without him IMO. From what I've heard there was an unaired pilot that did feature the character of Walter Deep, played by character actor, Gregg Henry. This unaired pilot was listed on tvtome for many months but they took it off in late spring "04. I think it would be kind of cool to see this pilot now to catch the differences between it and the pilot that aired. So my guess TVFan is the script you received was the unaired pilot script that was filmed for pilot season. My guess is that when the show was picked up by CBS, they wanted to make some changes and that's when they got rid of the Deep character. Now another thing I head about the unaired pilot was that the character of Jeffries was played by another actor. I have found no confirmation on that so I'm going to ask InsideR about it and also about the unaired pilot in general to see what she can tell us.

InsideR just gave us some info on the unaired pilot over in her thread, "A Few Bits of Interest" in the news section. BTW TVFan, it is so cool that you have a copy of the script and for the pilot of all episodes. Is it an autographed one?

It is indeed signed (by Kathryn), but the saga of getting the script was completely ridiculous. It's the one I posted about in the Off-Topic area ("Am I Being Taken"). I wanted it to see the format so I could write some scripts correctly.
I'll have to go check out InsideR's post. Thanks for asking her Ryebeach.
