LOGIES institution Bert Newton will not present the Gold Logie this year.
The Herald Sun has learned that Newton, who has presented the Gold Logie three out of the past four years, has filmed a video message and is not expected to be at the ceremony tomorrow night.
He finishes the Brisbane season of The Producers tonight.
Insiders gave the Herald Sun a shortlist of five other names, one of whom will present the gold: Susan Sarandon, Sigrid Thornton, Bud Tingwell, Sam Neill, or Nicolas Cage.
Two years ago Newton attracted criticism after seeking a substantial package to present the Gold Logie. He returned last year with a speech that was a highlight of the ceremony.
Both Sarandon and Cage, who are in Australia filming movies, would be the obvious choices to present the Gold Logie.
Thornton would be a striking choice - she has shaved her head for her part in the Channel 9 telemovie Little Oberon.
INTERNATIONAL guest Kathryn Morris, from Channel 9's Cold Case, arrived yesterday.
She was a guest at radio station FOX FM's pre-Logies barbecue and jokingly predicted Rove McManus would win the Gold.
"Rove McManus sounds very sexy," she said. "That's the kind of name they would make up in Hollywood and give to you," she told hosts Judith Lucy and Peter Helliar.
